Heard many great things about this series so I'm finally giving it a start and wow!! 1st episode is and I'm already hooked to this series.
Britannia empire has already take over the entire American continent and now this series start with japan being colonise by them and getting a new name called area eleven.
Lelouch the main character is japanese but he got non japanese name and what's more is that even being an "eleven", you can still be a britannian by pledging your loyalty to britannia and living a pretty great life.
Despite being a high school student, the mc is really genius. his sheer confidence in chess by starting with the king and winning against aristocrat that fast tells me that he's going to be a game changer lvl of mc. That red hair girl was cute, so is the green hair girl.
Judging by the mind control super power that the MC inherited from the green hair girl, it's understandable why the britannian royal Prince going all out of killing innocent civilian, After all she's definitely some kind of secret supernatural weapon or a test subject. And now the mc got his hand on it, things bout to be wild.
The animation is quite clean for a old anime and the mech action also looks good. The opening song is a certified banger, I don't think I'm gonna skip it for a while.
This show brings nationalism that I never know I have. And I am maybe the least nationalist of my country.
How the show portrayed Japanese as victim of wars, insensitive to any suffering they brought with them during WW2. I know this is a Japanese show created for Japanese people, but still that stink so badly. I will still watch it only to see how far they will go with this.

This anime is about Japan's status as an American vassal state. It's intentionally set in Japan for a reason. The Britannian term is an aesthetic for what the Americans have done to Japan especially after 1992. After Japan's economic collapse, it no longer has a chance to be the number one country like it was in the 80s and now America controls it financially and politically.
To make it simpler one side of the characters represents the revival of Japan's standing army and the other side represents the maintenance of the status quo and that Japan should not ever have an army and should remain America's glorified naval carrier against the Chinese.
Suzaku is set up to be the contemporary Japanese position.
Not every series about occupation is about the western concept of "decolonisation" whereby modern France is critiqued for being "neocolonialist" but both China and America are given a pass to do what they see fit.
I think that theme of beinf a "superpower" nation will be explored.
Considering that this series was written during the interim period of heavy anti JSDF sentiment during and after the collapse of the USSR, as well as the renewed interest in Japan developing it's army to participate in the global war on terror (before the backlash of involvement culminated in renewed anti JSDF sentiment) it's not a ww2 form of nationalism but a simple desire to exist on the world stage without being potentially subjugated by the Chinese, North Koreans, or currently subjugated by America. It is also not about a niche form of anti colonial rhetoric because at the end of the day this is a Japanese series written in the mid 2000s so it wouldn't make sense for an American centric post occupy wallstreet brand of politics.
