May be it's out of respect to his friend who gave him Arcadia as a means to his freedom? It's an empty speech, incoherent. No problem in going to save Mayu, this part makes sense, the people on the Arcadia wasn't really fighting for Earth, the people on the Arcadia had "officially" abandoned Earth. Harlock also had the responsibility off fulling his promise to his friend regarding Mayu. But Mayu as a symbol of freedom? Only in the sense that she was a child and he could believe that she would grow to be a decent human, but the way he puts it, no. On the contrary, she becomes something that constrains their freedom. They don't have a choice, they have to always go to her no matter what, stealing them their choices. And of course is worse for Mayu, because she has no freedom, on the contrary, Harlock prevents her from having any freedom, always forcing decisions on her, always deciding for her. She never manages to do anything she wants, she has zero freedom. The only instance she is a bit free is when she flees the hideout near the end with the orphans. She flees from the prison Harlock puts her. |

| Wtf was the point of throwing waves of unarmed Mazone at Harlock? The trap was good and clever but then add something completely stupid like that. If they truly wanted him dead then they could've just showered him with lasers and/or grenades. Hell, some of them could've blown themselves up next to him. |

| The Mazon jumping down into the pit with Harlock was a real boneheaded decision. It was pretty cool to see Miime shooting that laser pistol. |
