RWBY: Hyousetsu Teikoku Review
Anime Relations: RWBY: Hyousetsu Teikoku
My review for RWBY:HT removed due to me comparing it to another series, which is its original self. Alas a rule is rule. So I decided to make it a blog post, whatever that is...
"TLDR at the bottom.
I never wrote a review before for an anime, but since there is no review for RWBY: Hyousetsu Teikoku, I decided to notify a potential viewer. This review is written after watching 3rd episode premier.
First of all; do not watch this if you haven't watched original RWBY animation. Anime spoils some of the great surprising moments for the viewer. As I understand they made this considering the viewer already watched the original as they move too fast in the early episodes. Even skipping whole scenes and locations along with the relationship progressions and experiences between characters.
The storytelling and comedic value is much more higher in the original. The characters are also more colorful, personality-wise, in the original.
Visually, comparing to animation, in the anime some frames are better looking, animation is more fluid in some places, however framing and battle choreography, therefore action, is much more better in the original animation. Anime is also more colorful and shiny but somehow feels less impactful on screen. I again want to iterate, due to framing and general rushed behavior of the anime, in some scenes comedic value is also taken a huge hit. A great example would be Pyrrha saving falling Jaune; Compare two scenes, Episode 2 ~9:40 (min ~31:50 mark if you are watching premiere in a single piece) in anime to Chapter 5 1:16 in animation. Watch how they compare with characters' personality and comedic value.
I also did not like some of the VA choices, not due to VA themselves but from the casting perspective. Some of them are also great picks however, in my humble opinion, all of them should be a great fit. I really really rarely pick English VA cast over Japanese VA cast but RWBY is one of those exceptions. Might be me watching the original first but, I do not see some of the future comedic scenes and personalities will be properly translated into the anime, due to VA choices. I can give examples for the future episodes and experiences for the past 3 episodes, but I won't. Also, it feels English VAs were more enthusiastic for their voices as well.
It's a nice and proud experience to see RWBY in a professional anime medium. However, that's all for this. It is an extra for a RWBY fan but not a medium to become a RWBY fan. And I encourage you to be a RWBY fan.
TL; DR: Do not watch, if you haven't seen the original. DO SEE THE ORIGINAL ANIMATION. Animation is really fun to watch and enjoyable.
