I periodically send friend invites to people who have similar taste in anime as me (I usually go through friend lists of my friends and use the shared anime feature to compare ratings of shows we both watched and I recently also started experimenting with MAL API). This way, when figuring out if I would enjoy a certain anime, I can simply hop into the 'stats' tab and check out how people with similar tastes rated it.
