Boku no Tsuma wa Kanjou ga Nai addpermalink

Romance between human and human-like robots, and the struggles that come along with that kind of relationship are portrayed in both shows. Although I think Bokutsuma may be simpler, I find myself reminded very much of Chobits while watching it.

In both stories, lonely guys happen to meet and live with girls who aren't exactly human and under weird circumstances. As many comic and/or dramatic situations take place, they get closer. As a matter of fact, one can say that Chobits is like a modern version of Video Girl Ai.

Video Girl Ai can be a bit rough at first; the art style is certainly a bit older than what you're looking at in Chobits, and there is definitely a generation gap involved, but if you can get past that, you'll find that it really is quite good. Keep in mind that Ai is a very, very different character than Chii is though, having a bit more in common with Mahoromatics Mahoro than our persocom friend, so it may be a good idea to check that out before this.

In terms of the story, it's...roughly similar. Ai is a special video girl who's created purpose is to comfort men with emotional wounds. However, thanks to Yohta's broken VCR (again, generation gap), she comes out with a personality that's not exactly the way it was meant to be.

What this translates into is her being a bit of a snob...at first. There is definitely no innocence involved here, nor is there a lack of common sense, at least on Ai's part. Much of that is actually placed in the male lead this time, so there is a bit of an adjustment to make. That said, you truly feel sorry for him as his feelings through the show are generally confused and often misplaced.

It's when he starts to actually realize that that Ai suddenly starts becoming a much more likeable character since that's also when she starts to realize her own feelings for him.

In general though, the show is a little hard to get used to, and throughout the show Ai never really feels like Chii, and it even takes a while for her to start bearing her similarities to Mahoro. If you can stick with it through the first half of the six episodes, you'll find the final half to be more along the lines of what you're looking for though.  read more

Both series felt simillar, on a lot of occasions - the subdued, soft-coloured palette of colours that was being used, the show's themes and the tonal shifts from light comedy to somber melancholia, as well as the fact that both series deals with love, even if artificial, and how we can aceept and grow with it as people. As well as that, the people's obsession with technology and their desire to connect through something fictional, even if for a bit.

It's criminal that this recommendation isn't farther up the list. Although Ai is a few years older, both are classic cel-drawn anime with down-on-your-luck protagonists and tech-related sci-fi romantic interests. Most importantly, the vibe is exactly the same, both have similar story arcs and top-notch soundtracks and legendary voice actors. Thankfully, the one difference is refreshing: the female leads have quite different temperaments...

Both are stories about a guy who lives with a female-looking (very good looking, I must say) robot, and... both are ecchi. xD

Mahoromatic's love story is a tad bit different than Chobits, but in general, there are many similarities between the two shows. It's worth noting that one of the driving elements of this series is that Mahoro, the main female character, is actually going to die...in 390 days from the first day you're introduced to her. There's actually a countdown showing how much time she has left at the end of every episode, and it's a very powerful tool in intensifying your desire to see the main characters realize their feelings for each other.

There are some very obvious differences between Chobits and Mahoromatic, and they're apparent just by looking at the cover art. Mahoro is not in the same class as Chii in the least. First off, she's a bit more attractive (opinion of course) as she is designed to look like a 19 year old girl as opposed to Chii who looks 13. Mahoro is also nowhere near as innocent as Chii; she's got plenty of real life experience, and has seen, and taken part in the horrors of war as the worlds most powerful combat android.

That said, being she has very limited time left to live, she's given the opportunity to live life as a normal person, during which time she decides to become a maid. Carrying over her unwavering loyalty to duty from her career as a combat android into her new job as a maid, she still manages to run into predicaments similar to those you see in Chobits, albeit without the same level of innocence and lack of common sense as Chii. 

Suguru, the male lead in this series, is actually quite similar to Hideki in his awkwardness and appreciation for his companion. If you liked Hideki, I can promise you'll find a lot to like in Suguru...though he does have a bit more smarts and common sense than the former. The only thing I found odd was adoration the opposite sex has for him throughout the series. It seems that almost every female in the show has their eye on him, while he isn't really portrayed as anything more than your average guy in any regard.

I should mention that there's something of a difference between the first season of this show and the second. While it's not as drastic as, say, Gunslinger Girl, it is there. Animation and art is left largely intact, though the second season is far more vibrant and colorful; it overall looks better to me. The story is left largely the same, however the focus shifts from romance with comedy to comedy with romance. It still balances the two well, and maintains its charm, but there is a transition period. Still, once you get used to it, there are some truly laugh-out-loud funny parts, and one episode where I actually had to pause it I was laughing so hard. 

In the end, I think you'll find the show to be just as charming and entertaining as Chobits, and Mahoro to be just as endearing as Chii. read more

In Chobits, the main male character finds a persocom that has been thrown away.  Similarly in Kowarekake no Orgel, there is a male character who finds an android that looks like a human. The persocom and the android are child-like so the male characters watch over them with care.

Has an overall good feel, though does delve into dark and misterious pasts and scenes to give a deeper story that makes you wonder if theres more than meets the eye.

They're both harem with incredibly beautiful girls.  Both guys are loserish guys who get a hold of their love interests in interesting ways.  Ah! My Goddess has less of a plot than Chobits but both are great fun.

There are a lot of differences between these two anime, the time, the feel, etc. but the characters relationships are similar in the romantic sense. Its a completely different story entirely, but if you liked the romantic comedy in Spice and Wolf, then Chobits is something you may want to consider watching.

Both are early 2000s Romantic Sci-fi anime with a little Ecchi thrown in. The main male protagonists are 4 years apart in age (Iwata is 15, Hideki is 18 - 19). The females are also 4 years apart (Rizel is 12, Chi is 16) 

Differences

Chobits is considerably more dramatic than Rizelmine
Rizelmine is a Lolicon series 
Rizel is a human with machine features, Chi is a complete machine capable of human emotions.

Both animes have the same heartwarming feeling when it comes to representing the lovely genre that is "slice of life" in a way that both just make you so happy that you might start cry.
Both animes explore and represent what it is to "take care" of someone younger with an innocent and simple mind, where even if the older protagonist is the one that should "educate" the younger protagonist, it is the older that sometimes learns or rediscovers the joys of life through the younger's perspective of the world.
In both animes, there is a male protagonist that takes care of the female.
Both of them represent the lovely and sweet bond that can be created when you put your heart into protecting someone that you love.
Both female protagonists are "young" physicaly and mentaly and have yet to discover a lot about the world and they both do it alongside the male character.

For me, both animes made me feel purely happy and they both made me sad when I approached the end because I knew, once I saw the last episode, I would never have such a beautiful experience such as the ones I had when I watch both of these animes.

And, of course, they are both beautiful anime. read more

Both MCs are "upgraded" versions of the prevailing humanoid AIs. While their genres are very different, they both explore the inner aspects of AI and asks thought-provoking questions.

Setting-wise, one can argue that Vivy is what Chobits would be like if it was made in the 2020s.

Both anime have a very simular premise (expect that Chobits also deals with the androit theme) and process in the same way (also Maison Ikkoku has more episodes and follows the charaters for a longer period in time):

The male main characters are both quite normal, rather simple guys.
They both failed the high school enterance exams first.
They move in an one way or another mysterious boarding house. 
They have to deal with problems in their new independent city live.
While other things happen their love interests process slowly.

Hideki is very similar Sato (MC from NHK!)
and you could also probably relate Chii to Misaki from NHK

These Anime both have their similarities and differences but I'm absolutely positive that if you like Chobits you will enjoy Welcome to the NHK! just as well.

Both main characters are technologically retarded / slightly perverted / and have a few other social problems of their own.

Akikan! is about a boy who bought a can of melon soda from a vending machine.... the can suddenly transforms into a girl, a so called 'Akikan'. It is less ecchi than chobits and a bit more childish but it is about a boy surrounded by girls like chobits.

The plots of both these anime originate from the same manga-ka, and deal with the relationships that can develope between humans and machines. They are both very sweet and very emotional with a little bit of humour thrown in. Chobits is a bit more mature, however, and has a darker tone to the plot at times.

Both series have a male character who "finds" the female character. The girls cannot speak much initially (aside from names) or have much knowledge, but they learn more and more as time goes on. They both also have romance in them.
