LunaLena said: Just finished the series, and the Sakamato is dying theory doesn't hold up if you see episode 13.
His classmates find a newspaper where he's in one of the photos feeding birds, and the end of the episode has him actually taking off in a rocket while (once again) pulling off the impossible. So it looks like his plans to help colonize another planet are fully underway.
It still holds water because
the last scene is put in a way that it could be Kubota imagining it like the others did their versions, and the manga has more clues
Also episode 13 is non-canon and just anime-only compilations with an extra bit for the class so it wont count either way

There's this theory going on among the manga readers in which Sakamoto is DYING. And that is why he is ''leaving'' or whatever, according to the manga. I find it extremely interesting, as it makes a lot of sense.
Because I am a lazy person, I decided to copy/paste some of the comments I've seen on the last manga chapter or under this episode on some websites :
In case it's not clear to some people, Sakamoto is dying. That's the rumor the teachers confirm, why his classmates were all so sad, and ties in with his only regret being not having counted all the holes in the infirmary/hospital ceiling (meaning he'd been there a lot for treatment). Also why he, as a freshman, was allowed to be speaker for senior graduation. The manga makes it a bit more clear, and at kiss manga there's a better comment than mine explaining and confirming Sakamoto's illness.
And those pies! If you notice everyone's tears were covered up by a pie in the face. To show strength like Sakamoto always had. Then at the 21:33 mark, we see for the first time Sakamoto show emotion. It's a quick shot so you might need to pause, but it's really sad. Right after that you see him exiting with a pie on his face because he, like the others, began to cry.
Sakamoto lived his last year of life to its fullest! Such a tragic, beautiful story! ; ;
In the manga he kind of makes up an excuse (going to Mars for a project, though this is not actually possible at present time). Also there are some hints in the structure of the chapters (the cover page pictures him in a school locker and it kind of looks like he's a corpse in a casket); and when Hayabusa asks him if he's going for real to Mars he answers: "who knows?" implying the possibility he's told lies through all the chapter to not make other students suffer. Also if you read it you'll notice an eerie sadness in his face. There's definitely something going wrong in his life that can't be approached with his usual style, though he's always the best to hide his pain in front of others.
To make you feel worse, Sakamoto is actually dying and wanted to hide it from everyone else, im too sleepy to explain but the Opera song he sang in episode 9 was about a man, his son and the god of death, the son is very ill and his father is riding on his horse trying to get him to the doctor's village or something and on the way the son starts seeing the god of death and wants to play with him...etc by the time the father reaches the village his son had already died, plus in the final chapter sakamoto is laying back in a locker as if it were his Casket.
Some people who've already read the manga (me included) have another theory: he's dying. In the manga he kind of makes up an excuse (going to Mars for a project,
though this is not actually possible at present time). Also there are
some hints in the structure of the chapters (the cover page pictures him
in a school locker and it kind of looks like he's a corpse in a
casket); and when Hayabusa asks him if he's going for real to Mars he
answers: "who knows?" implying the possibility he's told lies through

I'd also like to add, since I don't remember seeing that particular point in those other comments, in the last chapter, Shou/Hayabusa asks Sakamoto ''Don't you have any regrets?'' and Sakamoto answers, word for word :
''If I were to have one... It would be not knowing... The exact number of holes in the infirmary's ceiling... I suppose''
Which pretty much means he has been spending a LOT of time in the infirmary doing just that, counting the number of holes in the ceiling, and probably not because he wanted to.
AAAAAND at chapter 22, or the snowball fight, basically, which is episode 11, you can see Kubota and Sakamoto talking at the beginning. Then Kubota adds, in his thoughts :
''Yes, from now on too... I can walk the same path as Sakamoto-kun.
That time, I still... Belived it.''
Romantic ankle pose this is favorite skill of Sakamoto. The end was unexpectable. 7/10 good one for comedy. Can't stop laughing in every moment of Sakamoto.
Just like many comedy anime, this show ran out of jokes around halfway through and then tried to do something else it wasn't meant to do.
It also has a weird balance between putting Sakamoto in the center and trying to make us care about the other characters, with the result that they end up feeling they take up too much space. Fukase is terrible, Sera could have been cut out entirely (I get it that not being funny is his whole character, but he still sucks) while Aina and Hayabusa could have had a bit more development. Acchan goes from bully, to gay, to trying to be Sakamoto's friend and ends with the weird twist of the last few episodes that doesn't make much sense. It's like he's 3 different people.
I just finished watching it and the ending was really emotional. I really believe 100% that Sakamoto actually has an illness that makes him always hospitalized and that's why he has never seen snow. In this last episode I imagined how his friends would feel when Sakamoto left him. really an interesting event. I'm giving 8/10 for this.
I seen many theory of him dying but I think the theory that he is an alien returning home fits more.... Reasons:
1) Alien and space topic continues to pop up.. at the Gokun he was asked if he believed aliens existEd and he said that they could be aliens themself.... he keeps mentioning he wants to have a career in NASA or going to America to take part in some research or becoming an astronaut...oh and mars
2) the weird bizarre things he do and sometimes it seems he doesn’t seem like human or common sense/knowledge of how society is, such as the time he has never seem snow... maybe his planet doesn’t have snow
3) another is during the last chaps when he was talking to the Sempai in the nurse office he said he rather go out and discover new land or whatever it could be taken as he come to study human and maybe want to take over
4) transfer student is the perfect cover plus it’s sakamoto if he just only moved to America for him it would totally be easy to meet them again but if he is going back to his planet it would be harder so that why he showed his emotions .....My theory is he is not dying but he is an alien
I saw "Handa kun" in the recommendations. Have you seen that? Is it good? Will I have to watch Gintama...it is so long though.
I haven't watched both Hana-kun and Gintama so I can't tell if it's good or not.
And I don't think you have to watch Gintama in order to watch Handa-kun though because they're not the same series.
Oh you haven't watched Gintama? You should get on it. It is one of the, maybe the funniest anime out there.
XD. Ofc they are not the same. I watched Gintama a few years back but at that time I hadn't watched enough anime to get the humor fully as Gintama is full of parodies of other anime. Now it has so many episodes that I don't think I can complete it (Although I'm sure if and when I start watching it, I would not want it to end at all. It's that good). I think its latest movie is very popular and high rated too cz that concluded the anime.
Anyways, I'm watching "danshi koukousei no nichijou" and it looks like fun too. I'll update my MAL after I watch 3-4 eps.

Ohhh I see, thanks for the information about Gintama! I just searched for it and found out that it has many episodes indeed!
I should also watch the anime you're currently watching. XD

Yeah. It's pretty good. Although it gets kinda monotonous. Did you watch FLCL? How'd you like it?
I was on a continuous shounen binge with my friends (had to watch BNHA again and One Punch Man both are great though) and I wanted a break from that. Sakamoto was an extremely refreshing one and Danshi kokosei no nichijou is really funny XD. I don't like slice of lives that much but due to this continuous shounen binge the shear difference in what I'm watching feels better!
There is this another anime that everyone is fond of but I didn't particularly like called "Nichijou". It was boring af. Seen that?
This is a nice show, at the beginning. Surprising. But you get tired of never watching anything funny. There are only clever-impossible ways to figure out the situation, it gets monotonous. Also, all the episodes have the same configuration: 2 small stories, the first always better than the second (so I always enjoyed the first 10 minutes of it, after that I got tired, but watched anyway)
I know the animation isn't the focus of the anime, but it is not funny, there is not a quality humor, the characters design is only ok... It's an average show from all points of view. There is no depth on it, there is no character development.
Anyway, this last episode was cool. Allowed us to think Sakamoto cried at the end.
Hmm tbh this is probably one of the worst comedy animes I've finished so far. Besides the main character, every single one were super stupid and boring and everything felt super soulless the first 10 episodes or so. It didn't help either that I watched "The Disastrous Life of Saiki" before jumping right into it, it had a similar structur but it was at least 10 times better. Overall 5.5/10.
Felt pretty bad for Acchan but fortunately, he realised his mistake and made up with Sakamoto. Sakamoto was a chad for taking those hits without even flinching.
I didn't like the Fukase conclusion. I really wanted to see an all-out brawl between Fukase and Hayabusa. I'm still confident that Hayabusa is on par if not stronger than Fukase and never retaliates because Fukase was his senior.
The pie throwing not working for the other students was expected. Sakamoto's too fast for them lol.
Now as for the ending, a lot of people have pointed out 2 major theories that are way different from what we initially perceived.
THEORY 1: There's a pretty depressing but shockingly feasible theory floating around the community stating that Sakamoto is terminally ill. All those over-the-top actions Sakamoto performs are him discreetly relaying messages to people around him that they should live their lives to the fullest. In the end, Sakamoto says he's leaving for NASA but Hayabusa calls him out on it and knows that it's a lie and Sakamoto doesn't deny it. The NASA story seems to be a cover-up that Sakamoto will eventually pass away and he doesn't want his fellow classmates to be sad over it. He also cares deeply about that injured sparrow because he himself isn't in the best condition. Also, the song he played in the karaoke is some kinda song about a dying child. Also, a 1st year isn't usually ever given a chance to give the farewell speech but Sakamoto must have specially requested since he won't be alive till the 3rd year to deliver a speech. He could easily get a girlfriend but never gets one and keeps avoiding them in over-the-top ways which is because he doesn't want them to be sad after he passes away. That's why he tries to make them realise the best in themselves. Also, it won't make much sense for the space centre to take him in before he completes his education. He only had 2 more school years left so the space centre could have waited as it's better if someone completed their basic education before doing something so prestigious. To further reinforce this Sakamoto says that his only regret is that doesn't know the no. of holes in the ceiling of the nurse's office meaning he spent too much time in the nurse's office because he was sick often. Finally, he shows a sad emotion when he leaves the campus. Also, when he's coming out of the school gates, he covered his face with pie so that he could hide his tears. The final manga volume's cover shows Sakamoto in some sort of coffin pointing towards the fact that he's going to die soon. I really thought this was sad but when you think about it, it makes so much sense.
THEORY 2: This is a goofy story but it says that Sakamoto is an alien and he came to earth to mingle around with humans and gather data. That's why he's so efficient in so many things that it's illogical at times. Like flying in the storm, being able to communicate with the sparrows, and being exceptional at any kind of physical activity. So him leaving the school is him leaving for his home planet as he's collected enough human data in one year. He does seem to have grown attached to humans a bit. Another branch of this theory is that he's a cyborg/ai-robot made by the US who are experimenting and trying to create human clones and sent Sakamoto to Japan as a prototype to see how well he can function among actual humans. Not to mention we all know how little emotions Sakamoto actually shows and the one time he does that is when he's leaving school. He must have picked up on that emotion after spending so much time with his classmates. After 1 yr of data gathering, the US scientists want him back and thus, he's returning to base.
So yeah, two wild theories that surprisingly seem plausible. Anyway, okayish show overall. Some gags were pretty unique, and some were pretty repetitive and boring. 5/10 for me.
◑ ━━━━━ ▣ ━━━━━ ◐
"Everything I've witnessed... This whole system you have built has always rejected me. Now I'm ready to reject it. That's why I destroy. That's why I took this power for myself. Simple enough, yeah? I don't care if you don't understand... That's what makes us... Heroes and Villains."
Really weak ending, episode 11 was the low point and 12 really didn't improve upon that. It's a shame because I really liked the anime but those last two
episodes made me drop my rating to a 7/10.
What a final episode man, I wasn’t sure how this could have a proper ending but I loved what we got here with Sakamoto giving his speech as he simultaneously avoided Acchan’s assault and at the same time brought him back down to earth after taking quite the beating himself, as well as finally dealing with that asshole Fukase who acted all cool but really he was just someone afraid of life, but perhaps he’s a cool surfer bro now like it was implied lol. And lastly there was the farewell scene, I’m not sure why Sakamoto needed to leave the school but I highly doubt the America thing is true lol, I see there’s a dark theory that exists but I choose to not believe that, I think Sakamoto is going to bring his greatness to another school and change another class of students’ lives for the better, that’s what I think.
That being said, that moment where Sakamoto looked emotional as he walked away really hurt, no matter what the reason is for him leaving that was a really good moment, and of course you had the pies on everyone’s faces to hide the crying which was a good touch as well, even Sakamoto needed a pie lol. But with that, I’m done with my first anime of 2024, and I’m ngl I think I just finished the best show I’ll watch this year lol, this absolutely deserves the 10/10 from me, I loved it from beginning to end, the comedy never got stale and always had me laughing and I was also just constantly amazed by everything Sakamoto did, you could never predict his next move.
And not only that, you also had the wholesome moments as well as the way Sakamoto helped a lot of folks change for the better, I think that’s a big part of why I loved this so much other than the usual Sakamoto greatness. And I can’t not mention the monster of a banger that the OP was, it went so hard for a show that probably didn’t need it but it fit so well anyway, and you had the more chill ED to go with it which I really loved as well. And while I still have the OVA episode to watch, this is the official goodbye to Sakamoto, a show and character I’ll never forget. And RIP to the mangaka who died very recently, she made something truly special here and I plan to watch another show that adapted her manga that came out this last fall season at some point too.
Wholesome ending to an absolutely hilarious show. Seeing Sakamoto's face at the end finally showing a bit of emotion just hit me different man. But this is one of the only comedy anime that I've been able to get through so far because I find it's randomness so funny. Props to the writer she did an amazing job and the studio adapted it really well. Obv to Sakamoto's VA as well. W show
