At this point, we are almost at the edge of what manga can be. And yet, Baby Boom holds the etymology as rarely: it is here about a moving image, colored magma initially shapeless, which requires squinting the eyes in order to see something there. A visual gibberish, in appearance, at first, but which gradually clears up to reveal sketches of an acid funny, cute without being imperatively kawai. From what at first glance looks like a challenge, an exercise in style (drawing childish sequences without dialogue, with two colored markers giving the whole rainbow parade air), we finally derive direct pleasure.

But also the happiness ... of seeing an object not formatted by the usual cadence of industrial manga, a small nugget that clearly questions the limits (narrative, aesthetic) of a discipline, without keeping undrinkable pavement either. In the field, undoubtedly one of the most original works that I have held in my hands.

A ce stade, on est presque à la lisière de ce que le manga peut-être. Et pourtant, Baby Boom tient l'étymologie comme rarement : il s'agit ici d'une image en mouvement, magma coloré d'abord informe, qui exige de plisser les yeux afin d'y voir quelque chose. Un charabia visuel, en apparence, d'abord, mais qui s'éclaircit peu à peu pour dévoiler des saynètes d'une drôlerie acide, mignonne sans être impérativement kawaï. De ce qui ressemble de prime abord à un défi, un exercice de style (dessiner sans dialogue des séquences enfantines, avec deux feutres de couleurs donnant des airs de parade arc-en-ciel au tout), on tire finalement un plaisir direct.

Mais aussi le bonheur de voir un objet non-formaté par l'habituelle cadence du manga indus, une petite pépite qui questionne clairement les limites (narratives, esthétiques) d'une discipline, sans tenir non plus du pavé imbuvable. Dans le domaine, assurément une des œuvres les plus originales que j'ai tenu entre mes mains.
