Honestly, I have to agree with a lot of what you're saying. Firstly, whether or not a character is likeable is extremely subjective to the individual viewer. It's true that David did watch snuff films, which is why he was familiar with that director's work when he meets him later. However, in the dystopian future of Cyberpunk, I think we're supposed to believe that's the equivalent of looking up porn in today's world. It's something that we're embarrassed about, but everybody does it. It's meant to show just how far society has degraded morally as a corporate ruled dystopia. However, I still think that the show wanted us to see David as largely a victim of circumstance. He's certainly not a saint, but he loves his family and would be a relatively good guy under normal conditions. It's supposed to be shocking and somewhat sad that he falls into becoming a brutal gangster and on the path to one day go "cyber psycho". Since the show is so short, we really didn't have a lot of time to know David before all the shit happened and what he would have been like in better circumstances. So, using part of that short period to show him watching snuff films and then VR porn doesn't really help in terms of making us empathize with him or see his fall as tragic. However, this is also a "rule of cool" show like you were saying and it's not trying to be a psychological drama at the end of the day. I probably would have liked the show better if it had gone more the psychological drama route, but that's not what Cyberpunk the anime is all about.

I didn't mean that I quoted you wrong. I wanted to say that I called out the wrong person. I just liked something that you didn't. That's it.
Now that I've said that I will end this conversation and once again delete the edgyness on me comments. Have a nice day. |

These are all fair points. I enjoyed Lain, which is also my little brother's favorite anime. However, I tend to get frustrated with Chiaki more often than not.

In Chiaki's defense, there are many authors who believe it is the author's duty to keep a neutral voice and merely introduce the ideas without telling audiences the answers or trying to definitively tackle the themes they bring up. This puts the burden of thought on the audience and makes for a long lasting discussion that will hopefully provide some brain exercise. One of the key authors that led that charge was Anton Chekhov, who helped lead that style of storytelling to predominate in the 20th century. Most of the writers of the 19th century had no issue cramming morals down the audience's throat and beating them over the head with their own authorial voice. Just look Charles Dickens, Victor Hugo, Dumas, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, etc. Given, Chekhov was to put it mildly a WAAY better author than Chiaki. He also wrote extensive essays backing up his approach to storytelling and why he felt it was superior. I don't honestly feel Chiaki has quite the same dedication to aesthetics. He just likes to be super vague.

I enjoyed your comment on Chiaki Konaka. I completely agree. Even he would probably agree. People remember Lain and Texhnolyze, but he also wrote a LOT of shit. Armitage 1 and 2 were shit. Devil Lady was shit. He writes good anime maybe half the time at best, but his fans act like he's the 2nd coming of Shakespeare. Also I see you've added Mad Bull to your favorites. You are truly a man of fine taste sir!

Oh, those threads, with the one about the big3-4-5 I just repeated something I had heard somewhere else, it made sense to me, so no harm in making that idea travel a bit more.
Talking about Jojo, have you heard about the rumors for season 5 being in early production? I stopped watching one piece anime at... maybe around skypiea, after that I went full manga, and the only times I heard about the anime it was negative comments. Though this last arc is being adapted pretty well, the production staff was changed, the artstyle changed to in some parts, but the most notable change is that they are trying to make the fillers fit into the story by expanding what the manga had to cut away, so even if the pace is still slow and the fillers are still there, they look bearable now. Excell having dignity is something I would have never thought I would hear xD But I get you, they are pure chaos and they don't hide or embellish it. About seasonals, I'm thinking that watching seasonals is more of a lazy choice, since starting older shows with less buzz on them takes more effort, both in starting or in looking for the recommendations for them. Though, someone has to watch them new shows or there would be no ratings and recommendations to start with, so even if it may be lazy it has its use. I really should start watching something already completed (aside finishing the shows i've hanging) Excell seems like a good start. |

As always I'll wonder what did I say and in which context to warrant a compliment and a friend request, but those are details :u
I see you're not watching any seasonal show, aside the long running ones (the adaptation of the current arc of one piece is surprisingly above average, but you're a bit behind), do you usually don't follow the seasonal 1-2 cour shows? And ohh, you're watching excell saga, I need to properly re-start that one, I only saw bits when it aired on the local tv. |

My post about Naruto being better was just shitposting.
Personally I don't think that Shippuden (even without the filler) is equally good to any of the FMA versions. FMA does use a lot of shounen tropes (obviously because it's a shounen) but nowhere near as much as One Piece or Naruto. I would call those two a generic shounen, while FMA isn't. It isn't even battle focused, you don't see hours of discussions about power levels,vs duells etc. when people talk about it. No friendship power ups, heck there aren't that much power ups in general. Where is the haki, chakra, nen, ki etc.? FMA is very "shounenish", especially Brotherhood, but calling it the exact same thing as One Piece, Naruto that stretching it too much. Unlike those two it knew when to end. |
