Shes 172 cm not 200... I dont get it

I've not seen this anime but I can quickly comment on this.

12cm = around 5 inches.

Japan's average male height is 160cm (5'2.5), which makes the main guy 1.5 inches shorter. That doesn't sound like much but as someone below average height, it SUCKS.

Japan's average female height is 148cm (4'8.5), which makes the main girl 10 whole inches taller.

Your research was not only wrong but in addition to that, anime isn't made for the west, it's made for the Japanese anime fanbase. That's why it's perfectly reasonable - in the original context, it's fine.

She's an asian. The main focus was in Japan. The audience was intended for the Japanese people. Of course 172cm would be very tall for an asian woman. What average height? What Europe? A quick google would debunk your 'research' easily. 'Average height for japanese woman' and press enter. 148cm. Easy.

That said my point stands even for an asian country shes not that big.
An anime which did that right imo was ore monogatari where the huge male lead was 2m big and main girl I think 150ish cm.
Now I think 200cm for this shows female protagonist would be too much but at least give her 190cm because otherwise all the struggles big people have are non existent for her.

Yeah the study is from 2005/2007
And the anime is from 2007, the source material propably from around 2004 so the study fits the timeframe better than a modern study

So the wiki you linked says,average female is 158.5cm (5'2.5") at age 19 (1985-2019), and the next slot of average heights by table has women in a range of 156.5cm (5'1.5")-158.6cm (5'2.5"), (2005-2018). So we will go on the high end and say 158.6cm (5'2.5")

For men its 172.1cm (5'8") at age 19 (1985-2019), and the next slot of average heights by table has men in a range of 170.6cm (5'7")-173.3cm (5'8"), (2005-2018). So we will go on the high end and say 173.3cm (5'8")

Our MCs are 156cm (5'1.5") and 172 (5'8"). So we're talking almost a half foot height difference. The height roles are LITERALLY reversed. In fact Otani is technically SHORTER (not by much but proving a point here) than even the low end of Japanese women in your wiki. While Risa (Lisa) is 172cm (5'8") which is on par with average male height. The show demonstrates this perfectly as she is eye to eye with most male characters as seen in scenes with his Jr high basketball friends, while she "towers over" Otani by a half foot. They only show her as a giant when next to Otani or her shorter girlfriends. You can't bring up other countries as this is set in Japan. You can't bring your own stats or notions on what "normal" height is since you aren't what the source is based on or the intended audience. The show is only meant to show the flip of roles when the female MC is taller than the male. You can't say "half the audience" because once again the intended audience would see her as abnormal, since it's based on Japanese heights. All this is based the stats from your link.

As for your question on why they are set on 172cm. Look at your wiki again. It's about 5'8", the average height for Japanese men at age 19. It's like their goal was to idk, flip the script with a rom com and make the girl the tall one and the guy the short one based on the average height of people in Japan, for a Japanese audience without going over the top and leaving it in the realm of possibility by not making her an 8ft tall urban legend, or like a show/manga similar to Ore Monogatari that came out a decade after this show/manga. Weird.

There is large difference bw average height from different resources. Acc to Wikipedia it
Japan for Male: 171.8 cm (5 ft 7+1⁄2 in) For Female 158.6 cm (5 ft 2+1⁄2 in)
On the other hand According to Japan's National Health and Nutrition Survey, the average height was still only 160.3cm (5'2”) for men and 148.9cm (4'9”) for women

It is shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult.

Not seen this anime how old is she? That would make a difference if she's say something like 14 or 15.

It’s always the westerners applying their western viewpoints in an Asian anime and calling the concept dumb for not being able to relate to it. Like are you guys just stupid or what? I get y’all are used to tall people because holy crap some women in your country are huge (I never knew women could reach 5’8” until I met a white girl while studying abroad), but for us Asians, it’s not exactly the norm.

For context, I’m 169cm. Growing up, I was always the tallest in class. From primary to high school, I was always paired off with girls during school dances to balance out the students. For Asian girls like me who are like 5’6” and up, it’s normal to develop a complex for our heights.
