SEGMENT I — Review of the full anime series
[spoilers for all of AOT]
What do you think about the world? Is it a good place or a bad place? Are people inherently good or evil? In Attack on Titan there is no question about it, the world is a cruel place with cruel people who do cruel deeds. The strong prey on the weak as soon as opportunity arises, and to survive you have to fight. However, your effort is ultimately futile, for your life and the lives of your loved ones will be filled to the brim with struggle, and after your sad death the world will not be a better place.
AOT reaches high points several times throughout the seasons in the search for truth and hope. The passionate Eren, the bright-eyed Armin, and the stoic Mikasa make their way in life by fighting year after year, for what they care about the most. The fantasy world in which they inhabit, later to be identified as Paradis, are filled with mysteries both we as viewers and its inhabitants have no answers to. What lies beyond the walls? Where do the titans come from? What is in that basement? During this extremely exciting puzzle, we are treated with spectacular ODM scenes and unforgettable character moments. The offering of less-than-half of a potato, the skill of a captain against a beast, the death of a main character and his unbelievable resurrection. It's utterly wonderful, isn't it? It feels good to kill mindless enemies, they aren't even human after all...
Oops.
The truths reveal themselves one after another culminating in the glorious symphony that is Season 3 Part 2, and peel away the enigmas to show only larger questions and more terrible answers. It turns out the fantasy world is not fantasy and the titans are relatives, furthermore the leaders actually kept this hidden, and kept the suffering going. And on that fateful day, as our beloved trio reach the ocean-side, everything changes.
For me, Season 4.1 was very disappointing. Naming it "The Final Season", when it would take three more years until we saw the end, was just hideous in a multitude of ways. MAPPA takes over from Wit Studio and butchers the artstyle (more on this is the second segment). Linked Horizon's brilliant themes do not show up until the last credits. Marina Inoue stops maturing her Armin performance. The characters change to the worst version of themselves. Armin is stuck doubting himself, Eren sinks into depression, Mikasa loses her morals. Quick ideas, belief in humanity, stern wakeup-talks will have to wait for never. The truths left to discover are no longer "What lies beyond that horizon?", but just "Humanity is even more awful". I tried to stay hopeful but after 20 episodes of horror I understood that those past joys will not come back. You just have to accept that the ending you sought is not the one you will receive, and learn to enjoy the hell of the final episodes.
I do enjoy a sad ending, and I commend anime for often daring to go there. However, in this case it meant seeing all the characters I've followed these past ten years get nothing but pain, and seeing the hope for a better world turn into a dead butterfly trampled by a giant. The credits roll, and stomps it into our hearts one final time, war and destruction will never end. So, then tell me, why did I watch this series?
If it was all for nought, why bother? If Eren is the devil, why care what happens to him? If my favourites die (Marco, Petra, Sasha) or die spiritually (Mikasa, Conny), who is there left to root for? The fighting through all those episodes only led to the worst outcome that the world could ever hope for, and the sacrifice Eren makes saves no one. What's worse, the ending loses believability as important foes like Floch and Yelena get huge plot armour, and whatever the good guys try and do to stop genocide, the only thing that can really alter anything is Eren's will. Tragedies do not get a free pass for plotholes and clichés.
Now, standing at the end of this series I look back at ten years of experiences. Once you accept the dark ending you realize you have been given a rollercoaster ride. You were put in exactly the right place to witness this world of cruelty and hate unfold piece by piece until no beauty is left. While the poor citizens from the ghettos, prisons, refugee camps and warzones in AOT never get to see a world of peace, we who are watching can use this story to learn to give, learn to love. Not go astray from ideals of kindness and freedom. I am thankful for that. And for believing in Mikasa. And for all the potato scenes.
But just think, what if, on that day by the ocean, Eren decided that his world is not cruel…
Even though he misunderstood what they meant, even though twisted leaders would twist their meaning, for me I will never forget the wings of freedom.
Die Flügel der Freiheit!
SERIES SCORE: 7/10

SEGMENT II — Review of The Final Season Part 3
[I watched this in Japanese with English subtitles on Crunchyroll 30 December 2024, I am a 33 yo. male Swede]
Oh, Wit Studio, where art thou? As the huge series Shingeki no Kyojin comes to an end, we put our hope in MAPPA to better their ways after the lacklustre animation they've given us so far. Alas, even here when trying their hardest the results still leaves a lot to wish for. Characters are standing stiff, upright, with arms dead at their sides, with that constant look of dread in their eyes, mouths ajar and eyebrows tense. Whether the mood is warm, sad, comedic, or heartfelt, the dark lines drawn over the eyes are ever-present. With this, the characters we learned to love no longer have life in them, what's left is something akin to a sad parody. The only moments resembling what we know as the anime Attack on Titan is a couple of flashbacks, that almost mimics the quality of the original scenes. It's ironic: in the first seasons Wit Studio did a solid job of transforming the poor art of the early manga volumes into stylish high-quality anime; and now after Isayama refined his artwork over the years to the level seen in the final volumes, MAPPA actually drags the entire visual level down into hit-and-miss territory. The best snapshots feature complicated ODM action sequences, and the worst feature pixelated CGI shit. The story deserves better.
The second biggest offender may be the pacing. Too little work has been put into translating the written source story into a body of animated film entertainment. The manga's final chapters are just given half an hour each, put into two episodes. The bursts of senseless violence, fiery zeal, and gory bloodshed are laid out without appropriate build-up or release, and after that high action follow
suddenly and unsettlingly long, awkward, silent, immobile scenes — the combination of this back and forth unfortunately dulls any sharpness intended. Haphazardly throughout is the flashbacks and dream sequences. All in all the pacing consists of skipping back and forth between different moods without concern for the viewers enjoyment, leaving a bitter taste in the mouth.
What is good here is the story of this horrible world and our horrible heroes. The incredible payoff, or anti-payoff, of having the classic protagonist of shounen manga become the history's singular most evil being is immense. And I mean immense, unbearable even. I remember ten years ago, I didn't like Eren's character, but I LOVED when he went psycho-killer and screamed "I am going to kill them all!". In those moments he was all gusto, all spark, all momentum. Ofcourse, I thought he would conclude his ark like every other shounen MC and save the world. It was inconceivable his murderous intent would actually have actual consequences. But...
Through Eren being bullied and beaten throughout childhood, having his mother eaten before his eyes, eating his own father, titans destroying his birthplace, living as a discriminated refugee, joining the military at a very early age, killing at an early age, facing the destruction of his country, seeing most people he knew die, and learning of a world of hate for him and his kind. All the while having a mindset to crush his enemies and protect his loved ones, raging and going on tantrums, being put in a glorified position of destiny and power where countless lives are sacrificed for him, being contacted through past and present by godlike entities with different intentions. Was there any other way? Couldn't he have turned out to be one of those who creates good outcomes out of evil lessons? Maybe in another world. But as they remind us about their world, from the beginning, again and again:
This world is cruel.

Miss my IRL anime-friends
Anime Relations: Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover
Oh, how I love to watch anime with friends. With Emil, Patrik, Frida and so on. I should probably join an anime-club in my town. But I don't have the energy or time. Maybe my future life-partner will like anime, who knows.
But this year there has been a little bit more anime- and Japan-related interactions, even if by my lonesome. That feels good. Here's hoping even more will follow <3
* listening to: dearly beloved *
* feeling: big feels *

Animanga historia
Anime Relations: Mononoke Hime, Pokemon, Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, Digimon Adventure, Hotaru no Haka, Ginga Nagareboshi Gin
PRE-POKEMON
a- Sailor Moon
(a- Mumin)
a- Silver Fang
a- Eldflugornas grav
a- Princess Mononoke
m- Mästerdetektiven Conan
a- Stink Bomb (ur Memories)
Serien hette Pokemon.
a- Pokemon
a- Digimon
a- Beyblade
m- Dragon Ball
POST-POKEMON
a- Duel Masters
a- Yu-Gi-Oh!
NARUTO-VÅGEN
Någonstans här så började jag skryta med att jag redan visste om anime och manga långt innan andra, när plötsligt alla blev galna i Naruto, One Piece, Death Piece och senare Bleach.
m- One Piece
a- Naruto
m- Death Note
MANGAMANIA
m- Love Hina
m- Chobits
m- GTO
m- Naruto
m- Bleach
m- Shaman King
EMIL-SAN
a- 5cm per second
a- the Voice of a distant star
a- the Place promised in our early days
a- Perfect Blue
a- Lucky Star
a- Dokuro-chan
PATRIKS MAMMAS DVDer
a- Origin
SAMTITTA m FRIDA
a- Baccano!

About Me (from 2008)
("About Me" from my old profile, written on 31/12/08, near the beginning of the year 2009)
ScrumYummy made my more-than-awesome profile picture. Thank you so much! d(^_^)b - Domo Arigato!
It's based on my own face, but this picture is much more good-looking. XD
Hello!
Konichiwa! Manga and anime is just one of my many interests and I really enjoy it. In fact, I like almost everything I see when it comes to japanese animation. I love japanese culture and art and I think that they are the leading country when it comes to animated movies and comics, closely followed by USA. Animes and mangas often have a very good quality and I wish that my world will be filled with more of it.
Favourites
My most favorite anime is Princess Mononoke. I have a strong connection to the movie, and all I can say that it's EPIC! The scenes are amazing, and I love every bit of it. Studio Ghibli haven't been beaten yet, and they are still my favorite anime production studio. Another one of my favorite's that has to be mentioned is Paprika. I love movies that messes with your head and Paprika did it beautifully. I was stunned after I saw it. And the soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard. Crazy good music! I've also been lucky enough to have my life graced by movies like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Howl's Moving Castle and 5 Centimetres Per Second. My most favourite manga is Nausicaä. Finally, I'd like to mention that I really like the manga Great Teacher Onizuka and that I totally agree with anyone claiming that Hayao Miazaki is a genius.
