Hi Furl, thanks for your secret santa gift! I used to have way too long of a PTW list and had cleared out 100+ titles that were gathering dust, one of them being Patlabor: the Movie, so you gave me the push to finally watch it. I must confess, it wasn't my cup of tea. Nevertheless, I'm glad I gave it a chance. I kind of feel bad giving you this response but I wanted to say thanks regardless.

I mean looking at what you rated it, it's only 1 point less (a 7, compared to my 8). To be honest, I write these reviews for myself, and I had to revisit the review to even know what you're talking about lol. I use it more of a mind-jogger to remind me about certain series when people mention them. I'm impressed you didn't bring up some of our differing scores (like Blue Period or Quintuplets). I like Blue Period. But like, it kinda goes nowhere lol.

It's incredibly disrespectful to call a studio lazy. There's so many reasons as to why certain decisions are made in regards to any production, sometimes it's time, sometimes it's money, a lot of the time it's both. Animators love to bring their creations to life, they live for that sort of stuff. No animator in history wants to be lazy, they simply just do not have the time and money to bring out their A-game for every single thing.

J.C.Staff isn't always known for its amazing animation, but they are far from untalented. Do you really think people release an anime out of laziness? Do you know how much time and effort goes into voice acting, sound cues and music? All of these things are top tier in this anime. If the anime was all around lackluster I could agree with you, but it's really only the animation itself that's missing.

Really, if anything your attitude toward this is a good example of what I'm talking about. Not trying to offend, mind you, but I do think a lot of people like you have a tendency to judge things without any real grounds to do so. Yes, of course, the story was written for them. But they still had to do several other things in order to make this a reality. And on the topic of manga dubs, some of those dubs are actually master pieces by themselves, the famous "Ghost Stories" is absolutely hilarious even though it's really nothing more than a "lazy dub". Proper timing and delivery of lines is important, personality matters.

I don't think that good animation cannot elevate an already good story to incredible levels, I just feel like people need to understand that you can appreciate something better if you don't hold it to unreasonable standards. I don't think Gokushufudou would've really benefitted from better animation, frankly. It would've been eye candy, it would've been nice to see, but a lot of the jokes and comedy found within the story are very low key and subtle. Other comedy shows such as Nichijou have much higher energy levels and actively benefit from a large animation budget, but not every story needs to have good animation to get its point across.

And the seasonals seem interesting such as Tokyo Revengers ,Vivy , Burning Kabaddi etc.
