Shit, that was fucking depressing! Really well put together too, I think this might be my favorite episode so far even though there's zero fighting or clever strategy. It really captured the feelings of departure so well.

Agreed. Favorite episode so far. Very depressing, very character driven. Really brought the series up for me. I hope more episodes have the impact on the viewer that this one did. Really illustrates the potential here.

I really enjoyed this episode more than some of the action ones. Really drives home what's at stake here.

Made me wonder who I would want to talk to for my last 5 minutes...

The scene with Kodai whistling while looking at the stars reminded me of Cowboy Bebop. Really powerful scene.

Awesome episode where they say goodbye for at least a year from their family and friends! While a slower episode, I did really like it! Let's see what's next.

It is the best episode of Yamato, but I disliked it. The reason is that, to me, it seems have a lot of propaganda about the war. Since I began to watch Yamato it call my attention the description of the destruction of the Earth and the historical context of the serie. In the seventies the Cold War have to all the people with the fear to the Third World War, probably the last one thanks to the atomic bombs. The series is a clear dystopia about how would be the earth after a war between the USA and the URSS.
Particulary, in this episode the battleship Yamato is show as a icon in the Earth "All people want to know about the Yamato". I believe this is a clear incitation to the investigation about the real Yamato and its rol in the Second World War. After that the comuncation with the familiars show the relation between the civilians and the militars. A boy with a model kit of Yamato, an old man called Tokugawa and what to said about the girl: "You need to be married and have many children for the future of the Earth..." It only want to show the rol of the soldiers in the society and how they have abandon everything for the Earth or Japan as I see it.

The best episode so far. One might say nothing really happened but it was a very powerful and, as others have already said, depressing episode.

It made me wonder what would I like to talk about if I had only 5 minutes and I would not see my family for another year...

Came to say same thing that almost eveyone else . Real first standout episode from the series. I also much prefer episodes like this over the ones with action. Wistfulness is one thing that Matsumoto does well.

I'm assuming that you haven't watched 2199. I believe that the scene in the old one was emotional as hell, but the speech the Captain gives in the remake is so much more impactful in my opinion.

No i haven't but i might check it out someday. It wary of it though because big part of the appeal of these older shows is the music from the composer. Don't know the name of the composer but i'm pretty sure it's the same one that did Galaxy Express 999 also. Also the new style isn't as appealing but i might still give it a chance.

Do consider checking it out. You are right about the music though. Sadly, the music of the original was lost, so the original composer's son had to listen and transcribe the music again through ear, so it isn't as good. Although, I think one of the pieces they did better this time around was the opening.
