"Born too late to explore the earth, born too early to explore the stars. Born just in time to drown in a flood of seasonal anime." - Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus 「 渚、見つけたよ。やっと見つけたんだ。俺にしか守れないもの」 Hi there, my name’s Ben o/ I've poured countless hours into my profile and I try to update it relatively often, so I hope you enjoy visiting it! I also started a blog that you can check out if you're interested. It's worth noting that any drop-down section on this page marked (archive) isn't being updated anymore. 日本語の言葉の響きや表記に夢中になって勉強しようと思って、言語習得という長い旅に出た。 大学では言語学と東アジア研究を専攻とした。 If you'd like to send me a friend request, please leave a note! My list is organized by score and priority, because MAL only has a whole number rating system: Medium priority = ~x.5 (ex. 8.5 for Tenki no Ko) Low priority = ~x.0 (ex. 8.0 for Kiznaiver) The overall score for each anime on my list is made up of two equally weighted scores on separate scales (experiential and contemplative) to balance my viewing experience with my contemplation after the fact. Aside from 1/10s and 10/10s, which naturally received equally low or high scores on each scale, the experiential and contemplative scores of the other anime on my list will be listed via tags. Each of my overall scores can be roughly described by this scale: 10 | All-time favourite I have a profound, lasting connection with the work that extends from my moment-to-moment viewing experience to my contemplation of its narrative elements and audiovisual production. 9 | Favourite The connection that I have with the work might not be quite as strong as is the case with one of my all-time favourites, but it certainly left an impression on me. 8 | Light favourite An anime that really stood out to me but didn’t quite manage to claim a spot at the top of my list. 7 | Solid anime An anime with a number of strengths that set it apart from the vast majority of the medium while falling short of leaving a lasting impression on me. 6 | Pretty good Enjoyable to watch and/or think about overall in spite of its unignorable shortcomings. 5 | Decent Right in the middle of the playing field; I’m most likely indifferent towards it as a whole. 4 | Subpar An anime that left a lot to be desired but didn’t fail hard enough to leave a bad impression on me. 3 | Bad Unenjoyable overall; an anime whose weaknesses noticeably outweigh its strengths. 2 | Exceptionally bad An anime with very few redeeming qualities that left a distinctly bad impression on me. 1 | Unspeakably horrible A special kind of horrible. Reserved for anime that I found truly insulting to watch and would rather not think about at all. - | Unrated If I'm unsure how to rate the work, as is often the case with short films and specials (not to mention anime with uncomfortable levels of fetishization), I tend to leave it unrated. I don't rate manga o/
My taste, my patience, and the way I rate anime have all changed quite a bit since I first encountered the medium, so I thought it would be a good idea to leave behind an archive of every anime that I’ve rated 10/10 at some point. Many anime on this list are no longer absolute favourites, but each title here holds a great deal of sentimental value to me as a result of my first-time viewing experience. The entries in this archive are ordered chronologically by the date I scored them a 10/10; the first entry from each year is denoted by the year in parentheses beside it.
Now, let us drink. Let us drink. Drink to the human race. In every age, there will be good humans and bad humans. Human life is too long to devote to reproduction, yet too short to devote to learning, in the helix of time. Perhaps that is why humans succumb to desire and seek release. Despite the fact that life is complete with the sun, the land, and poetry. - Hunter x Hunter (2011) | episode 135
