Horrible frame animation that is ugly for being slow and awkward, with ridiculous pacing to the story and poor portrayal of the characters.
Sonya sobbing to the death of Chihaya who she just met is exaggerated.
Chihaya and Sonya not having a hint of their origin is idiotic as well.
A meaningless installation of Bright.
I wish they didn't allow this and made a direct sequel of the original instead.
... The action wasn't bad, but overall it's mediocre and bland.
Even Mamoru's performance was flat which I believe is the director's fault. 2/10.
The movements of background characters was refreshing, they were individuals, not faceless blobs. The main characters would also move and make expressions too, even when not talking.
Some of the fighting was pretty dumb, and Sonya was bipolar really; a manic, wild animal one minute and a timid little lady at other times.
I never saw the original (live action) film, but it seems like some chunks of plot are missing :/
Throwing the wand away was just plain stupid, isn't Sonya supposed to take it to her new homeland or was all that forgotten? Aren't the evil guys going to find it?
Did not expect this kind of a 'prequel' kind of movie, the 3D render style sure was different as advertised, and I wonder which engine they used for this as I would honestly like to see this with different render settings than this attempt to cartoonify with a cellshading render preset that you probably could find for free for Unreal Engine 4 or something. But the actual choice for this one or at least this kind of quality dial (which is actually low) in both terms of modeling and texturing was rather poor, even with this cellsheded output and to see some textures for walls or buildings being reused multiple times where uv-maps weren't properly mapped making the texture stretched out looking, made it almost feel like a beginners attempt in this kind of style, not something I'd expect from a studio with quite a bit of capital.
Story wise it wasn't bad, yet it was rather generic, a decent beginning with a slight backstory and a 'the good guys' win ending. Nothing more to be said about this as the relations between the characters were like instant set, which made the over dramatic emotions showed near the end just overly done as in the end they were just bodyguards for hire.
All in all not bad, but imo they could've done a lot better, and if this was made in Unreal, then I'd honestly would love to see different render setting outputs for it.
i am not an animation snob. i don't inherently mind cgi (i actually enjoyed the "new" Berserk and watch plenty of chinese donghua that's in cgi)
but this... this was painful to watch. maybe i could've gotten past the mediocre/poor cgi animation quality, but i could NOT get past the camera flopping around like that, like we're viewing the opening battle through the eyes of a bobblehead doll in the middle of bobbling
yes, i'm saying i turned it off within the first minute or two haha. that opening battle sequence... i'm out
fwiw, i thought the english va that was doing the opening voice over had potential. i feel like if it were an audio book i wouldn't mind listening to it for an hour and HEARING the story. i just can't watch THAT
