I find it truly disingenuous not to agree on there being a lot of critical moments harbouring the potential for truly powerful yet dark introspective reflections, which the show just blatantly avoids following through in order to not deviate from its all-permeating colourful and optimistic vibe. I think it’s only natural to perceive it as quite unrealistic or insincere.
yet, that’s contradictory only if you go into it believing it to be - as the social anxiety warriors swear on it being - a faithful depiction of a socially inept individual’s struggle making their way through life - which I don’t think it is, or needs to be; it is much more a Bildungsroman of a girl learning to perceive and accept how the world truly is and who she can and wants to be, shedding her distorted trauma-ridden perception of everything and everybody. it’s very different from a girl accepting its debilitating handicap - which is what talentless, unpleasant people in real life often do conclude being their only option to preserve their mental sanity - yet that’s not a reality that would ever be fitting to a show like this.
indeed, i’m not saying what I made of it is exactly what the author wanted the show to be, maybe he indeed wanted it to be precisely the way the average “that’s literally me” fan interpreted it; what I mean is what prevented you from enjoying Bocchi might be the contradictions between the actual show and the expectations born from the collective interpretation that the die-hard fans seem bloodily set on imposing on everybody, which might have clouded a genuine, unfiltered, and maybe more (or even less?) pleasant and individual experience of it. good review, whichever the case.
(side note: about the comedy, doushiyoumonai, I found it quite engaging, albeit not notably ingenious. I do think however the comical timing doesn’t get transposed any satisfyingly in english, and I don’t think I’m gatekeeping here; it’s just most gags’ form is peculiar to the Japanese language, therefore they lose their “comical energy” (very unscientific term here), because of necessarily having solely their literal essence carried over in English, with the enriching nuances resulting obliterated. however, as a general rule I personally find most english translations lazy and unbearable, so that might just be me.)
"Speaking of that scene, it is just completely unintelligible and demonstrates the most annoying aspects of Bocchi's character. How would anyone perceive you as an attention whore? You have no friends anyways, nobody cares about you. The character writing is so bogus."
From this, I can only come to the conclusion that you've never struggled with irrational social anxiety before. One of the important parts of this show is how nice everyone is. We the viewer knows that Bocchi's fears are ridiculous, but that's how irrational fears work. They're emotionally charged. There are cases in the show itself where Bocchi is depicted as trying and failing to logic herself out of a panic spiral. By depicting a world where people are nice, but Bocchi still has these anxieties, it speaks (in its simplified way) to the real analogue of this. And the reason her mind leads her down that line of thought is that her starting an instagram page is outside of her status quo. A common line of thinking of many with social anxiety is the idea that one must not leave their established character or social circles (thus, the inability to break in to new social circles). Her mind's "justification" for this line of thought is "they'll think I'm a attention whore!" Therefore, The character moment makes sense and is internally consistent with Bocchi's level of anxiety (amped up for entertainment ofc)
Also I cannot disagree enough about the show being unfunny, but I'm not about to start acting like you're wrong for thinking that. Tho that one joke you bring up was an odd choice. Even without context of what a tsuchinoko is, it's pretty obvious that the joke is about her realizing that she has almost no records of her existence, much like a cryptid.
i dont know what people see in it aside from "she's literally me" and twitter gifs.
