Greeting, netizens of MAL!!! 37 years old active anime/manga fan since 2006!!!

I'm a 37 years old active anime/manga fan since 2006. I've been a long time anime fan (even before I knew what anime was). I'm a big video gamer, and a big fan of science and history. I used to work at NIH as a student intern for 4 summers (2008-2011). I graduated with an AA in biotech (2012). I am also big fan of K-pop and K-dramas (been in the fandom since 2013).

So basically, you don't want to use simkl unless they paid for an advertisement from celebrities and/or an article to be written about them? Its not that kind of service. It caters to people who self-host things (Plex, JellyFin, Kodi) https://simkl.com/apps/.

If you don't want to use them, thats fine, but I personally like them. They are small enough where users can actually suggest things and get them implemented.

I have never used Letterboxd. I heard of this because its tracking API is linkable in multiple of the services I use. They are actually pretty decent. What kind of trust? Data or privacy?

If you really want to be sure your data doesn't go anywhere, you can use the super basic tracking of Google TV.

Uh, may I ask why???

also, https://kitsu.io/anime/scott-pilgrim-takes-off and https://kitsu.io/anime/the-lord-of-the-rings-the-war-of-the-rohirrim. kitsu has very little rules on what they will add.

Also, if you want to track non-anime, simkl is an option

I get what you mean. Personally, I don't watch much anime anymore, mostly just read manga. I really like mangaupdates, but it doesn't track anything relating to dates. MAL is the only one that tracks dates per chapter in a usable way. Kitsu is good, because it's queue is open, and they are quick to add things, but some of their data is wrong, and I don't like how they blurb their URLs instead of just using the ID. And anilist... well..

The following is a rant about AL
In fact, when I try to suggest improvements to their system, I am met with the staff being quite incapable of seeing another person's point of view. For example, I suggested the wording of a pinned message be adjusted, and they basically said "no it doesn't, you are wrong. It will never effect anything in any way. End of conversation". They say the queue buildup is because of lack of staff, so I suggest they get more, and make it known. They told me when they are looking there will be a banner on the site, but they are not looking right now. On top of that, their process for vetting candidates seems not to be great, so the data mods who work on the queue are the same ones vetting the candidates. I suggested a 'test' they could take might work better, and they said 'no that would never work'.
Similarly, when I suggested that one of the problems with the queue. AL's submission process is quite a lot more in depth than any of the other site's. This brings about the following problems:

  1. Since it isn't public, multiple users can spend a lot of time submitting the same item. Then mods have to waste time merging them, and users waste time submitting already queued items. This is made worse by long lead times.
  2. The submission page is buggy, and some items have no way to edit them without re-starting the process
  3. One user has to submit ALL the data. They want high-quality submissions, even though an approach of 'get into db, any user can add more details later' would probably be beneficial.

Yeah I like talking about anime with others, and accepting others opinions. I'm never mad for suggestions if the person thinks I would enjoy it. I actually found the Gundam Seed manga at a thrift store. So maybe reading some of it will get me to give it another shot.
DrBokChoy Jan 5, 11:01 AM
I'll tell you what, how about I help you increase your anime list, did you know Gundam SEED is on Netflix, do you have a Netflix subscription? You can watch the whole series on there, well that and it's sequel, Gundam SEED Destiny are also on Netflix too.

Yes, I have a Netflix subscription, and yes I know what Gundam shows are one there (with the others seemingly slip on Crunchyroll). However, Gundam Seed was one of the shows that turned me off from anime back in 2003-2004. As mentioned when the next wave of shows came in, I didn't like them. I didn't like the character or suit designs at all for Seed and have yet to attempt to get into it since.

Also Zeta Gundam is on Youtube, you need to turn on CC to have the English subtitle to show up, I'll embed 2 episodes below for you:

I watched a bit of this back in the day, but didn't have access to the rest. As mentioned previously, internet video was not what it is today. I do currently have the whole series on blu-ray and have it on my watch list.

I'm not sure if you may like this, this is an anime from 1988, you can watch it with fansub on Youtube, it's called Sonic Soldier Borgman:

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check it out once I've gotten through some of the stuff currently on my watch pile.

You can have multiple interests, and still watch anime and read manga. I became a K-pop fan in 2013 (as my profile have shown).

Yeah but I was like 13 so I just got into other things. I never disliked the anime I had discovered. I just didn't like the new crop of shows that had hit it big at the time. I was over stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh that was dominated anime talks with people I knew. I've always had multiple interests, anime was just, let's say, deprioritized.

Well, I'm glad your girlfriend got you back into anime. But as I said, you had a lot of missed opportunity in late 2000's to watch some well-known anime like Love Hina, Please Teacher!, Please Twins!, Negima!. All of these anime I listed are the one that got me deep in the fandom. Don't tell me you didn't watched Death Note or Cowboy Bebop when it was on Adult Swim. I mean how on earth did you missed all of that? Didn't nobody ever told you about anime that is not shown on Adult Swim when you left anime in 2004?

Even before her I was still watching the odd anime here or reading a manga. And no I have not yet watched Death Note, as mentioned, I was aware of wildly popular anime that were going on, I just never made it a priority to seek them out to watch.

Uh, did nobody ever introduced you to Crunchyroll (pre-Sony acquisition era) back in late 2000's? Did you not know about Gundam 00 was shown on Sci-Fi Channel (now SyFy) in 2008?

Yes, I was aware of Chruncyroll. However, at the time you speak of, I saw no reason to get it, as I already owned all anime that I liked at the time. I knew of Gundam 00, but no, I did not know what channel it aired on. This was mostly because I was not looking to watch it.

I mean what happened, did nobody told you about anime gaining big ground in the US in late 2000's with these titles I just mentioned above?

As mentioned before, I was there for when things started to take off in the west around 1999-2000 and then dropped off. Nobody in my friend group was likey into the shows listed above, so nobody came to me clamoring that I should watch "Love Hina".

Hi

Why do your responses sound like ChatGPT, then? Suspicious.
DrBokChoy Jan 2, 5:41 PM
I dropped out from anime around 2004, as noted in my bio, around the time Yu-gi-oh and Naruto were taking off in the west. I kind of just didn't get into the next wave of shows as my interests changed. Once Dragon Ball Z had reached the end, I was kind of done. I knew of some shows that were big but just had other interests. My girlfriend showed me a couple shows she liked and it got me back into it. So now I'm catching up on some that I wanted to watch bad then but never had access to, as internet video was in its infancy and watching some newer stuff as well. A lot of it has been garbage as I'll watch whatever is free on platforms like Tubi while I'm working sometimes.

So in short, was into it, got out of it, never knew this website existed until she told my about it last year.

Are you just copy pasting ChatGPT reponses?

Do you have ADHD? Are you on the autism spectrum?

Nope.

you give good anime even with good storyline a bad or low rating

Just because other people like it I need to like it, too? What kind of logic is that.

I was referring to your double standard on how you view what is anime

Ah,.. the one you were making up.
TransferUser Jan 1, 12:15 PM
You shouldn't take ratings this seriously.

By the way, MAL only has a fraction of my anime list and I've seen that 1994 Street Fighter II anime about a dozen years ago. I don't condone cutting up anime, but to be fair not even the fighting scenes in that anime were entertaining. Not that any of the later Street Fighter II anime were any better, though. Street Fighter Zero on the other hand was at least decent.

The talking parts aren't necessarily the boring parts in an anime. Anything in an anime can be either entertaining or boring. Take Kill La Kill for example. I don't think there were any lingering scenes in that nonstop action anime. I still found it incredibly boring. Conversely, I don't think Mushishi had any action, yet I found it to be entertaining.

How on earth can you be an anime fan if you can't handle the boring part?

My free time is too precious to waste it on anime that do not entertain me.

Also, it's kinda hilarious to get lectured to be a bad anime fan by someone not even bothering to use the Japanese titles.

You really really frustrate me with your double standard.

I fail to see what you mean. If an anime is entertaining I rate it highly. When it is boring I rate it lowly. That's all there is to it.
TransferUser Jan 1, 3:21 AM
For me "dropping" means that I fast forward through the boring parts, so I usually get to the end of any anime I drop.
Everyone's taste in anime are different and comparison is the thief of joy.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
