I read the play as well. I read multiple of Shakespeares plays and like them. especially Hamlet is one of my favourites. but then again Romeo and Juliet always has that tragic but passionate love in it, which will make it stay a classic.
Still I personally think you can't compare it with the anime since they aren't alike. even though there are definitly pieces and lines taken from the play.
I haven't read the actual play but I know the story.
Honestly, I did not like the way the play seemed to go. I realize not having read the words of the play- some people might think I have no right to have an opinion about it- but I did read a lot about it. Many, many different telling and have seen it different times in animated shows as a kid.
I was home schooled and my mother hated (Very much) Shakespeare’s plays- so she never made me (Never forced me) to read them, as she had been forced. Also I' dyslexic so I have trouble with the Shakespearian language.
I have read a lot about the plays he wrote- When I was a kid I got into it because I use to watch an American/Korean(I think) animated series called: Gargoyles; which as it progressed used a lot of characters from things such as "A midsummer’s nights dream" and some from Hamlet and possibly others (Can't remember them all- some characters names were quite well known: Demona, McBeth, Titania, Puck, Oberon- Although they were all altered to fit the story).
And it fascinated me how they were able to incorporate it into a police/beauty and the beast story (It had a LOT of different components and flowed quite nicely- including Arthurian legends from Britain).
So I read about them, even though I don't dare touch the plays. I really think they'd cause trouble with my dyslexia.
In any case, I did not like what I read of the play for some reasons that this anime did not have- mainly it being that she and Romeo were less selfish here in the anime and still loved each other just as much… maybe even more.
The ending of the play always seemed more cold to me, rather than romantic. And the anime seemed sweeter, and warmer and much nicer all around than what I read of the play and I’m glad I put my doubts about the anime aside and watched it anyway.
I saw the play saw the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio then the anime.
To tell you the truth I love the anime version more I could undertsand finnaly what they meant to say!!
I love the anime version the movie then play!!
