Yeah wait 5-6 years like me. It's such a good time to get into anime right now, there's already a ludicrous amount of classics to watch on top of great series that are still being released. I waited for what seems like my entire time spent watching anime for Attack on Titan season 2 and now I'm waiting, for much less time I might add, for season 3.
I seriously need some time off work though to catch up with everything...
So much anime, so many video games, so many things to be thankful for... so little time.
Glad you liked it. It's been years since I've seen the rebuild movies, I planned on re-watching them recently but I've been too busy. If you want another good mecha show, but much less complex try Gurren Lagann after. By the same studio and it's just as good as NGE imo.
You couldn't tell by the reviews on MAL? Absolutely worth watching. I actually watched the rebuild movies years and years before I got around to watching NGE, so it gave me an interesting perspective on this franchise. All those years, I thought that was all I needed to watch, as I didn't know the movies were actually very different. The movies cut out a lot of the filler that was in the original series which makes it more efficient, but they actually take the story in a completely different direction in the end, which is way better than just remaking the entire series. I think they also cut out a lot of character development from the main series, so there is a trade-off. It's still gonna be a while before they actually get around to finishing all the movies, I'm pretty sure they are still working on the final one, I think, so you may want to put it off for a while if you don't want to play the waiting game.
But if you got that hollow feeling in your heart when you finish a series you love which there is a very good chance considering the movie you are watching, go ahead and watch it, you won't be disappointed. It's worth watching just to see the glorious first act of the series animated so beautifully again.

This is a rare occasion I can warn someone about the emotional blanket sweep the movie is:
