Now that i have a the slightly misleading title out of the way, let me ask you what the question i have drawn you here for. This goes out to those who have a true appreciation for the series on a level past "It was good" or "It was funny" I mean i want real reasons here. Why do you like full metal panic? Spoilers are fine, as i have seen the entire series from start to finish, as well as having seen the OVA. I can honestly say, i had to force my way through it all. I did not like it. Yet it is so popular and well reviewed. What makes this anime good?

It was the first anime I ever watched that wasn't on Toonami (DBZ, Gundam Wing, Sailor Moon) or early Adult Swim (YYH, Inu Yasha, Cowboy Bebop). It's been several years since I watched it, but I loved the characters, especially Chris Patton as Sousuke; I thought the romance between Sousuke and Kaname was cute; Kaname was my first tsundere anime crush; I liked the blend of rom-com and action; and I loved the music. It's not flawless, but I greatly enjoyed it.

Thank you for the reply. Personally, I hated Sousuke. The only character I liked was the captain Tessa.

I like the romcom aspect of it.

You might want to try watching it subbed or dubbed, whichever you didn't see the first time around. They give you a bit of a different vibe for some of the characters.

In short, I didn't really like it a lot the first time I saw it. I thought it was OK. But every time I watch it again, I like it a little more.

You have a bunch of interesting characters, and a lot of them have their back stories fairly well explored. In the two main series there is a good bit of character development as well.

In short, FMP does characters, action, romance, comedy, drama, tragedy, and slice of life quite well.

Of course it has its flaws too. The whole concept of the "Whispered" was not adequately explored, Kaname's back story was noticeably largely absent, the main antagonist's reasons for being such a terrible person are never laid bare. Too much to do and not enough episodes really, which is why we need more FMP.

And in all fairness, if you watched the threes series in the recommended order (FMP then FMP:TSR then Fumoffu) you ended with Fumoffu which kinda ends with the feeling that some of the characters haven't really progressed much after all. I think Fumoffu's events are better understood as being simultaneous with the events of the two main series.

^ I enjoyed watching Fumoffu after S1 and then watched Seconf Raid after.

But to answer OP question. I thought most of the characters were well rounded and entertaining granted you might not like them all but they interacted nicely and a little but fleshed out. Especially the interactions between protags and Sousuke and Tessa.

The action was decent especially for how little there actually was and the storyline was not a jumbled mess and was fun to follow. It's not something that was suppose to be taken seriously, but to sit back enjoy the fights and laugh at the random antics that happen between the characters when stuff wasn't trying to be serious.

-not boring mecha fights (unlike any other mecha anime that boring)
-relationship between the 3 characters, Sousuke, Kaname and Tessa
-i also like the personality of Sousuke, emotionless at times but he's will to protect Kaname is superb

You're right about the sub vs dub thing; I found the dub a lot funnier, personally. The last bit of your post surprised me, though. I've never heard anyone suggest that order. I've always known the order to be FMP! -> Fumoffu! -> TSR.

That's the actual order the series aired in (FMP: 2002, FMP:Fumoffu!: 2003 , FMP:TSR: 2005) . The only thing is some people say you should watch Fumoffu! after TSR, and then others say TSR then Fumoffu...for various reasons, like for example if you want to directly continue the plot of FMP immediately then watch TSR, then Fumoffu last as a sort of fun /goofy note to end the series on.

Right now I'm watching FMP! and I'm watching it in the airing order that you listed. I pretty much always prefer to watch series in the order they were aired even if its not chronological for the actual story of a series, to avoid confusion and complications about watching order.

I ended up watching Full Metal Panic so I could watch FMP Fumoffu, but I think that the best part about this show is that you don't have to think, and can turn your brain off to enjoy some action and comedy. Good or not, if you have just come from a thinking/feeling show, this is a good experience to let you down softly.

FMP! is not bad at all, unless you hate mechs and romcom subplot. This was my first taste in real anime and I enjoyed all 3 seasons of it!

Full Metal Panic seems like a perfectly average 5/10 or 6/10 anime with all of its cliches. Especially when it comes to genre and setting: it's a strange mix of action, comedy, mecha, military, school, romance, and fanservice. Oh and the characters are teenagers saving the world from terrorists, go figure. So yeah, it's a very average anime, but I don't think any other anime comes close to FMP's average-ness... if that makes sense.

Season 1 is a good mixture of romcom and action, Fumoffu is a very funny comedy spinoff and TSR is serious action and a very good conclusion of the series. I think Sousuke is a likeable character and his relationship with Gauron was really good and fleshed out.

In many anime teenagers are saving the world from whatever. So the averageness of FMP is pretty common.

After the Hong Kong arc the rest of the story is much darker, more serious and less comedy. It is a shame that kyoani didn't adapt the whole novel.
