Storytelling (and art in general) is a form of communication which thrives in the abstract. As how language establishes it's terms through speakers agreeing to use certain words to convey certain meanings to create a system by which we can understand each other, stories do much the same; characterisation, worldbuilding, etc. All of these pieces of information being established is a story 'defining its terms' so to speak. It is then with the interplay of these 'terms' and what they represent or otherwise depict that a story communicates.
With that in mind, it is of utmost importance that a story maintains internal consistency of its constituent elements in order to effectively be able to communicate in the first place. In other words, making sense is the bedrock of effective storytelling.
But of course making sense doesn't mean anything without putting that coherency towards something. People only speak to be understood, after all. The depths and complexity of the nuances of a story or otherwise how effectively it puts the medium of abstractions of storytelling to use is where the merit lies.
Now in regards to scores. Consider a chair in a room. If I were to record this for a film's runtime with nothing else going on; there would be nothing really to praise about it, but nothing really to criticise about it either. It is totally meritless, but also totally flawless. I wouldn't consider this great storytelling.
Back on the point of actually seeking to communicate something; simply not having any breaks in the consistency of what a work is getting across doesn't mean anything if there's nothing being said in the first place. In cases like this where there's nothing problematic but nothing impressive going on, a 5/10 will suffice.
On the extreme ends of the spectrum; a 1/0 would be reserved for works which are ubiquitous in flaws; that they are so fundamentally broken and incoherent that anything it strives towards buckles under the pressure of its inability to formulate a coherent thought. In the same vein; a 10/10 would be something which exhibits utterly flawless communication while squeezing as much depth as it is able from its constituent elements; a work which plays with a consistently high number of variables and sticks the landing every time is what is most impressive to me in regards to an artist's ability to communicate through their work. The rest of the scale between 1, 5, and 10 are simply varying degrees of competence and incompetence.
Note that while I've above outlined a pretty rigorous system of critique I apply to all stories in scoring them, my favourites lists are all simply my personal preferences. They are not necessarily reflective of what I think are objectively the best written things out there.
