REPENT NOW is used with permission from Spencer Young. Learn more at spenceryoung.c....
Ben is painting one day along a street in London one day when he sees a mentally-disturbed man by the canal throwing a suitcase into the water. Strangely intrigued, Ben's curiosity gets the better of him and he fishes the bag out of the oily water.
When he opens the bag, he discovers a small notebook of names, as well as a 15-foot-long snake inside. He discovers it is an African Rock Python, but animal services is unable to remove it right away. He attempts to rid himself of the snake, but it becomes clear that the animal has developed an attachment to Ben and isn't going anywhere.
Ben becomes used to the snake's presence, just as strange things begin happening in his apartment building: a neighbor's dog goes missing, and other residents he shares his building (and more than a few conflicts with) disappear as well. Soon Ben realizes that the snake is much more than it seems, becoming a strange extension of his thoughts and will -- and wants to guide him into a darker world than he ever anticipated.
Writer-director Spencer Young's short horror film is a smart, gripping story about the will to power, the inner dark impulses we all struggling with, and the efforts we make to keep them from coming to surface.
Well-crafted from its cinematography to its eerie sound design, it painstakingly constructs a world, while its writing deftly lays down the elements of its central dilemma and mystery.
Both gritty and atmospheric, it excels in depicting a milieu of both decaying modernity and the ancient evil lurking underneath the cracked, degraded surfaces. The short has the desaturated, almost bleak look of a British urban thriller, portraying city spaces as either open and desolate or cramped, almost moist with intimacy and proximity -- and ready to ripen with contagion.
The contagion here is not an epidemic, but rather a set of questionable disappearances, and the crowded apartment building with its long narrow hallways, cramped stairs and odd assortment of strange neighbors is an ideal playground for its latest reptilian inhabitant to wreak havoc. Actor Liam Boyle (from SKINS), in a deft, sensitive performance of a loner in a city filled with many solitary souls, becomes the conduit through which the audience learns more about the snake -- and about humankind's capacity of evil and capability of corruption. By the time Ben catches up to the snake and understands his own relationship to it, the audience may wonder if he's beginning to enjoy its power as well.
Narratively REPENT NOW feels like the first part of a longer feature work, especially with its almost cliffhanger-style ending. It doesn't have the time to delve deep into its mythos of good or evil -- or answers questions of where the snake came from or how it got its unique powers -- but the storytelling carefully but surely builds its tension, pulling viewers in with excellent craft. By the end, we may be left wanting more, but its eeriness and evocation of evil in the modern world will linger -- and we may never quite look at a snake in the same way again.
Albert’s got a heart of gold. Just doesn’t like nasty people.
Like so many animals!
idk if ruffles deserved that just for being annoying though
If it were a venomous snake, the story would lose its subtlety and aura of mystery. He couldn’t be affectionate with the snake, which was a key point of the relationship.
When Death Note came across with an Anaconda but actually is a python++
Called Albert 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So Albert is a hitman and he kills bad people
Technically Albert isn’t that bad of a snake
Yes,it looks like a Ball Python to me

So he just brought home a locked suitcase with no idea what is inside!!!???
Yea, what if there was mutilated corpse there 😂
That guy is slow lol 😏
But people literally make hundreds to even thousands of dollars selling stuff like that on the dark web. You see some one suspiciously throw away a garbage bag or etc, and it sells for hella online. It’s almost free money to sell potential trash now.

Best snake pet in the world. I would gladly keep that snake to rid the world of pest.
Everybody gangsta till you see your own name on the notebook
I have a pet just like it.
Very nicely conceived and executed. This short film draws on the folkloric, age old connection between natural creatures, and man’s inner potential for corruption, or evil. The film could be re-worked to a feature length work; however it could lose its perfect timing and symmetry in the process.

Albert here brought back awesome memories that I had more then a decade ago when I had the exact same snake, it was a female, named Kisses. I know odd name for a snake but she was the most docile, loving reptile I've ever lived with to date! Ya don't think of snakes being cuddly or good natured but I loved her. I had gotten pregnant n married and she had out grown her tararium so I had to give her up, but fortunately for her I found an unbelievable python owner n he was fully educated on all species of reptiles, specifically pythons. Moma misses you Kisses 🙏😢😩
I had a big green iguana called Iggy, and a smaller one. Big Iggy started to beat up Little Iggy so we rehomed him with an enlightened school that had a really good reptile department.
People may think that Snakes are " non-compassionate" Reptiles, but They Aren't. They definitely enjoy friendships and can sense when Someone is not a good person. A good Buddy of mine had a beautiful three-and-a-half-foot long Ball Python. Such a docile Snake too. He'd have this silly habit of gently coiling around my neck and then sticking His head down into my shirt pocket. I loved that Snake as much as any Cat or Dog and felt really sad when my Buddy told me that He found that poor Snake had died sometime during the day whilst He was working. Poor Snake dying all alone like that.🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺😢😢My Poor Buddy was pretty torn about it too.
That’s a really pretty snake!
yes it is it's actually a python and like M-R-T says their not venomous
Love that snake
@@carolyndawn7513 but they can suffocate or choke you

They were searching for their son and then they saw the snake which had a big lump on his back!................ sooooooo yeah.......

He could have left a voicemail leaving his address and all of that. He could have also taken the snake to a zoo or the police department. I mean in the United States the cops aren't going to do anything with that snake but you could leave it in a chest in front of their place. They can't stop you from that.
I have a friend who often has very big snakes like this and I remember very early on when she first started getting large snakes one of them disappeared. We had no idea how that thing got out how it could have disappeared and we're at gone too. Two years later she's moving out of that location and as we're removing blinds and everything from the walls to repaint everything we end up finding it! We had no idea how it had survived had even stayed in the house and how it had gone undetected. Or even what it had been eating.
Wait, what, how?

OK but that is one of the least threatening snakes I've ever seen? When I saw it I was just like "awww cute a constrictor." it's the venomous ones you should be alarmed about, constrictors are very docile. Just don't let them wrap too tight. Mostly they'll be after your body heat.
If it were a venomous snake, the story would lose its subtlety and aura of mystery. He couldn’t be affectionate with the snake, which was a key point of the relationship.
A “mysterious creature”
It’s a snake buddy, just a 10 foot long snake
17:44 yea just a snake
Sure but he's kinda mysterious because he goes around and kills bad people and there is this magic notebook that keeps track.
Epic. This needs to be the first episode of a series. There's so much I want to know!
When Nathan slapped him all on a sudden, it almost caused me heart Attack. dammmm
Slapped!? No, that wasn't a slap. A slap would of left a red mark on his face instead of a bloody nose. That dude straight sucker punched him.

the snake in my mind dosen't need to eat. In what you call feeding it. The snake repesents a demon/death
he is a guy for his whole life been builed and down right used beacuse of this he has sercltly been hiding a lot of hate . the creature attaches to him beacuse of this and acts on his hate . sorry for spelling
Snakes don’t need to eat for a whole week and they can even go a year without eating

It’s basically the anime death note.
I know the boyfriend is supposed to be the bad guy but his Tom Hardy character is spot on and I think that makes him my favorite in all of this. Well done over all!

I wouldn’t really call this a horror short film, but ok
Ethan W its more like a comedy
agree
Well it's not scary because the threat isn't after someone we should care about. Instead Albert was after someone we were rooting to die lol.
If the snake ate the dog...there should be a lump right smack in the middle of the snake!! Jus' sayin'...😋
in my mind its a demon/ death

It's well cared for and handled with love.
Unless you don’t feed it.

I was impressed as hell at a whole shed in one piece for that one scene.
There are three types of people, the "Danger-Noodle-Squad", the "EAT-THEM-ALL-ALBERT!" folks and then there is the "omg-this-is-so-not-realistic" crew 😂😂😂😂

Sooo... Death Note, but with a banana Danger Noodle.
one man’s trash is another man’s treasure
Damn, the suspense in this film was done masterfully, absolutely brilliant and original.
Director is really interesting one to watch. Great vision
This is not a HORROR SHORT FILM THIS IS A GREAT SHORT FILM. I love watching this over and over again it's a great FILM. A snake killing bad people that are only going around cousin trouble that's not bad, that's a good thing. I grew up seeing bad people grow up only to get more and more worst, yet people like me see this criminals COMMIT crimes and just stand by and don't do nothing. So I guess that's y I like this short film I like seeing HATING/ RACIST EVIL criminals get what they deserve, IM NOT SAYING EVERY CRIMINAL IS BAD, SOME ARE CRIMINALS JUST KILLING BAD PEOPLE OR OTHER CRIMINALS THATS Y I SAY NOT ALL CRIMINALS ARE BAD. And then their are the true criminals that are GOOD AT BEING BAD AND HIDING THEIR CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES, THEIR SO GOOD AT KILLING AND COMMITING CRIMES, THEY GET AWAY WITH IT ALL AND CONTINUE TO GET WORST. SO YEA I LIKE THIS STORY. YET I DIDN'T GET Y IT SAID A SNAKE GUIDING A YOUNG MAN TRUE THE UNDERWORLD, ARE WE IN THE UNDER WORLD IS THIS HELL. IF SO THEN ITS NOT BAD HAVING A GUIDE TO HELP GET RID OF THE REAL BAD PEOPLE HELL MAYBE EVEN THE DEVIL CAN'T STAND OTHERS TRYING TO B MORE EVIL THEN EVIL IT SELF.
The beginning reaction to the snake reminds me of the many people I've helped overcome their fears of snakes. one special person in particular.
I really liked that
Sorry Nate dog, he tried to warn you but in the end, you got what you deserved
When your name starts being written in the book.
The actor playing Nathan is good. He gives me Tom Hardy vibes, like his role in Bronson.

Pfft this constrictor snake is not evil. I’m Australian and a surprisingly smaller one penetrated my obsessive snake-proofing and ate a rescued baby guinea pig I’d just finished rehabilitating, leaving his adult adopted brother traumatised (he has a pair of new rescued brothers now and the hutch is so snake proof a worm couldn’t get in)... humans are one thing but when you start killing my pets...

I wonder if the snake was actually killing, or if it was a metaphor and the guy was the one killing. I think it’s the latter.
Interesting!
Hes not going mad if the snake is real I guess
That’s deep
Obviously metaphorical. Yay, someone with half a brain! Reading comments, I realize it hasn't crossed most ppl's minds. Those are the kinda things that make me understand why Trump's POTUS. America's lack of critical thought & closed minds, esp here in rural Alabama.
Very, very interesting point of view. They could make a series out of this "pilot" which would answer some of the burning questions here.

Video game logic for sure just press X to reel in suitcase
Just goes to show you that you don't have to have blood & guts to make a good horror type movie.
Ben has brought a terrible curse into his life. He can never form a connection to anyone again. He can never love again. He can't be with Kate. At the first quarrel, that Demon (it isn't really a snake of course) will kill her. I suspect that the only way to get free of Albert is for someone else to willingly take it, like Ben did. The cost of passing "Albert" on to another person is knowing that you've unleashed hell on another person to get free of the hell that you're in.
If you were a living a life of utter hell and isolation and the only way out was to swap someone into your place so you could go free and live life again with everything beautiful that life has to offer, knowing that this other person will be condemned to hell as you were, would you make the swap? Would you impose hell on another so you could live life once again? And if you made the swap, would your conscience be able to tolerate your choice?
