That would be "Space Battleship Yamato". The Argo reference is only from the English Dub version and ancient history. In America we couldn't call a ship we sank by its real name.
For some reason I never suspected that the battleship would actually literally be the Yamato. I guess I thought that it was just going to be named after the Yamato. This is actually way cool, flying through space on a WWII battleship!
Even if the budget was low for this anime compared to today's standards, they've had an impressive range of music used. It reminds me of some American series like Star Trek and Outer Limits. Some classical instruments, marches, funk, that 70s style brass. I think in one space scene I even heard a quiet theremin. I couldn't help but wonder how some of the sound effects were made as they didn't have such a vast library of sounds to use as today.
Gratuitous fan service is nothing new I see. Not only did perv-bot randomly flip Mori’s skirt, later he manages to cop a feel when they are under bombardment! The more things change, the more they stay the same huh?
“English doesn’t borrow from other languages. English follows other languages down dark alleys, knocks them over the head and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.”
Very impressive episode, I really love where this is going and didn't expect that brief history of the Yamato which was a totally great addition as well! Let's see what's next.
I wasn't surprised by the Yamato's recycling but by the lesson about it. Wasn't the Yamato supposed to be some gllory of the past? (especially in the 70s who were not so far away from the 40s)
Like someone highlighted above, the soundtrack is interessting. (was expecting less from this decade, or at least more typical sounds of this time)
The only "bad" point yet is the inclusion of the robot forced into some comic relief mascot. (shouldn't complain about it when we, french, had Nono in Ulysses)
Recently I watched another anime in which they reused battleship Yamato. It seems this theme is nothing new and it pops up once in a while. I don't think I will ever understand it fully as it seems to be a very Japanese thing.
The last time I've seen a perverted robot was in Robot on the Road, I think :-)
The Yamato was a pretty big ship here on Earth, but as a space ship, it might be a bit small. I guess it's more of a Noah's arc thing, that's pretty cool. Hope it doesn't meet the same fate though.
