Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko!

Childhood friends Tomo Aizawa and Junichirou "Jun" Kubota do everything together, whether it be training or just enjoying a fun day out. Anyone would think that these two are best friends for life. The only issue is that the tomboyish Tomo is in love with Jun, but he regards her like a brother.

At the start of their first year of high school, Tomo confesses her feelings to Jun. However, her rough mannerisms and lack of hesitance to throw a punch do nothing to sway Jun's heart. Realizing that he will remain indifferent to her affections unless she does something about it, Tomo must find a way to knock some sense into Jun and open his eyes to what is right in front of him.

A very fun series that explores traditional masculine and feminine qualities when it comes to relationships. What really sells this show is all the likable characters from our two main leads, but also most of the side characters. Everyone just has so much personality, and the show does a solid job of focusing on the characters and the high school setting is a lesser note which is nice in romance anime that sometimes puts an over emphasis on the setting. This shows really plays into that the main duo are childhood friends but now as early high school students they are starting to discover more ... about themselves and what type of relationships they want.

The comedy is very solid and the dichotomy between Toni’s rough nature and her sensitive cute side is very fun to flip back and forth. The voice acting is superb as each character really comes to life. The animation is above quality. I only didn’t rate is higher out of personal preference, but this is for sure one of the better high school romance animes.

Mixed Feelings

Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko, Tomo is a Girl!, is nothing really special.

The overall story is pretty generic and common. I’d consider the romance to be a slow burn, some people like that and some don’t. What I will commend this anime for, is clearly depicting characters realising their feelings. Watching this anime will allow you to truly witness what it means to go from best friends to lovers.

This also features two great side characters, with their own stories and feelings that are actually a lot deeper than you would think.

The voice actors did a very good job in this anime too.

Although this review ... list labeled as “mixed feelings”, it leans more towards “recommended”.

Overall, yes, the story is basic and it is a slow burn which might throw some of you off. However, I still think this anime would be worth giving a shot because there is more to an anime besides the overarching plot. Take your time, watching this anime and maybe you’ll like it more than you thought you would’ve.

In general, is a forgettable anime. Typical romantic comedy without any difference from other regular shows of the same genre, the only difference with them is the plot of "a really strong tomboy as main char" and all the jokes will be around that idea. The story is left with an open end, it won't get a second season and nobody will care about that.

This anime passes without trouble or fanfare, not being good or bad, simply mediocre. It's like popcorn without salt, you can eat it but it won't taste at all.

Regular art and animation, regular characters, regular plots. If you enjoy most of ... the animes from this genre you probably will enjoy it, maybe you will even love it. If you where looking for something better than the average this won't be your show.
