THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THESE EPISODES.
----------------------------------------
"Mermaid Forest" is the anime show based on the comics by Rumiko Takahashi. The show is categorized as a kaidan (horror show) and it deals with mermaids and immortals who ate the flesh of a mermaid. The show consists of 13 episodes (8 stories). The episodes are not in chronological order. It took more than 10 years the comics to be published and the comics haven't been finished yet.

My impression for the show is so-so. The stories closely follow the original. The characters are depicted more sophisticated than the original. The motion of the picture is not so smooth, but it's OK. However the original idea may have come from vampire stories in Europe, it's a good adaptation for Japanese kaidan.

I came across this anime by accident, tempted by the mysterious title, not knowing that this is a horror saga. Considering the animation is from 2003, so quite old, you will rather concentrate on the plot, which is interesting. After the first two episodes I must admit, that it's been long since I last watched such an unusual anime. It sucked me really in!

What impressed me most is with how the characters are dealing with all the emotions like sadness, loneliness, love, prejudice, harm, hatred, jealousy, looking for a "cure" to the course/ fate? The other thing are the individual tragedies, in each episode or pair of episodes you get to see a different story from the past, all connected to either striving for mermaid flesh, beauty, youth, wanting or not wanting to become immortal.

The scenes of killing are sometimes more realistic sometimes less. The big eyes of the Deformed Ones are hilarious, look rather funny than scary.
As mentioned, you will definitely find something to point out as a weakness of the anime, but if I you look for a good mystical sage, which story goes to more than 800 years ago, than it is really worth watching.

I wished a bit more of a horror show...didn't get it tho.
