The whole Sannan/Akesato thing was more developed in the sequel manga. The first manga Shinsengumi Imon Peace Maker was entirely adapted into anime form. The sequel manga is where all the development is at and after a few years hiatus Chrono brought it back and its now updating monthly on a website (I forgot which).
