How did the entire JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise avoid lawsuits? Many of the characters and stands are named after real musicians/bands, a lot of them probably aren't too fond of Araki using their songs/names as references. Especially Prince, considering his agency threatened to sue if he didn't receive royalties.

I've seen speculation of these being the reasons:

1. Japan's licensing/copyright/fair use laws. This could be the explanation for what happens in Stone Ocean.

2. When translated to English the names are changed. For example, Killer Queen is changed to Deadly Queen.
If I had to choose between One Piece and a girlfriend...I think I'll go with One Piece

There are literally US presidents appearing in many manga and anime, don't think Japan really cares about those or let's the Outsiderz care about it, it's not like they are using the songs (probably, I never made it that far into the show), if you watched the Scott the voz video about same name games, you would know that names don't really matter as much unless something is very highly copyrighted, like there are 3 different star fox games thar came out within a decade of each other, and the Nintendo one was the last, and all they had to do was change the name outside of Japan for completely different reasons

For the songs part, they use actual songs as end credits but idk if that counts.

Most of those names are not trademarked because they are just not so uncommon words and phrases like "Kiss". Some translations are actually changing names just for the safety

It’s clearly different that JoJo is made in an old, vintage style. Like 80 or 90’style. For reference, see Kujo Jotaro suit or Joseph’s. Anyway, I love this.

We can see JoJo doesn’t respect entirely lawsuit, but it’s fine, because that was the ideas of Hirohiko Araki and if you ask me, it perfectly matches the current period of the anime launch.

Not a legal expert, but I don't think using the names of songs in your creative work is illegal. How would reviews work, if you can't even call the song by their name

Because in your head this is a really exciting and debateable Thing...

But in reality it isn't and there were no problems, at all, cause nothing illegal was going on.

Changing the names in the English version is more of a measure to avoid any potential lawsuit, legitimate or not, because lawsuits are expensive. Back when Araki was writing those older chapters there was basically no chance that the bands referenced would find out about it. Once the manga was localized they decided to take further precautions. It's kind of like the M. Bison situation.

simple the creator named them after them because he is big fan. law suit would come in if he used their likeness without their permission. also I don't they mind it

not a legal expert because it infringes if the piece you made includes their name AND makes money at the same time
