Aniplex opened an official website for the Japanese dub of Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) on Saturday, revealing a teaser promo and key visual (pictured).

The first two seasons of the donghua will air in Japan under the title Madou Soshi with subtitles on WOWOW beginning September 9 and November 4, respectively. The Japanese dub—produced by Aniplex and Sony Music Solutions—will premiere on WOWOW and Tokyo MX in January 2021. Whether or not the January dub broadcast will include the second season has not been specified.

Synopsis
Xian: the state of immortality that all cultivators strive to achieve. However, there is a dark energy that lies underneath—the forbidden Mo Dao, or demonic path. Through an unfortunate series of tragedies, this is the path that cultivator Wei Wuxian experiments with during his teachings. His rise in power is accompanied by chaos and destruction, but his reign of terror comes to an abrupt end when the cultivation clans overpower him and he is killed by his closest ally.

Thirteen years later, Wei Wuxian is reincarnated in the body of a lunatic and reunited with Lan Wangji, a former classmate of his. This marks the beginning of a supernatural mystery that plagues the clans and threatens to disrupt their everyday life.

Mo Dao Zu Shi follows these two men on their mission to unravel the mysteries of the spiritual world. Fighting demons, ghosts, and even other cultivators, the two end up forming a bond that neither of them had ever expected. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Produced by B.Cmay Pictures and Tencent Penguin Pictures, Mo Dao Zu Shi adapts Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's Chinese web novel of the same name, which was serialized from 2015 to 2016. The 15-episode first season streamed on Tencent Video from July to October 2018, followed by an eight-episode second season from August 3 to August 31 last year. A third season is scheduled for 2021, and a chibi spin-off featuring 30 five-minute episodes began streaming on July 31.

Must watch this in Chinese though. Very different experience , nothing like a normal historical fantasy anime.

Oh, this is very nice to see! Hopefully, this'll out turn out to be a positive experience for the Japanese anime community.

I found it a little hard to adapt to the Chinese dubs so maybe I'll check out the Japanese dub, granted if the subtitles will be available. Would be a good recap, for starters.

I hope they do the first two seasons together, since season 1 is 15 episodes and 2 is 8, so it would make sense to put them together

Didn't expect MDZS to receive a Japanese dub tbh

For once I'll stick with the original Chinese dub though, it just fits the series perfectly

What is with that summary? If not for character names there is now way in hell I would've recognized the story.

It's kind of strange Netflix hadn't nabbed it already with how popular The Untamed turned out.

LOL Since when did China start creating anime? Whenever I call anime "Chinese cartoons", it's more of a joke and now, there are actually literal Chinese cartoons lmao

Great, I've been putting this off for a long time because I can't get used to listening to Chinese, now I can finally watch it in Japanese instead.

Ooohh! Perfect chance to re-watch it then! I already know it's going to feel weird watching this in Japanese. I'm so used to the Chinese names and grammar.

I guess they will change things around with the names. Like, in Chinese, we have to keep up with three different names with every character lol I wonder if the Japanese dub will make it easier for people who aren't used to the Chinese version or are very new to this series.

I'm really looking forward to this~

Do you live under a rock? China does create lots of "anime". They don't even call it that. It's called donghua.

You'll be surprised at how many people are as big of a fan of donghuas like there are for anime.

A trailer without showcasing any of the dub voices... Lmao. But yeah, I feel like a dub for this would just be 100% shit. Watched it already with sub, and to those who will, it's very confusing at the start because of the timelines. There's a thread on (S1/S2) that says it.

I doubt it's ready yet, sub-only version will only start airing next month.

They'll probably use JP audio drama seiyuu.

that word sounds very similar to douga.
so I looked it up and they are very similar terms if you break up the kanji
动画(donghua) and 動画(douga)
just that douga can mean a general video I think

Donghua is chinese. 动 means moving and 画 means art/drawing. When put together it means Animation . And douga is probably Japanese as it is not used in chinese

I know and that's why I'm comparing the two since Japanese borrows characters from Mandarin
https://tangorin.com/words?search=%E5%8B%95%E7%94%BB
check the Pinyin because of kunyomi vs onyomi for example dou is read as dong and ga is read as huà although both have slightly different understandings of the characters because cultural differences. think the same stands for manga vs manhua..

The Japanese dub will bring a lot of new fans to the franchise so it can't be a negative aspect as there are many anime fans that couldn't watch the original because of not being used to listening to Chinese; I had a hard time watching as well in the beginning but it is really worth it!! (read the novel too~)
Going to watch this out of curiosity of course. Hopefully they don't change the names (the synopsis was lowkey weird ngl).

Excited to hear that the anime will receive Japanese dub too. I listened to the Japanese dub of the drama cd a few months ago. In the drama cd Wei Ying is voiced by Suzuki Tatsuhisa and Lan Zhan by Hino Satoshi. I got too used to with the Chinese version but will still watch the Japanese dub if it's available.

I recommend watching it in Chinese, then Japanese. I've already seen this beautiful show once (currently rewatching it) and I'll be happy to give the Japanese dub a chance.

Needed to re read it 3 times to get it. How did they manage that, <crazy fairy magic road>... Even Airplane Shooting Towards The Sky would be ashamed ;-;

Absolutely!
Chinese sound is gorgeous, voices and music. Wei WuXian in the animation totally enriches the character of the novel, his ever-kind and teasing timbre resonates with the book, so together it is a very powerful artistic impression.

I 'm not a fan of the dubbing of Mo Dao Zu Shi because it takes away alot of the Chinese original. I'm going to stick with the original version of the anime/donghua even so it's tempting to watch it in Japanese.

Si us tge dub out yet. I am personally more interested in the Japanese Audience reception to this. more than the dub itself.

I already know they changed the Opening and ending songs. that alone felt to Anime and Japanese (If you know what I mean) as the Chinese Opening and ending kept to more of a mystic feel and the lyrics of that opening where deep and thoughtful.

Anyway if anyone knows of any Japanese reviewers on Youtube. I would be interested in seeing what they thought of the show.

Honestly surprised Kings Avatar hasn't gotten a Japanese dub yet.
