I don't know how good I'll be at giving recommendations but if you want harems with blatantly unlikable protagonists, I see School Days isn't on your list. I feel like even most people who haven't watched it probably have some idea of what happens in it but in case you don't I will warn you that you might not want to watch it blind if there's anything you're squeamish about(I won't spoil exactly what)
Personally I'd say Rent-A-Girlfriend is fine for what it is. It has it's problems, like painfully contrived plot points and a generally unlikeable protagonist, but those are kind of par for the course for trashy romcoms like it, so if you like shows like that it would probably be worth trying out the first episode or two atleast. If you don't like those kinds of shows, well, I don't really think it does much to elevate itself above the rest but what do I know
If you do watch it and find yourself particularly attached to Ruka, brace yourself.
(edit: apparently spoiler tags don't work in profile posts so I don't know if I should expand on this but I felt really bad for her over the last couple episodes)
And have fun with the Ghibli movies! I think whether you would like Rent-A-Girlfriend or not they would probably be a better use of your time than it lol
And sorry for not replying for a while, I don't check parts of the site often other than updating my own list
I’m starting school tomorrow actually, my senior year. Should go decently, but I’m still hoping the best will happen! How about you?
Thanks for the compliment bro. I see you are a big fan of Evangelion?
I've been meaning to both read and watch 2001: A Space Odyssey, I will let you know if I do.
I have not read ANY Japanese literature. Besides Light novels, lol. The Haruhi Suzumiya series is the most fun I have ever had reading a book series, so I really can't recommend them enough if you have an interest in light novels/2000's otaku culture. But as for real Japanese lit, I would like to read more, and get better at reading Japanese so I can do so.
I have quite a few favorite books! I've always been really into reading, even for school. In recent years I do not find myself picking up a book outside of required reading quite as much, but its still fun from time to time. My favorite books are likely the ones that have had the biggest impact on me, and a few come to mind. I was really into The Chocolate War in middle school, which is a controversial 70's novel about a cult in a private school that inflicts psychological damage on students with permission from the school itself. Its really dark and has a lot of themes of existentialism and conformity; its in the same vein as Lord of the Flies or Catcher in the Rye if you have heard of/like those. I like Steven King a lot too, he has written a lot of weird novellas and books that are often ridiculously long but really interesting/twisted. His 4 Seasons series kind of stuck with me when I read it. I also really enjoyed To Kill a Mockingbird, its a classic that's pounded over the head by most schools but I was a big fan when I read it a few years ago. If you haven't read it, its ultimately a story of a lawyer fighting against segregation in the south, with a really unexpected ending in my opinion. You have probably read it for school, and if not, I recommend it. Hope those aren't strange choices! What are your favorite books?
and heres the pen
I still have yet to check out Takahata's films (shamefully). I have been on a movie kick lately, I am trying to watch all my remaining Ghibli films on my PTW that I have not seen, and for some reason all of Takahata's exclusive movies happen to fall into that. I want to watch all the Ghiblis and rank them, plus they're just nice to watch every once in a while in general. In particular I can't believe I still have not watched Princess Mononoke or Grave of the Fireflies, those will be my next ones.
Not sure if Grave of the Fireflies will be as hard hitting for me as Barefoot Gen or as beautiful as Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni, but I am still intested to check it out. I really have to recommend both of those movies strongly, they both have emotional and powerful stories based on the bomb dropping in WWll.
Aria has been pretty good so far. Its very pleasant and laid back, the setting and design work is fantastic, and there are some decent emotional moments. The characters are all cute and have sweet moments with one another, though they are not the deepest or most interesting characters I have seen even in a slice of life. They all have their own little quirks, but so far I have yet to strongly feel invested in a plot line the show has introduced. Its all just very light and breezy, and something to throw on and enjoy once in a while. I have heard the last season is the strongest, as the characters mature and face bigger tasks. I am anticipating that because on a visual level, it is very strong, so I of course want the story to pull through too. I know a lot of that likely sounds negative but I don't intend it that way, I still think its a good show and I can recommend it to people of iyashikei for sure, even if its not as hard hitting and personally resonant to me as something similar like Hidamari Sketch or the manga Yotsuba (both of which are also pretty much about doing nothing).
I got into anime in middle school like most people did I think! I had seen multiple Ghibli films leading up to that point and LOVED them but obviously watched them dubbed and with little knowledge that they were actually Japanese. Then I watched Erased and Attack on Titan in 8th grade and thought they were cool, if flawed in areas. My real gateway shows were in my freshman year; Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, even Sailor Moon. I watched them in Japanese (except Bebop) and actually started to appreciate them for what they were and the culture behind it. 10th grade was when I got huge into anime though, I had been going through a funk and shows like Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star really cheered me up with their endearing characters and funny situations. I think those are both strong anime for inspiring further interest in the media since they play around with typical tropes while still being solid and entertaining stories on their own. From that point forward I began watching it regularly, and I haven’t really slowed down since then.
Not sure what you mean by problematic content, but I think I would likely say I am okay with it. I am pretty anti-censorship, I think anime is a form of art and should therefore be utilized as a platform for creators to express the content they envision. All too often I see people call all anime porn or whatever, or get mad about the plethora of young characters. To me I view that as lacking in issues, I like my anime creative and weird. People that call it problematic seem to just be scoping out reasons to dislike it or rag on it.
My favorite Evangelion characters are definitely Misato and Kaji. They are both very fleshed out and likable adult characters (a rarity in anime I would say), they’re one of my favorite ships in anime, I just really appreciate both of them both aesthetically and personality wise. Misato is really hard to dislike, she’s beautiful, a badass, I love her interactions with Shinji, I love her backstory, she’s just amazing. From the moment she speeds her car around the Angel infested city when retrieving Shinji in the first episode I knew she was special. And I have a really soft spot for Kaji. His design might be apart of it, since I have a thing for mellow guys with long hair, but I always end up loving the scenes he’s in. He’s just oddly content with the looming apocalypse and spends the show tending to his garden and hanging out around Nerv casually. His affections for Misato feel realistic and multifaceted to me as well, as well as him viewing Asuka as only a child and his rejection of her advances. He’s such a cool guy. Asuka is definitely my favorite pilot though, and a lot of my favorite Evangelion scenes involve her. Don’t think I need to rant about what makes her so special.
Yes, a big part of my Evangelion love is my relatability to it. It goes beyond that though, the trippiness of the later scenes and the concepts introduced were mostly what hooked me on it I think. Each character is explored with such strong depth in comparison to particularly every other anime, we see the characters both develop and learn the reasons behind why they act the ways they act. I love the aesthetic of Evangelion too, especially EoE, I have watched the Third Impact hundreds of times and it never gets old for me. All the insane religious, Freudian and sexual bullshit potraying a chaotic apocalypse ending is just memorizing to withhold. Even the parts with real images of the death threats Anno received never grow tiring for me, they feel integral to the film and express the reasons Anno went as far as he did. The design work of Evangelion is top notch, in both characters and mech, the music is obviously great, you get the gist. I guess if I just had to explain my appreciation for Eva in one word, I would just say its unique. It handles topics and ideas that seem more confronting than what I had seen in media before I had seen it, and some of the imagery is still etched into my brain. I do really need to rewatch it and write a full personal thesis on it though, I can’t believe its been a few years now.
A question for you if I may; its a little surprising you haven’t seen Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou yet. Its Anno’s director effort after Eva, and I find it to show just as much of Anno’s strengths as his former. All the big emotions, the striking imagery, the interesting directing, the multilayered characters. I can’t recommend it enough, I think you would really enjoy it. Its both a fun rom-com and a strong character drama. Best watched after finishing Eva.
Feel free to chat whenever! I enjoy using this forum as a means to discuss anime casually.
Don't think we have talked before. Nice to meet you.
