pretty fun episode. I just really want a Diana centered episode.

Me too, that is the one negative about this episode, they teased it but when in a different direction.

That being said we did learn a little bit about her past, all of the kids in the summer resort thought she was weird, poor Diana I feel sympathy for her, though at the same time I am a bit disappointed in her in she lets those two jerks Hannah and Barbara just pick on poor Akko and does nothing, she should know better.

Great episode. I hate to see Akko still struggling with magic, but I'm glad that the Polaris showed her Chariot's past and how she too struggled. But she improved by working hard and studying; hopefully Akko will do the same.

The lack of Sucy we've got lately is disturbing.

We know now that Akko knew that she couldn't do shit yet. She needs to work hard for it.

Andrew is dope, i really like his appearance.

He mentioned something about Diana being occupied with some certain magic. It might be that they thought Diana was weird because she was obsessed with Chariot back then? Maybe that's why she stopped liking Chariot? In the first film and first ep we saw little Diana in the public of Chariot's show.

It could explain a lot. That the response Diana got about being interested in Chariot's magic was so bad that she dove right into the closet in terms of being a fan. Or she actually stopped being a fan because of that.

Either way it seemed like a young version of her was in that audience with Akko and the timeline would match up pretty well.

Getting tidbits about Diana's past and character.

This my favorite ep so far. I didn't think the Ursula/Chariot reveal was that big of a surprise, but the earlier eps might have fooled the little ones watching, or maybe not.

So far Trigger has really kept things exciting in this series, and the pursuit by Arco (was that its name?) was an outstanding action sequence.

The final scene where Akko breaks down a little and admits she not ready for the powerful magic was truly touching.. Also beautiful animation when Akko peers into the fountain and sees Chariot's past.

A few things...

Stark700, no need for the "no spoilers from the manga" warning for obvious reasons.

Why do Akko and this rich kid remind me of Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask even though I never watched Sailor Moon?

Unfortunately for me, I want this series to do well, but I'm just not feeling that magic. There's something lacking from the OVAs. I suppose adaptation from a short format to a long series format is the main reason. Despite this, I guess gonna have to finish this series before I can really make a real conclusion, of course. At the very least, I will say this world Trigger created is gorgeous.

Also unfortunately, why does Akko have to be such a whiny brat? Like holy crap. I'm hoping she goes through some much needed character development.

Also, love how they sorta hint that the blue haired teacher, Ursula, is Chariot with the hair color switch. I suppose this was hinted at more subtlely in the cover pic. Suprised they hinted at this THIS EARLY in the series.

EDIT:
Must be stupid. People figured out Ursula's identity way before. I guess I was sorta thinking it from the OVAs too, but never certain. Also, unfortunately, another criticism...

Luna Nova has the access to all the magic in the world... and what do they entertain the modern businessmen with?? Freakin' weird cultural dances. >.<
I'm sorry if this was supposed to be a reference to something, but still... why??

I enjoyed this episode so much, honestly loving this anime.
It was a great & very funny episode xD Akko almost ruined everything ahaha
Andrew probably found out a few new things that he probably wasn't expecting...and it will probably change his father's company in the future ;) He is a pretty nice guy.
Akko is still very young but i think she learned a few new things today, one of them being that Chariot wasn't always the best witch in the world, she also started like Akko and became what she is today thanks to hardworking, maybe she realized that Chariot was just like Akko ;)

And it seems that Chariot is closer than Akko thinks ;)

Probably the best moment of the episode.

Really funny and poignant episode, in some ways. The narrative focuses his interest on magic, with a capital M and what agrees. The plot is unexpectedly steps forward involving what I did not expect, very good.
It will agree that now the identity of Ursula is certain.

Man... this is my personal opinion but I think Akko is annoying AF.
The pacing is god damn slow and I'm bored.

I'll still give this a chance because the animation is amazing. On the other hand I want some progress. I wasn't expecting an episodic anime. This is what we got until now.
I know that they need to build a backstory and stuff but we're already on episode 6 and NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENED!

Loved this episode. Really liked how Akko wasn't getting all depressed on how she's missing out on the party. She was actually trying to get that spell right the whole time. Even her going to find the fountain or whatever was related to her trying to improve and not just her slacking off or messing around. Akko knew that there is no shortcut to becoming good and she has to work hard, but she was so fixated on becoming the next Chariot that she wanted to become the best in a day. But after seeing that even Chariot had to work hard and that she wasn't super talented like Diana and that she also had her fair share of spells going wrong, we will now see a change in attitude from Akko as she'll try to get better the usual way and not get so hasty. Really loved the animation on that Akko crying scene.

They should've gone on hinting Chariot's past and school life subtly and gradually like in the broom race episode instead of lazily doing a magical powerpoint presentation of her past.

Started wondering how long she was gonna have the rabbit ears and nose, though that wasn't a bad thing, it was good, she looked cute like that, and they played an important part in the plot of this episode. Also Akko managed to charge through a large wooden door by herself, and that is pretty impressive.

Poor little Akko. Interesting episode though. I thought maybe she was about to Deus Ex Machina her way into not being terrible. But no however it did advance the plot I'd say significantly. I liked the new guy Andrew he had a good back and forth with Akko, and their respective donkey and rabbit transformations were really cute and funny. I also liked that they did something with Professor Ursula. She's the only one who doesn't completely write off Akko. So it seems like she should have done more in the series by now, than get ditched and ignored. Her big moment with Akko at the end was really sweet though. No one else did much this time. But I get they had to introduce a new character. And that polar bear was pretty cool.

1. Akko looked adorable.
2. That animation was top.
3. That music was top.
4. According Chariot: Is that still hinting or does this count as reveal already? I mean, you can't get MORE obvious than that.
5. First episode I thought was really great.

Decent episode. Animation sometime reminded me of classic cartoons like Tom and Jerry with its wackiness and direction and was really nice to look at. Also Akko looked amazing as a bunny, too bad we probably won't see her again like this. Though one thing really bothers me: why does she still suck so hard at magic, and why all the class laughing at her seems to barely affect her. Most normal people would be really hurt by it but she just is angry for a moment and then seems to forget it even happened. Weak writing.

This episode was my favourite so far! It had plot and character development, introduced a new character (love interest maybe? Although he seems a few years too old), tugged at the heartstrings, and had some really enchanting scenes.

I was worried (and still sorta am) the show will be largely plotless. I hope this was a step in the right direction!

Okay, so this episode reminded me why I wanted to watch this show so bad. It really gave the feels of the first OVA again. And man, I've missed it.
Andrew was such a good character. I wish he was a... What's the word? I wish he would appear way more often. Akko was also nice this episode. The whole episode felt great. And I almost teared up when the memories of Chariot showed up.
Let's hope the anime continue like this and not like episode 5 was.

Despite your "kindness" it seems you missed the introduction of a villain and a major turning point for Akko's character. We learned why she had thought she was hot shit, and for her to admit her failings the way she did was a fundamental change to her, something we never even saw in the OVAs.

There's still a lot more we don't know about Chariot. All those flashbacks revealed to us was that she also struggled at Akko's age. The biggest question about Chariot is why she gave up on being Chariot. There's obviously more to Chariot than just what that vision showed us, since a lot happened between then, her show that Akko was at, and her being a teacher now.

Why is Akko's development so bad? We get that she's not as skilled as others, but my god it's always something going wrong for her. Can we get an episode where she does something right? Not just out of dumb luck either, something that takes skill.

Looks like I was somewhat right about my predications of Lord Andrew. Granted he isn't a butler but the hier and I thought he was older. I got the part about being connected to Diana and her family right.
I also guess Andrew is the reason the creators sunk the yuri Akko x Diana ship.
During the flashback, Chariot was using magic inside the town. Way more than we seen before and without the Shiny Rod's power that we learn came from the foutaine. Could there be a possible change in between? Like the town pushing out Luna Nova kind of similiar to the second movie.
A witch's hair going from Chariot's red to Ursula's blue and her not only returning the Shiny Rod, but also speaks about the foutaine like she had personal experiece. This plus all the other information like them sharing eye colour can only mean one thing, Shiny Chariot and Ursula-sensei are twin sisters.

There was never anything sexual about LWA (except maybe that OVA joke "So you prefer them younger?").
The anime fans are seeing and shipping yuri (and yaoi) stuff left and right with or without reason.

Way more than we seen before and without the Shiny Rod's power that we learn came from the fountain.

I don't get your full thought but Shiny Rod and the magic crystal are acting like batteries for magic.
Maybe Chariot used some pocket version or the crystal was more powerful and reached the town then (had more magic stored in it).
Remember the cursed broom from episode 3? It was active far away from any magic sources, I guess that any great magic item has magic harnessing and storing abilities.

twin sisters

Now that explains everything...except the comment Ursula made about the picture of Chariot wining the race.

I didn't think about batteries. That raises another question, why aren't more people using them. If it is only for experienced witch then why is early/novice Chariot using them.
My full thoughts were pretty much I thought Luna Nova and the town having a better relationship in the past with magic being allowed/more accepted in town. It looks like the TV town doesn't hate witches (with Lotte's book event two episodes ago) unlike the second movie.

Very solid ep! Not a fave from an animation standpoint but still an interesting and fairly important one lore-wise. Glad to see a bit of Chariot's history through the fountain's powers, and I liked how they kept the bunny ears gag going for practically the whole ep. Good stuff.

why aren't more people using them

They need two things - magic item which can be used by non magic person and charged magic battery.
Maybe those are expensive/hard to make for public use and business purposes.
Also maybe the magic society is too backward and too closed for the thought that those can be mass produced.
Something like the opposite of what happened in Legend Of Korra - magic applied to every aspect of the everyday life.

The young Chariot is very good at magic totally unlike Akko. She only needs a battery to practice it away from magic sources (maybe some magic wands have one).

better relationship in the past

Yes, got that but I am trying to find another explanation - like that the back then world's magic was more powerful or maybe there was a magic source in the town but it got sealed after some [giant] incident.

the TV town doesn't hate witches

Actually the OVA town didn't hate them very much. It's about silly tradition/prejudice (maybe based on historical event where the witches messed up really bad) plus some rude kids. Outside the parade the students of LWA had no problem walking in shops and socialize with the locals.
It was time to change traditions and teach some manners.

I think we will see elements of this prejudice represented in the TV. It's good idea for conflict and good obstacle for our protagonists to overcome.
Also there is tendency some bits and pieces from the OVAs to appear here in new from or in different situations - like Ursula's hair color, Diana saving Akko from falling ect.

In my opinion Akko is in self-delusion since the beginning. She is convinced she is a kind of chosen one with incredible magic power hidden in her. Many times in the previous episodes she believes she will use magic in an incredible fashion, win the race easily, save the school easily, she is definitely an attention seeker, she boasts many times about her abilities, she is totally overestimating herself and does indeed quickly and "naturally" dismiss others opinions, all that just because it worked out few times with chariot's wand and because she has an ego tenfold the size of Diana's, just ... without the abilities.

In that regard I think the writing is consistent because she is like that since the beginning.

It was a despicable but useful (she doesn't get hurt) aspect of her very strong personality, something you find generally in antagonists. But with this episode she might have received the needed "wake-up call" and maybe gained a bit of humility. So maybe it was the first step for her character growth. We'll see in episode 7 how she behaves.
