excited for the new kinnikuman anime? who would've thought.
sick_basterd Nov 15, 2022 1:35 AM
I'm fresh off ep 18... Damn what a badass ending. Ramenman is as absurd as it is clever. I love how they used the iron shrapnel from the tank and the magnet to fuck that guy up before using his tiger special attack. Is it just me or do these mid-later episodes have a almost psychedelic art feel to them? Lot's of purples and tie-die water colors, just a total otherworldly feel. It does a great job of illustrating the misty ambience of the deep moutains of China. Fuck man I'm glad you convinced me to watch this.

This shit has potential to be huge in the west if it was handled right. I'm watching the DVDrip by Hokuto no Gun and the image quality is spectacular. Who would've thought Hokuto no Ken would've caught on as late in the west as it has? I feel like 70s, 80s, 90s anime is going to make a big comeback globally soon.

ep 109 for Kinniku? fuck that's perfect. I'm sitting around ep 75 so that gives me a decent enough chunk to catch up on. I hope I can find high quality scans of the manga to fill in the rest before hopping into SFTT. Lemme know when you intend to start watching it, it'd be cool to watch it at the same time.

If you are in the mood for something different, give Urusei Yatsura (2022) a try. I know I was talking mad shit on newer anime in my last comment, but this one is really something. It's by David Production so of course it's gorgeous and fluid but the backgrounds especially the greenery is some of the most realistic and comfy I've seen. The show itself is a sex joke heavy rom-com by the same mangaka who authored Ranma 1/2. I know I also said I don't like ecchi but fuck Ranma has some good tits. Lots of people are trashing it saying "nobody asked for this series to be remade, ect ect" but I see it as a remake we didn't ask for and frankly don't deserve. The original anime is good but horribly dated and has terrible sound quality. This is one of the rare occasions I'll say the remake is better, and that's just based on 5 eps. Anyway sorry if this reads like a ramble, I just smoked a big boy stinky cigarette and I've got a lot to say

Yeah, so far I've loved every episode. I just finished the three demons mini arc, I hope there a few more multi ep stories like that. ep 16 made me swell up in my chest with manly tears when Ramenman takes off his shirt and reveals all his scars he's decided to keep from the martial artists he's defeated. I forgot which ep, but the one where he runs into his childhood friend who is basically a
dogfighter might just be the best episode of televison I've ever seen. Ramenman full on flying kicks a fuckin dog.

The first 100 eps of one piece are as golden to me as dbz, yu yu hakusho, ect. I really am not a huge fan of the series after that.

Fuck dude thats awesome to get RT'd by the man himself.

Yeah so with Chainsaw man... I was trying to give something that came out in the last decade a shot.. it turns out I really am an old school guy when it comes to anime. I just can't stand the art style, and the newer character models feel fake. Also not a huge fan of ecchi, I dropped Bastard for the same reason.

lmao what? the guy sounds like a mentally ill pervert. I'm going to lower my rating to a 3 now just because

Also any info about the rest of the OG kinnikuman getting subbed? I'm dying to dive back in.

Thanks so much! Yeah, I took the name from the Tsuyama Massacre murder's unfinished book, since it was a cryptic intriguing thing also related to the weird case of Abe Sada. The first Yutokaiomaru record was a concrète piece "based" on Abe Sada's story:

Tell me about the novel you're working on, it's an interesting subject.
Pleased to meet you.
Oh, I still have to watch Kinnikuman. I watched few episodes but don't remember it quite well...
sick_basterd Nov 9, 2022 1:42 PM
fuck dude, Ramenman is just as amazing as you made it out to be. It may honestly be more enjoyable than Kinniku, as much as that stings to say.
sick_basterd Oct 31, 2022 3:15 AM
Maybe they will include Japanese dialogue with translated subtitles as an extra... Nah not possible, we are def getting dubtitles with it. that sucks. I can't even find the original Japanese audio with eng subs in decent quailty.

Just watched first ep of Ramenman. Strong first ep, very excited to binge the series. The art is fucking beautiful. It gives off alternate universe goofy Hokuto no Ken vibes.

GUH-GUH-GUH... GUH-GUH-GUH-GAO GAI GAR!! GUH-GUH-GUH.. GUH-GUH-GUH-GUH GAOGAIGARRRRRR!!!!

Yeah so I had the DVDs growing up and the menu had the theme song looping... It will forever be stuck in my head. Keep in mind there is a fairly well done dub of the first half of the series, I think ADV handled it. GaoGaiGar is easily my favorite "super robot" style mecha show. Easy to relax with a few episodes before bed, just fun mindless stuff with great battles and animation.

I agree with you on Votoms 100%. Filthy is the best way to describe the overall look of the anime, I don't know if it's because of the lack of preservation or what, but I feel like I need a shower after watching. So many people brag about it being one of the best classic series of all time up there with OG Gundam... I just don't see it.

Oh man War in the Pocket is excellent. Try out 08th MS Team or Stardust Memory for quality animation. 08th MS Team might honestly be overall the best the franchise has to offer, period.

I've seen more 80s gore fest OVAs than I care to recount. Violence Jack and Vampire Wars have to be my top two favorites. I watched a decent amount of One Piece, but fuck I can't watch it any more. Too many episodes and the pace they adapt the manga at is staggeringly slow. What could take me 2-3 hours to read is adapted to 20+ hours of animation... no thanks. My main gripe with One Piece is that the world is downright too big... Too many characters, too much going on all at once, I don't like it. I particularly dislike how they break every situation up into 5 parts by separating all the characters and switching between them narratively. Not a huge fan of Oda's comedy or character designs either. I will say I highly enjoyed the first 250ish episodes, especially the first 100, pure gold. The series is just too long and silly, with way too much going on.

Man I am loving Patlabor so far. I've been sludging my way through the more unpopular Gundam series over the past few years (Victory... After War X... Right now watching ZZ) and I just had to watch something that has better animation. I love gundam, but fuck the art has aged poorly. I haven't seen the movies at all, not huge on anime movies, but I'll give them a try. I can't believe Sunrise did both ZZ Gundam and Patlabor, watching them both at the same time is a mindfuck. One gripe I do have with Patlabor, maybe because I'm watching the dub, is that there is a lot of still or near-still instances that last a few seconds. When the animation is otherwise so fluid, it is very noticeable and breaks up the flow. I've also noticed that the camera does a lot of slow pans when they are in rooms, or driving. Nice effect I haven't noticed used very often, great way to show a whole scene. Patlabor's animation is easily peak 80s/early 90s, fucking beautiful.

That's great to know about Kinniku. I got caught up hard in that series, but I had to put it down for a bit. I got burned out from watching so many episodes back to back and knowing it isn't fully translated discouraged me. I left off at the part where he is fighting this rainbow guy, pretty trippy stuff. I'm still amazed it never caught on big in the states, wrestling was so popular back in 80s/90s. Maybe I'll watch a random Kinniku movie to get myself back in the silly mood.

I know you didn't ask, but I just have to bitch about ZZ Gundam. Holy fuck. The first 16ish episodes are full of pointless, downright unfunny comedy and damn near skippable after ep 4 once you get to know the characters. Captain Bright is made a fool of and barely even the same character from 0079 and Zeta. I know it's well known as the worst of the UC Timeline, but after watching Victory (another stinker) I didn't think it could get much worse. I'm finally to the "good part" and it's lackluster at best, even compared to the beginning of the show. I'm a completionist though, and after ZZ all I have is Unicorn, which I've seen part of and is very good. I really wish that pre-90s mecha had better production values in general, there are a lot of series I'd like to enjoy (Votoms, Aura Battler Dunbine, Space Runnaway Ideon) that I just can't stomach the animation (or lack of). Votoms is the worst IMO, great story and mecha desgins, great animation... worst character designs of all time. Anyway if you want a fun, easy watching mecha with old school animation I'd rec you GaoGaiGar. It's a little saturday-morning-cartoonish but the theme song is hype and the GAR emotion is there

Been taking a small break from anime to avoid burnout, but I am very down. I know a few people who have unique voices and no experience outside of stage acting. I personally have a medium-high voice for a man so my dream of voicing Terryman may be in the gutter.

Do you have discord?
sick_basterd Feb 9, 2022 8:23 PM
Fuck yeah dude, I didn't know there were any printed in English. I'll hit you with my info in a DM obviously.

SO thoughts on Movie 1 - I was hella impressed by the up in production value and enjoyed the theatrical aspect ratio. As far as story goes, fairly run of the mill. It reminded me of the early DBZ movies. It would be very interesting to see if there is a dub of this from way back in the day, but I highly doubt it received any airtime on english-speaking TV. I gave it a 7/10, easy watch, it breezed by. You really can't do a ton story wise in a 50 minutes, but I was entertained.

hell man, I would be interested in fan-dubbing Kinniku if I could find enough people interested
sick_basterd Feb 7, 2022 10:30 PM
Took a few days off from binge watching Kinniku, I think I'm about ready to jump back in. On ep 71 rn, according to the wiki I should watch movies 1 and 2. kinda disappointed they aren't feature length, but I will report my findings back to you shortly. I am expecting some BAAADASSSS art and production value since at this point Kinniku was popular enough on TV to warrant it. Kinda bummed I'm reaching the end of the series sub wise, I still gotta find decent scans of the manga.
sick_basterd Feb 4, 2022 10:01 PM
Fuck yeah, nothing better than an 80s synth rock anime themes. I was actually just working out and listening to the Hokuto no Ken OST to pump me up.

Fuck dude.. ep 69. Suguru "dying", Rikishiman sacrificing his soul to revive Suguru... all within 10 miuntes.. Goose bumps my guy. They just keep upping the ante. I like how tidy they keep it while still having an emotional impact. Not all situations need to be drawn out with heavy suspense over multiple episodes.
sick_basterd Jan 26, 2022 1:15 AM
BUFFALOMAN'S FUCKING MONOLOGE HOLY SHIT DUDE. so much manliness.
sick_basterd Jan 21, 2022 2:31 AM
It is safe to say that Kinnikuman is an irreplaceable part of Japanese pop culture then, if he has an entire day devoted to him. That makes me even more glad to be watching the series. Right now I'm on the Devil Chojin arc and loving it. They really don't slow down in between arcs, they just GO. Not even an episode or two of bullshit. As far as the pacing goes, I think it's perfect. I find myself watching 2-4 episodes a day and feeling satisfied. Right now I am trying to find high quality scans of the manga so I can pick up where the subbers leave off. I also want to find a good sub of Kinnikuman II Sei and sequels. So far I've been able to find torrents and streams of the dubbed version.. but fuck that. The dub is the reason i never gave the show a chance. I was probably 8 or 9 when it was airing on Fox kids... the voices with the over the top masculinity just looked silly. Now I can see that the silliness of the heroes is meant to juxtapose the extreme violence and general odd psychological shit going on. Kinnikuman as a serious shonen with Hokuto no Ken style characters would be terrifying
