First time I seen them use a joke meant for JP in the dub

This happens in episode 7 but now Im wondering if I missed other ones in the other episodes (currently looking only watched up until episode 12, will update if I find any)

In Episode 7, when they are arguing halfway through the episode, Risa calls Otani a "Dumb Sea Monkey" and hes like "Wait isnt that the name of the rapper we both like?" and Risa says "No cause we kept his japanese name for the english dub"... the joke obviously being that the rapper they like Umibōzu would had been called Sea Monkey if they had translated his name.

In the original japanese version she just calls him an imbecile and he just says "What I never heard someone use that word before"

Just thought it was really clever what they did and now im tryna see if I missed other stuff in the anime like this!

EDIT:

-Episode 13, about 5 minutes in, Risa refers to her friends as "dumb bakas", no idea why they decided to keep the japanese for that one lol

-Episode 14: about 8 minutes in when they teacher walks into the room, in the original JP they say they are tired of seeing him and that he looks like a gorilla, he just tells them to stop, for the dub, they changed the lines to "Him again? C`mon animators draw a new teacher!" and the teacher says "Allrigth be nice to them, they are underpaid (anime industry in japan is considered a "black company" btw). That one gave me Ghost Stories vibes lol

-Episode 18: their teacher is talking to them about what would happen if they dont study at the beginning of the episode, and he says "If you dont study you will end up as an underappreciated teacher or worse.. a VOICE ACTOR" that one was funny to me, because there is that one completely toxic and vile portion of the anime fanbase that completely despise english dub, and sh@# all over their work, even when the english VA do their best (ex: the dub for this very anime).

-Episode 21: Uh this one was actually confusing in the english dub, in the original Nakao calls them "bathers" when hes pretending to be an alpha, the other characters like "did he mean bother?" the joke being I think that both words share the same kanji? in the dub Nakao instead calls himself "A total atomination (w/e that means), then the other characters say similar sounding words trying to figure out what he meant... in both version Risa holds a sign showing kanji for Bather... so yah that one was pretty confusing in both versions x _ x

This is cool! I always thought the show had a lot of humor that would be hard to translate, so I appreciate that the dub seems to be a little tongue in cheek about it. I think that’s a good approach.

This is the first I’ve heard of it too!

I have the 4 disc DVD set but I never even checked if there was an English dub attached to it lol

I wish more people watched Chobits.

@thischeetobussin Yes there is, it actually got dubbed like last year... after 20 years or w/e 0_0 shows you how much they believed in this being a hit cause dubbing aint cheap, its kinda like how Netflix made a season 3 for "From Me To You" like 15 years later

@Skoorb Its probably cause this dub was made like 20 years after the anime came out, so it wouldn't be included in those DVDs, guess the anime was very popular if they were willing to invest in dubbing a fairly old anime.

EDIT: Also Ima watch Chobits rigth now (saw ur sig lol) apparently that one has a dub too 0_0
