Many years ago, after the end of a bloody world war, mankind took shelter in six city-states that were peaceful and perfect... at least on the surface. However, Shion—an elite resident of the city-state No. 6—gained a new perspective on the world he lives in, thanks to a chance encounter with a mysterious boy, Nezumi. Nezumi turned out to be just one of many who lived in the desolate wasteland beyond the walls of the supposed utopia. But despite knowing that the other boy was a fugitive, Shion decided to take him in for the night and protect him, which resulted in drastic consequences: because of his actions, Shion and his mother lost their status as elites and were relocated elsewhere, and the darker side of the city began to make itself known.

Now, a long time after their life-altering first meeting, Shion and Nezumi are finally brought together once again—the former elite and the boy on the run are about to embark on an adventure that will, in time, reveal the shattering secrets of No. 6.

This is by far one of the most beautifully made anime I've ever laid my eyes on!

The plot was fascinating and unique, and I can't stop thinking about the characters! Their personalities really left a mark! ^^

And the fact that the feelings between the main characters were shown in a more realistic way and not shoved in your face, made it a much more pleasant watch and made me root for them^^

When I think about it, I can't say I've come across another anime with the same premise and I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see a special episode, though I'm pretty sure it won't ... happen since it's ages since this anime aired..

This is absolutely an anime I would recommend to others who prefer to watch animes that are not as ‘plain’ as others may be ^^

Mixed Feelings

This is a case where reading the manga before watching the anime ruined the show for me. While they are very similar, in that they hit most of the same plot points. The art style and pacing changes that the anime made caused me to not enjoy it.

The manga artwork was clean and very pretty, with a lot of details that gave it a unique feel. The anime's art style on the other hand oversimplifies a lot of the designs and lacks the unique charm the original had.

I also felt that the manga did a better job of creating an atmospheric mood. ... The tone shifts between happy moments and action/horror was a highlight of the manga but was lost for me in the anime.

In summary, if you have not read the manga you might enjoy this anime quite a bit since the story is still good and the characters are more or less depicted accurately. The unique combination of drama, romance, sci-fi, and dystopian horror is a lot of fun to experience.
I would struggle to really recommend the anime to anyone who's already read the manga and loved it. But I can easily recommend the anime to anyone who hasn't yet read the story or even to someone who read the manga and only thought it was okay, since some of the changes that the anime makes may actually appeal to you more.

Who is the audience for this?
The BL is barely 2 goodbye pecks on the lips, and it's barely any romance overall with the leads being at best acquaintances who have almost no character consistency, wildly oscillating between: annoyance, abuser and enabler, friend, etc. on a dime, yet most of these characters who were actively going to slit others' throats will randomly become willing to give their lives to help them.
All the characters are terrible, lacking in almost any personality beyond grumbling aside from the innocent goodboy non-character MC who may as well have been a golden retriever dog, at least then the timewasting filler dialogue ... would've been avoided.
There's barely any sci-fi elements beyond random autonomous robot plot-contrivances used solely for chores and running messages rather than enforcing the 1984 surveillance government's control, and whatever sci-fi they attempt goes nowhere and instead becomes a nonsense plotline about some random fantasy nature deity who deus-ex-machinas the whole show in the end.
There's little action.
There's very little plot, outside the beginning and end the characters mostly just wander around doing filler like washing dogs, arguing about nothing, pulling up random plot threads that'll go nowhere... The actions of the cast didn't really have any relevance to the plot, the ending would've happened with or without them.

This show goes through so many of the same overall story beats as Fractale, except that anime did better in every way (though that is a low bar).
