Alright guys, time to put this 'admin' powers to good use.
I was thinking of having a summer contest, seeing as how it's our main activity here. Since the summer is about liberty and freedom, because in most cases school has ended for the summer vacations, why not we have a contest that allows members to write 'freely '

The goal of the contest would be a contest of who has the best genre. Meaning: We'll have a number of genres to choose from (Action, Horror, Comedy, Romance, etc.), note, the contestants are allowed to choose multiple. Then once they choose their genres, they must write a story based on that genre. We'll have polls for all the genres we gave:
ex: best action: >Insert name here<
best romance: >Insert name here<
etc.

I don`t know whether or not to have a word count limit or a limit as to how many genres to choose from; but this is the base idea.

Any suggestions?

You probably wouldn't want to have to many genres as not many people enter; I think the most we've had at one time was 7. I would suggest having 2 or 3 especially if we're going to be voting on stories based on the different genres.

This is just an idea (and also going off previous contests) but what if you have different voting categories. You can still have the best action, best romance, etc., but also have eg. best character. People have different strengths and weaknesses in writing and some people are better at writing character driven stories while others are better at writing plot driven stories. Allowing for a couple of different categories would let people to have a bit more freedom and might let them be more successful in other aspects of their stories.

I think you should have a word limit; at the very least a minimum that they have to reach. Probably around 1000-1500 would be a good minimum; that's about a page and a half and you can usually get a good story, or a start to a story, in that without too much padding.

One other thing, have it so that people have to write a new story for the contest. This is a chance for people to start showing off their skills but you want people to have a level playing field. It can also be a chance for us to see where our weaknesses are and where we need to improve.

Those are just my thoughts but it's really up to you and how you want to approach it.

Well this isn't mine, I'm just another member of the club, nothing special.

I agree that the number of genres should be limited to some extent and we should all post new stories to show our true skill and imagination.

A word minimum would be preferable yes, but a maximum would, at least to me, not be liked to the contestants, seeing as how many of us can get carried away with our story telling that we no longer care if it's too long or too short.

I would say soon, perhaps Friday or Saturday? Also take into consideration how long you want it to go for and what day you would want it to end. My suggestion would be to start on the 2nd and then have the contest close on the 25th; that gives us 3 and a bit weeks to write and it also gives us the weekend to finish if we run out of time (or leave it to the last minute ;P).

In order to ensure that there is a level playing field I would set a minimum and a maximum word limit with 10-15% leeway on both ends, much like a university assignment. I will be quite busy next week but after that I'd love to sit and write something for MAL.

Please keep me updated this sounds like fun.

I agree with Apatch on the word limit. I haven't put in my opinion on it yet, but I believe that he's right that it would keep the contest a bit more fair.
If someone writes a novel, and another person writes a short story, there's a disparity in what can be developed in each.

Perhaps you should write up a rough draft of a rule sheet for the contest, and then more opinions can be given from then on in?

Okay, I have two comments. The first is on the word limit. Along with what I said before, I also wouldn't want to read a lot of 10,000+ word stories. I barely got through all of the last few contests submissions. And I'm not so sure about other people, but I don't think they all want to read long stories that may be submitted if there is no word limit.

The second is about the genre's, where you said there's a max of three. I feel that for the contest, a story should pick one genre as it's main, for voting. The max of three either makes it feel restrictive, as in you can't include the elements of these genre's because you picked other genre's. Or it gives off the impression that you can submit in multiple genre's for voting.

These are just my opinions, though, I have no idea what other people will think.

I think the stories should be around 2000-4000 words long. Anything else is kinda low or high, and that way people can work on refining their stories.

I also agree with Cccel on the whole genre thing. One main genre for a story. If the story happens to include other genre(s), it won't count for those ones when it comes time to vote.

So I have a question about the contest theme.

Freedom. At first the description seem to say that it's about anything. We can choose any subject to write about. (Am I right so far?) But then the last line somewhere says, "freedom to write."

So is the theme the freedom to write or it's a themeless theme? O:

Well there isn't much meaning to it. The goal of this contest is to choose a genre from the choices you are given and write your story based on it, if u would like any other genres please tell. There are going to be votes for best use of genre, best story, etc. So the 'Freedom' is technically there. You just have to choose what you want to write on.

I'm fairly sure the theme is, freedom. So what I get out of it is, our stories must follow a theme of freedom.

What I really mean is just write anything, so you can do that too.

This will be interesting think i will post up my first writing for the contest... Do we post it in or do we upload texts i am not sure have not been in the previous contests before since i was not really sure what to do other than that one time i wrote a poem and got a lot of nice comments anyways...

I am guessing the TOPIC : Freedom
The Genre??? why waste time on genre since lots of people could have multiple genres but the word limit would help to keep people putting in a bunch of plots rather than one solid plot that can get to the point rather than drag on for 20000 words and have some of us go blind from reading too much.

I suggest that you keep the best romance and best action awards open but scrap the idea of a genre and just follow a theme of Freedom. How the story relates to Freedom can vary and so some might have romance , some might have action and some might have action and romance. But with a word limit it comes down to deciding whether you want to have more detailed action or better romance or a mix of both that does not go into too much detail.

Sorry for that long post here is the main point
Topic : Freedom
Genre : Any
Word Limit : 2000 to 4000 with a 200 upper or lower word limit

PS : hope this was helpful input
stop lookin for a sign(ature) and move along

Okay let me clarify. Freedom, is not the main theme!

You hav to choose a genre then write 'any' story you want based on the genre you chose. we'll then vote for best use of genre, best story, best feels, etc.

So no, FREEDOM IS NOT THE MAIN THEME. I'm just referring to the fact that you can write anything.

So, I have a question if this forum is still thread active.

Will there be any competitions without a word limit? Most of my stories are usually about 18 ~ 25k words. >_>

I say yes. Someday. I'll ask if we can do that.

Alright. Cool. I mean, I could write something short - but I really don't think its going to be very good.

Most of my writing requires proper time and character development, moments of slow, and learning, then moments of quickened pace. Much like the rhythms of a roller coaster.

Really hard to convey in such a small frame.

I guess since I have nothing better to do I will review each of the previously submitted stories. :)
