Goblin Slayer

Goblins are known for their ferocity, cunning, and rapid reproduction, but their reputation as the lowliest of monsters causes their threat to be overlooked. Raiding rural civilizations to kidnap females of other species for breeding, these vile creatures are free to continue their onslaught as adventurers turn a blind eye in favor of more rewarding assignments with larger bounties.

To commemorate her first day as a Porcelain-ranked adventurer, the 15-year-old Priestess joins a band of young, enthusiastic rookies to investigate a tribe of goblins responsible for the disappearance of several village women. Unprepared and inexperienced, the group soon faces its inevitable demise from an ambush while exploring a cave. With no one else left standing, the terrified Priestess accepts her fate—until the Goblin Slayer unexpectedly appears to not only rescue her with little effort, but destroy the entire goblin nest.

As a holder of the prestigious Silver rank, the Goblin Slayer allows her to accompany him as he assists the Adventurer's Guild in all goblin-related matters. Together with the Priestess, High Elf, Dwarf, and Lizardman, the armored warrior will not rest until every single goblin in the frontier lands has been eradicated for good.

Well-written

I thought this would be some bullshit, fanservice, fetish, power-fantasy anime but nah. The author was cooking.

I believe goblins are an allegory for Men's depravity. They are a force of nature, like natural disasters, so it may first seem as if Goblin Slayer is about Man vs Nature. It's really about Man vs Man's nature

Goblins are vengeful, act on lust, envy, pillage, and are apathetic. Every time you lust over fanservice and naked victims, a goblin is born. One who would do the worst to women if it was pleasurable. Luckily there is a literal white-knight who will slay them and protect women ... from Goblins.

"When the demon lord is killed, the world will be saved. But if the 15 year old girl, who was violated by Goblins, is looking for salvation... no one would care. No matter how many are slain, nothing changes"

Since the beginning of history Men acted on lust and even now multiple sexual abuses happen daily on Earth. Who will women call today? Will you slay your Goblins?

Mixed Feelings

Goblin Slayer is such a double edged sword. For every good thing, there is something atrocious to counteract it. It is hard to formulate everything as a proper written essay so I will do really long bullet points.

GOOD:
====
- It looks like it was written by someone who understands RPGs. I have always thought the spellcasting from D&D was interesting so it's nice to see it here. It's not about shitting out fireballs, it's about having spells with limited uses and trying to maximize their utility. If you spam everything, you won't have them when you need them.
- This is not a power fantasy. Goblin slayer ... is not an all powerful protagonist. He is someone who shows that he deserves to win due to resourcefulness and planning.
- Goblin Slayer is not really a hero nor a good role model for a hero. He is just someone driven by revenge and has a particular obsession with killing goblins specifically. Killing goblins won't save the world, but that's the only role he is interested in.
- The show does a good job of portraying plausible reason for why he is obsessed with goblins.
- The fights happen often and are interesting.
- The music is very hype sometimes and fits the world.
- The environments are drawn well.
====
BAD:
====
- Flattest characters in existence. Priest be nice. Confident elf do be arguing with dwarf (real creative). Lizard man be eatin cheese. Goblin slayer be wantin to kill goblins. That's all there is.
- Goblin Slayer's dialogue is annoying and pointless as fuck. Everything is "Okay", "I see", etc.
- Everyone else's dialogue is only slightly less trash. This is the worst show for watching characters talk.
- Fanservice doesn't happen often, but when it does it's kinda too much.
- Shoehorned harem aspect that doesn't make sense because they tried to establish Goblin Slayer as a weirdo at the start.
- Animation is meh.

Watch this if you wanna see goblins get killed in various ways. Don't watch if you expect good dialogue or characters.

Goblin Slayer (Crunchyroll)

I was really excited to watch this, as it had been on my list for quite some time. I’d seen spoilers of specific scenes online that piqued my interest. After wrapping up other shows, I stumbled upon Goblin Slayer on Crunchyroll and remembered it was on my list. No hesitation—it was finally time to watch this popular anime.

But one thing that bothered me a lot was the fact that NONE of the characters, not a single one, has a name. Everyone is referred to by their race or class. It’s like naming your dog “Dog” or if Pokémon were just called “Monsters.” What’s ... worse is that nobody even bothers to ask anyone else’s name. In this world, people are so self-absorbed that they have no empathy, sympathy, or even a shred of curiosity about each other. An elf is just "Elf," a dwarf is "Dwarf," and humans are called by their jobs or classes.

What a disappointment. Seriously, how do I even explain this anime?
1. It's as generic as it gets.
I should’ve known from the title—“Slayer” is all the rage now: Demon Slayer, Dragon Slayer, Goblin Slayer, and the list goes on.

2. The overused trope of the socially inept MC.
This cliché is unbearable at this point—how much longer will this trend last? The main character is a socially awkward brute, yet everyone loves him, especially the women. He’s a complete jerk with zero personality, but because he’s “super strong” and does the bare minimum, all the female characters are inexplicably infatuated with him. Spare me.

The MC’s values are generic, even within the world of the anime. Everyone else has a tragic backstory just like him, so he’s not special in any way. Yet, the story treats him as some universal savior just because he does what others avoid doing—which isn’t even true. Everyone hunts for rewards just like he does; they just leave the goblin tasks to him because he’s obsessed with them.

His dialogue is painfully repetitive. He constantly says things like “Okay” (Sō ka), “I am the Goblin Slayer” (Goburin Sureiyā da), or at most, “Are there goblins?” (Goburin da?). Annoying as hell. He says it at least ten times per episode. It’s infuriating and childish.

There’s nothing else to say about the MC because he’s so shallow. So, let’s move on to the next issue.

3. The unnecessary lewdness.
There’s absolutely no need for the semi-erotic scenes in this anime—zooms on breasts, exaggerated bouncing, and even scenes of rape. My theory is that if it weren’t for these controversial decisions, this anime wouldn’t even be popular. It’d just be another generic fantasy/adventure manga or anime.

All the female characters are silly, childish, with high-pitched voices, and ridiculously pure and innocent. They all irrationally adore the troglodyte that is “Goblin Slayer-san/Sama.” It’s absurd.

Most of these scenes are more obscene than erotic, add nothing to the plot, and often made my girlfriend uncomfortable. Clearly, this was made with a male audience in mind. As a man, I felt embarrassed by these pathetic attempts too. If you want eroticism, make it relevant to the story—don’t just shoehorn in bouncing boobs or butts. At that point, you might as well just watch hentai.

4. The goblins, the main premise of the anime.
The goblins are portrayed as global terrorists, trauma-inducing, malevolent creatures—a plague, a virus, or the worst kind of infestation. Yet nobody cares about them except the MC, who seems to be the only one that realizes what a problem they are.

Final Thoughts
All of this screams laziness on the author’s part. A disconnected and sloppy story, nameless characters, a generic and hollow plot, and a ridiculously overpowered MC that all the women adore. It feels like the adolescent fantasy of a frustrated man who doesn’t understand how life works.

The MC is so obsessed with his goal that he resembles a socially awkward child who’s never been diagnosed. He reminds me of that one weird guy in the back of the class who only talks about video games or UFOs, who can only answer “yes” or “no,” and whose social skills don’t improve over the years. Imagine a world where that behaviour is admired, and everyone, especially the girls, fawns over him. It’s gross, even disturbing, to think about.

Watching this anime felt like mental torture, and it’s now on my personal list of worst anime I’ve ever seen. I not only don’t recommend it, but it’s so generic that I’ll probably forget I even watched it. In fact, just days after finishing it, I can barely remember the characters or their names—oh wait, they don’t have any.
