Kyousougiga was really good (and it's short. Matsumoto is a promising new director. I see you didn't like the ONA but, that plops you right in the middle and it's nonsense).
Shirobako is good so far (an anime about the anime industry and art in general [the making of which is always tough, thankless, and ruthless, but worth doing anyways])
Mirai Mizue is a good fella to take note of. He creates abstract animations according to a selected musical piece (check out last year's Wonder, his short using music from Pascals!)
Speaking of independent animation, there's been tons of great stuff from that sector (Kubo Yutaro has been releasing great stuff! Airy Me is great! Midori-ko is light in terms of plot, but its animation is astounding!)
You haven't watched Takahata's Kaguyahime, yet? If you're a fan of him, this comes highly recommended.
You're not the biggest KyoAni fan, right? Then their recent stuff (Euphonium, Tamako Love Story, Hyouka [supposedly]) may not be up your alley, but I liked them.
Since you like Mononoke, I'd recommend Nakamura's Kuuchuu Buranko!
Are you watching the Animator's Expo shorts? There's some real goodies in there (20min... is by far my favorite)
I'm sure there's more out there, I haven't been keeping that up-to-date myself.
btw, what brought on the anime-watching? iirc you've only got back into anime earlier this year, right? Interested in any shows you missed out on during the past few years?
Oh, right. I deleted all my ratings except for 8 and above + I also uprated a bunch of stuff. I was thinking about keeping only my 10 ratings, but I want to give props to all the stuff I greatly enjoy (which is, really, the only stuff that I care about rating)
Yeah, I was worried too since ping pong doesn't seem to be the most engaging sport and I don't really know much about it even though I play it every so often; but that ended up being ancillary to the meat of the story-- those fantastic characters. And yeah, I agree. Those Yuasa moments do come out regularly although I didn't really notice any of those low-angle shots he's fond of. The last match in particular had lots of beautiful Yuasa moments. The only thing is that the animation was kinda lackluster, even though he usually places such a large emphasis on it-- time constraints I guess.
And you finished Kemonozume! How was that?
and you're watching pingpong too, eh? very good yuasa work and aoty so far, even though yuasa's directing is more restrained this time around.
That's an understandable call. Gundam's so massive and wildly inconsistent that it's fascinating and exhausting. I wasn't that big on 08th, but I know it's one of the most popular ones and episode 8 was pretty decent.
Edit: And I just noticed, you haven't seen Mind Game yet???? I'd highly recommend it; it's better than Tatami Galaxy, I think.
Are you going to skip it and head straight to 08th?
Doctor Who, huh? I've been meaning to start on it, but its daunting in its length.
The original Gundam is also terrific (You can always go through the compilation movies if you don't want to go through the series itself) and I thought Votoms is overrated. But then again, I haven't reached the supposedly "good" parts yet in that.
Breaking Bad is a good series, but I think its a wise decision to wait through until the fifth season is done. There's not much waiting to be had. And: Have you ever heard of "The Wire"? Whenever tv series come up, I always tend to recommend this since its become my new obsession since I finished it, four months ago.
