Is this based on a true story about Thorfinn over 1000 years ago? Or this is completely made up by anime?

The characters in this story are based on historical people and their lives (they history was ofc a bit changed to have good plot)

It does use their names but the story isn't factual in any way except certain historical events.

Thorkell the tall, Thorfinn Karlsefni, Canute the great, Leif Erikson are known historical figures. They are from the age of vikings. But the entire plot is semi-fictional to make the story a bit interesting, and the anime is more dramatic to make it more enjoyable

The story is made up, but the characters are based off of real people. Some characters like Canute or Thorkell have historically accurate backstories in the show, but others like Thorfinn, have been changed and can be considered entirely fictional. (Thorfinn irl was an explorer like Leif, not a viking warrior, and Thors did not exist irl)

There is a channel on YT called 'Vikings react', I've watched their discussions about the show, if you are interested about the historic accuracy you can check them out, they talked not only about the characters but also about the clothing, weapons, the design of characters, events from different sagas that appear in the show etc
So from what I understood Vinland is pretty much a combination of real historic figures and events with viking stories that are often exaggerated so in that aspect its unrealistic

Some like Canute, Thorkell, King Sweyn, and Leif Erikson are, for the most part, accurate portrayals of their real-life counterparts. However, Thorfinn himself, while being a real person, is way different in Vinland Saga as he was an explorer in real life and not a Viking. Askeladd is based on a Norwegian folk tale, and his personality is based on a real Icelantic Chieftain known as "Olaf the Peacock". As for the events and battles in the series, they are mostly accurate with a few exceptions.

The Vinland sagas are real stories, and a lot of the characters in VS are based on real people, but the story we’ve been given in this format is drastically different than the actual ones that are part of the real Vinland sagas.

Not sure about Thorfinn, but Thorkell and Canute are genuine Danish figures who invaded (and conquered) England in the 900s
