You won't understand most of the stuff that's happening until later eps, so just keep watching; unless you feel like you won't end up liking it.

You aren't supposed to. The story is told non linearly. There are multiple plot points that happened at different times but they eventually will converge and the story slowly will make sense. Main reason I recommend just watching the show in one go if you can.

It’s easier to understand in the long run when you can see the full picture of how the different stories connect and how the timeline is set up. The different timelines make it slightly confusing but just know that there are eventually three main timelines “an event before the train jacking” “the events happening on the train” and “what happens almost immediately after” then there are scenes cut from random points in time mixed in everywhere. I swear it makes more sense once you finish…..

Baccano isn't told in a linear fashion. The events happen all over the place and you're left to piece it all together. It really won't start fully making sense until the last few episodes

Baccano is like a Quentin Tarantino movie, the scenes are chronologically out of order. It’s going to make sense the more you watch it

As the story progresses you will learn more and more. I think the beginning is meant to bring up questions and you have to watch in order to connect everything together. Baccano is one of those anime where if you go back to episode 1 after completing it, you will be like OH IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW

It’s like pulp fiction, it’ll all come together midway- to the end

The anime uses a nonlinear structure that jumps around the first 3 volumes of the light novels while also jumping around parts of volume 4 and for the ovas they partially adapt volume 14 but the light novels are alot more easier to follow and have more material and cut characters content.

I highly recommend to people who want more baccano to read the light novels.
