Chapter 1: Galaxium
Since the birth of mankind, humans have always waged war. Even today in the 26th century, war is more present than ever. When humans left their solar system to spread out in the galaxy, they brought their love for war with them. In this day and age, as it has been several times in history, war happened because of scarcity of resources. Intergalactic travel was discovered three centuries ago, when a new element called Galaxium, has been utilized for the first time as an infinitely powerful and immense source of energy. Therefore, fifty years after this major discovery, humans were able to accomplish the impossible by traveling faster than light, something they long envisioned in science-fiction stories during the past centuries.
The first galaxium was manufactured in laboratories. Then it was discovered that a much higher quality galaxium was scarcely available in the entire galaxy. That inevitably made the nations of the earth unite for the first time in history. Under a single state and government, they worked together as one, to explore the stars. Nevertheless, while the nations were United under a single government, they had some degree of autonomy.
Few decades after unification, some of the most powerful nations, using their autonomy as a pretext, sent out more and more colonies to mine for galaxium in outer space. Unfortunately, that led to an unfair distribution of its benefits. The weaker nations, unable to undertake such expensive colonization projects on their own, were left far behind. The United earth days were counted as they soon had no choice but to rebel and war erupted. The aftermath of the war was a new second unification of mankind under a new state. The Terran Empire was born thereof. This conflict saw large scale space battles for the first time, and would be forever remembered. But, it wasn’t going to be the war to end all wars. It was just, the beginning.
Humans had already expanded several thousand light years in the galaxy. There were several hundreds of inhabited planets. Fortunately for humanity, no threatening intelligent life form was found yet. Unfortunately, it also meant the lack of a common enemy to fight, thus giving them more time to fight among each other as their love for war was always as much present. That would happen sooner or later. Nearly after a century of relatively peaceful reign of the Terran Empire, a conflict erupted suddenly. This war would bring forth two new major powers. They would challenge the Terran Empire’s hold over the galaxy for decades to come.
Human population was nearly a hundred billion. The Terran Empire or commonly referred to as Terrania, with its sixty billion population, was in control of eighty percent of the colonized planets, or about twelve hundred inhabited planets. The United Colonies of Aldebaran, usually abbreviated as UCA, was originally a huge union of earth colonies with a population of about twenty billion people. They occupied about two hundred planets. A third, though tiny nation due its lands, but most formidable power, was a small nation called Atlantis.
Since its birth in 2569, hundred and fifteen years ago, the Atlantean state which is neither a republic nor a monarchy, has been envied by the whole galaxy. Due to its unimaginably huge reserves of galaxium on Atlantis, its capital planet, the Atlantean have since their self proclamation been under a tight stratocracy. Even though its population was only one hundred million inhabitants, almost all able men and women, between the age of eighteen to forty-five, were in its military.
Originally, Atlanteans were a colony sent out by the Terran Empire to mine galaxium on a remote solar system. They were called Colony 221. But little did anyone knew that they were going to discover the heavenly planet they now call home, Atlantis. Though just one planet with its small moon, Atlantis had more galaxium than the entire, hundreds of inhabited planets all combined. After few years of mining on a nearby star, the colonists had suddenly made that discovery. Unwilling to let go of this great windfall, the colony leader decided to not announce it to Terrania. They then undertook, carefully planned and coordinated actions for over a decade. After which, they self proclaimed themselves independent from Terrania. In fact they were the first colony to do so. Following widespread unrest in the empire, caused by Atlantis, several other colonies that would later unite to establish the UCA, rebelled.
Atlantis is just one planet. Compared to the several hundred planets of the Terrania and the UCA, they would become insignificant, even with their galaxium reserves. But due to the outstanding planning of the first leaders, for an entire decade, they brought millions of migrants under false pretexts, to work on the colony. The leaders also instigated a widespread rebellion to help distract Terrania away from their planet. Consequently, the rebellion of the Aldebaran colonies, helped create the state of Atlantis.
The Terran government at the time, didn’t care or think much about the ten million people colony of Atlantis. They wanted more understandably, to crush the more important, several billions Aldebaran rebels. The government also deemed very inaccurate, intelligence data suggesting unimaginable quantity of galaxium in Atlantis. All these factors, led the Atlanteans to benefit greatly from the war, and become a terrifying force to be reckoned with later.
The Atlanteans didn’t waste any time in using their galaxium to defend against an imminent Terrania’s attack. Therefore, they had developed a considerable military force. They brought over ten million people on the planet. They have constructed several defensive fortresses around their star, Plato. In just a decade, they had managed to bring metal and other supplies from all over the galaxy. This allowed them to establish the biggest space fleet. Unable to win against the UCA, Terrania somewhat recognized or tolerated Atlantis’ existence and power. At least, they wanted to trade galaxium with them, for the time being. They then focused all their strength to try and quell the rebels. This task would prove impossible for over a century.
In the present time, in 2686, the galaxy is as quiet and peaceful as a river without current. A year ago, Terrania and the UCA made peace after over a century of fighting. Atlantis had become ever more powerful but never expanded from their one planet. Their policy was to consolidate their strength and benefit from the riches and, or mutual destruction of the other two. But as peace reigned since, the next time the river of war’s current awakes, it would definitely take them away this time to the lands of chaos.
