First of all let me say. Togame's new look is really cute. Which may be a comparatively unimportant takeaway from this episode. But I'm a fan. A lot happened here holy crap. If the last episode hadn't just outright spoiled it. I would not have expected Nanami's story to play out like that. It was still kind of surprising. I personally don't think Nanami really wanted to die. I think her criticism of Togame's usage of Shichika betrayed that she has her own values and expectations. That beneath the duty and years of isolation. She's her own person who didn't need to end up this way.
Nanami is a fairly confounding character though. And while it was what she wanted. I find myself slightly sad at her death. I guess maybe it's the "Unforgiven" end of an era vibe this series has been giving off since Episode 1. Where Shichika is the last Kyotoryou and quite possibly will be the end of the line. The last piece of his past being severed is sort of heavy. Even though he's grown tremendously since the beginning.
On a final note really dug the video game scenes. Like Nanami's assault and Togame and Shichika's arrival. Some have speculated they opted to animate them that way for money issues. But I think it's worth noting both scenes are flashbacks. And neither looks all that terrible especially the Nanami bullet hell. Oh yeah and that song that played right before the credits was fire.
With how interesting Nanami's character is, I definitely thought that she could be the final boss in this series in which Shichika need to face also wishing that preview is a troll with the blatant spoiling but oh well just like what other people said even though with the way she had to massacre all those innocent people just to reach this point which is completely unreasonable, in a way good to see her finally attain the peace she wanted. Press F for Nanami for being a great character.
Also am I the only one that actually like Togame's new hair I mean I definitely prefer her long hair but I mean short hair is still just fine and the hair cutting scene is so badass. Also the art style change is definitely not as bad as what other people are trying to say as it doesn't interfere with my enjoyment. I also chuckle a bit with the video game ref which is kind of unexpected, never change show.
I liked the instances where they pretty much handled the flashback like a video game. Togame's multiple embarrassing kabuki poses were real fun watching too.
It's tragic to see a family that's that okay with killing each other because they see themselves as mere swords. Nanami could've lived but she was suffering the whole time because of her unstable battle prowess. At least she managed to teach Shichika a valuable piece of advice before getting put down.
Seeing Togame wrap her hair around Shichika was very amusing but she really rocks that haircut. She looks fiercer and more calculated like how a military adviser would look for some reason. The way she got that haircut could've left the person head beside heels real quick though...
An all around great episode and one I wasn't expecting to happen this early, cuz tbh I thought this would be the finale but I guess not lol

Pretty much the most memorable episode of the series, Nanami will be missed along with Togame's hair. Despite being a sadist she is still a great sister, the fight was awesome too, full of combos. Nothing to say much but, I really love how Nanami fights.
Really solid episode even if it was the same time very depressing. Nanami became a cruel murderer just so that she would fight her brother and maybe had a chance to die.
The style where they animated some scenes like a video game was surprising but nothenless cool.
In the first fight Nanami showed that normally nobody would ever beat her. The sharingan would be jeleaous about her eyes. But just thinking about it that she made herself weaker by using the abilities of her opponents as well as when she put Akuto Bita in her chest is crazy. It was just to much power for her little weak body to handle.
The whole story around her and the Yasuri family is darker as I had thought. Even if it were just memories, the things her dad and mom said in the past were so cruel. I'm sure this was also a reason why she just wanted to die.
The strategy for the last fight was perfect by Togame. Not only was she able to tell Shichika his weaknes, she also used the element of surprise and got Nanami off guard. I don't even want to imagine how Shichika must have felt when he gave Nanami the final blow. :(
Oh and I personally love Togames new hairstyle. What a wholesome moment at the end between Shichika and Togame. Even with the fact that Shichika lost his sister his still has Togame <3
Togame lost her hair and now has short hair. The reminds me of Senjougahara, Hitagi in Bakemonogatari when she started out with long hair and it got cut short later on. This show has several things that remind me of that series but since I liked that series, this one is just fine. A very good episode with tons of back story. Looks like the next episode continues with more backstory to flesh out the characters.
Outstanding episode on every level. Such a shame for family to have to kill each other though.

The death of Nanami devastated me. It brought back the pain of Clannad. She shares a seiyuu with Nagisa, Nakahara Mai and sounds to similar. It was 1/2 an hour before I could function again.
This was a chore to sit through. The massacre scene at the beginning definitely made me check out. Everything after that felt forced, and I just rolled my eyes at the show making her death all sad. Like, come on girl, just run a blade through your own throat if you're so desperate to end it.

Strongly agree, kinda baffles me that most people enjoyed this episode. I'm just glad it's over, I have zero sympathy for Nanami.
Dang... so after all that, we're just gonna go back to collecting swords huh? What event bigger than having to fight your own sister could they have to end it all with?
On a side note I like how the time passed in the anime seems to align quite perfectly with the time passed in real life when this was airing, which would be 6 or 7 months.
#1: I can't believe this anime is so dang underrated...
#2: Just gonna put my ranking for this episode from the get-go. 7>>>4>3=1>6>5>2
On to the analysis. First, I feel like how this episode was animated worked to its advantage. I've seen comments here saying the budget seemed much lower than the previous episodes. I can see how so; many of the character movements weren't as fluid as in the last six episodes, and the colors seemed less vibrant compared to the ambiance from the previous episodes. I feel like it worked for this episode since the other six show Shichika & Togame attempting to obtain swords and their silly antics that happen throughout; this episode really wanted to make it seem a lot more intense. I've noticed that the lines seem thicker, and the characters don't have too many details. The characters already had simple designs, to begin with, but in the previous episodes, you still had some shadows and lighting to make the characters blend with the environment, and the colors were a lot more vibrant. This episode, except for the short sequence when Shichika & Togame meet Emonzaemon, makes the characters seem more like cutouts. There are no shadows on their body, the colors are dim, and the lighting isn't there for most of the episode. (The exception, lighting-wise, is during the fight within the presence of the Buddha of swords.) This episode didn't want to give the aesthetic of a children's storybook adventure; it wanted to make it seem as if watching traditional Japanese art trying to portray an upcoming tragedy. You can quickly notice that in the first two minutes of the episode when you have the footage look like 'Sumi-e' art. The backgrounds, for the most part, are what they usually are, with a watercolor aesthetic, making it seem like ukiyo-e art. The difference, once again, is how the characters are shown throughout; previous episodes make it seem like they were in the environment, but here, they seem more like cutouts, giving it a much more traditional artistic sense.
This image shows the difference on how the style looks from the previous episodes (top) vs how it looks here (bottom):
Now then... Nanami... Bro, she is such a tragically written character! Scratch that: the entire Yasuri family is really tragic! It was revealed in previous episodes that Shichika killed off his father, but it's shown here that his father killed off his wife! Like, huh????? Why are they all killing each other??????? But I'll bring that up during this discussion on Nanami. One thing I've realized with the characters' design is how each represents a season. Shichika = Fall, Togame = Winter, Nanami = Spring, and we don't know much about her, but I'm assuming Hitei = Summer. Each season has some symbolism within them, but in the case of Nanami, it can be seen symbolically and ironically. Spring is shown as 'hope for renewal, birth/rebirth, new love/romance, and starting anew. It's a season that reminds us that change is possible and that there's always room for growth.' In the ironic sense for Nanami, she cannot change or start anew; she wants to be killed off and believes there isn't any hope for renewal. Symbolically, however, Nanami may seem like a potent flower who consumes abilities, making herself stronger, just like a flower needing nourishment to grow. In her twisted way, she sees people to be nothing more than 'weed,' which is why it is considered to be her job to uproot that 'weed.'
Anyways, Nanami destroys a village to obtain a sword that can strengthen her body. As mentioned about the Yasuri family, killing each other seems more of a regular thing; therefore, the way Nanami grew, she believes killing others is expected. That said, we can see how she is trying to be a bit human by figuring out what is considered good or bad; however, she also wants to be killed humanely, hence wanting to face off against Shichika.
She then arrives at a temple in which she takes over. Shichika & Togame arrive at the temple to fight for the sword. Shichika fails during their first bout, causing Nanami's plan to not go as she wanted since Shichika has been becoming more aware as a human being rather than a weapon. Shichika now knows the importance of human life and is able to make his own decisions when he wants to, rather than just listening to what someone tells him to do. Seeing how Shichika is becoming more humane, Nanami makes her see him as someone who used to be a sharp sword but is now becoming rusty. She mainly sees Togame as the reason for causing such a change in him, seeing how she has been teaching Shichika what is considered correct and wrong.
Speaking of Togame, we can see how she slowly getting much closer to Shichika. In the scene when she sees him in his room feeling depressed, Togame tells him how he is the only one for her now. Shichika was worried about how Togame would have picked Nanami to accompany her on the journey if he mentioned her strength, mainly because he had fallen for her. Togame, however, tries to uplift him. She tells him that it doesn't matter anymore since she already picked him about half a year ago and doesn't regret the decision now. She also mentions how she makes many mistakes, but in the end, she wins after many failures. After encouraging him but not forcing him to fight, Shichika agrees to a rematch, and she helps him with what to do and makes a scheme to win the fight quickly. I feel like Togame has become a lot more caring of Shichika as well, where she thinks about obtaining the sword back and sees Shichika as a human being.
Anyway, I really loved how the environment of the fight was done. Standing before a great Buddha of swords with many candles close to it. As Shichik and Nanami fight, he manages to take away the sword she possesses. Still, it is then revealed how she tried to control her strength with such a phony sword, making it decrease her strength by restoring her life force. She has been using her sight training to become a little weaker by utilizing the strength of others. It is revealed that she still wanted to live a little longer but figured how meaningless that was. Togame wanted to stop the fight since it was no longer necessary. For the sake of them both, she didn't want to see the two trying to kill each other. Shichika doesn't even want to kill her, but Nanami triggers Shichika by cutting off Togame's long hair and threatens to aim for her head next time. This makes Shichika furious for the hair to be gone, and because if she were to die, Shichika would have broken such a promise. Mentioning earlier how Nanami represents Spring, she once again brings up a phrase in relation to flowers; that being...
This shows that she won't deal with Shichika lightly and will destroy him if she needs to, but Shichika would have her torn to pieces by that point...
And then....... well.....
Ok... I will compare this moment to another from another anime (hint: ONE PIECE, around its episodes around the 400s), so if you don't want to be spoiled by that one, I suggest not reading it. If you don't really care, go for it, I guess...

So, One Piece... I've been getting myself to that anime as well and reached Marineford. If there's something similar to the two anime, within my experience, it is that I reached a similar part of their story simultaneously, and I got myself spoiled in such moments concerning a sibling. For One Piece, I already knew about Ace's death. The moment has Ace protect Luffy from a Marine officer who tries to kill him, but ends up killed himself. The moment isn't sad because he got killed; it's unfortunate because it shows the character's regret and the protagonist's reaction. Ace is being held by the hands of Luffy, and he is shown how he realizes he doesn't have regrets in his life except that he won't see his brother achieve his dream. He then reflects on the times when he questioned whether he deserved to be born. Ace eventually realized how he grew with a great life and how there has always been people who loved him: the other crew members, Whitebeard, who he sees as his father, and Luffy. He was able to pass away knowing he was able to live a meaningful life after all. This moment causes Luffy to break down, especially considering that he and many others went on their way to save him from execution. Still, in the end, they failed, and he lost someone very close to him. This moment puts Luffy at his lowest point, and he can't get over the moment for a while. Even though I was spoiled, the scene still got me, but this moment also made me think of myself as a brother to my siblings. As the oldest, I try to get along with them, even though sometimes they can be annoying. Still, this moment makes me believe that I can be an even better brother, not just by how close I am with them but by encouraging them for their goals in life and how amazing it would be to see them achieve them. I was in tears at this moment. It was executed quite emotionally and got me thinking about my brothers and how I want them to grow up to become great people.
The reason I brought this up is because while Ace's death got me in tears, Nanami's death TORE ME TO PIECES!!!!! Again, it's not because of how Nanami dies, but because of how Shichika had to go through the process during the fight. The two really had to face off each other after Nanami cuts Togames long hair, triggering Shichika to forcefully attempt to kill Nanami, but during the sequence, you can see Shichika not wanting to pull it off. The man was in tears while trying to bring his blows to Nanami, and he could say nothing else but 'Nee-chan.' The way the VA was able to deliver such a line several times was so tragic that it really got me badly. This was the moment where I felt Shichika as a character as well since he has been developing more humaneness and has more feelings that killing his own sister is obviously painful. The way this anime has been developing him, the way we slowly know more about the Yasuri family, and the way Nanami herself wanted this were all built up to make this moment really effective.
Like, man... I really felt for Shichika in this scene. As Togame mentioned in the previous episode, Shichika has also recently been impressing me. The moment Shichika kills Nanami, we see how she tries to deliver her final line (hence why it was brought up in EP 2) but fails to give it... which also sadly shows how even though she wanted to finish things off in a regular way, she still fumbles her words even during death. And then, Shichika holds onto her sister's body, like, dang... I can't... Compared to Ace, while he still had regrets, he realized he lived a meaningful life and was grateful to have been born. Nanami, however, showed no regrets and was thankful for finally dying since she felt like living was way too painful.
Eventually, we see the two outside waiting for a ship, and that 'Lay Back' song plays in the background again... dang it, stop playing that song everytime something sad happens!!! Anyways, Shichika discusses how Nanami wanted to be killed off like a normal person, but he really didn't want to kill her. You can really sense the regretful tone he gives out when saying such a line. It is also revealed that Shichika loved his father the same Nanami did to him, which gives you a sense of how there must have been a reason for Shichika to kill off his father, but even so, he now regrets doing so. On the ship, they discuss how they don't have any family anymore, meaning that both Shichika and Togame are the last within their family bloodlines, which is pretty sad to think about. However, at least they still have each other.....
Then the ED comes up... oh my hecking... the song broke me even more... especially if you were to check the entire song's lyrics... Considering that the song was sung by Nanami's VA, I found the song to be her departing lullaby to Shichika, telling him how she finally got what she wanted and how Shichika himself should avoid the pain of such reality. Like, dang it, man... you can't do this to me...
Then you show a post-credits scene of Shichika and Nanami as kids sitting beside a tree, with Nanami having some watermelon and Shichika sleeping, saying the word 'nee-chan' softly, showing how much he loves her.......
....I'm gonna cry myself to sleep now...
