I have a problem with this [entry] for Ghost In The Shell 2.0.

I dont think MAL should have an anime page for re-releases. As far as we can tell, this is the same Ghost In The Shell of 1995 but with better animation and a new dub. Is this really deserving of another MAL page? And if so, then in order to stay consistent you're going to have to make a hell of a lot of duplicate pages for other re-released anime, like Akira, Ninja Scroll, etc, etc.

Can I get a firm 'yes' or 'no' to re-releases having their own MAL page? Personally I think they're redundant and mess up our stats.

Yeah, but here's the thing: Its the same story.

Whats the point in having two entire pages, with the exact same details: characters, writers, directors, and not to mention two forums both discussing the same topic. Its the very epitome of redundancy and a waste of bandwidth. Just think of how many anime pages we're going to have every time an anime gets a remaster! Its the same story. Its just going to mess up MAL I think, if we keep making pages like this. There's like a billion versions of Star Wars, but one IMDB page for each film. Nice and simple.

I don't see why another page is needed. Iuts just a remaster, that would mean there should be a page for NGE remastered,Platinum and whatever directors cuts there are. its the same anime at the end of the day and Alt title would do imo.

It does look more like a Remake instead of just a remastered version. If you look at the visuals, the experience of watching the old version should be quite different from this new one. The music will be totally new and some character voices are different/new. Qualifies for a separate db entry.

looks like a remake to me, which would apply for it's own db entry, if proven otherwise we'd rethink it ofc

No way, if the scenes are identical then its a remaster, not a remake. Doesnt matter if they look prettier.

We'll know for sure when it comes out I guess. I just really dont like the idea of multiple MAL pages for the same anime, my OCD nature is sweating just thinking about it.

Well I know they're replacing a lot of scenes with new CG and apparently new content, but yeah.

Perhaps there could be a new section on anime pages for possible "remake" info or something? I dunno. I'm kind of neutral on this I guess.

I have yet to hear of actual new content aside from different voice acting.

That's what disney does when they remaster shows too. For lion king they added scenes and songs, but it's still the same movie.

If the new version hasn't been released yet then we really can't tell if it is a remastered or a remake? I haven't seen the first one so I can't really give an opinion on it, but if it really is just a remastered then I don't think it'd deserve a new page either.

I will be watching it very carefully and if its the same GitS of 1995 (as every indication points to currently) then I will be heavily petitioning the deletion of the MAL entry for 2.0. If that petition fails, then I will simply go about creating a billion MAL pages for remastered anime to ram home my point. :P

This is a very important topic for me because the reason MAL exists is to collect and oragnise data, and if the data is incorrect then there's no reason to use MAL.

In remasters' case (where the entire point of a remaster is to spruce up the visual/audio, not the story), simply having 'Alternative Version' underneath 'Alternative Title' on the left side panel would be best, I think.

I'm all for new MAL entries for remakes, but they have to definitely be remakes, as in a completely new interpretation of a previous story, like Reideen ( original V remake )

It's a remake, not a remaster. Do you consider the Star Wars movies with fancy new CGI, extra scenes, and removal of certain old classic moments (such as Han shooting Greebo first, and Leia adjusting her breasts after they leave the garbage compactor) the same as the originals? I certainly consider them re-makes, not simple remasters. There were some significant differences to the originals.

And Rebuild of Evangelion. It is pretty much identical to the series, and the four (or whatever) movies will be covering the story the series already did. Do you consider it a remaster as opposed to a remake?

Different titles deserve different entries. A ten+ year gap, particularly. They're different. As the Air series and Air movie are different, Kanon and Kanon06 are different, Clannad series and movie are different. So what if it's the same story? If it's being told in different ways (especially with different animation and voices) it certainly should not be merged with the original.

If the only thing changed is aesthetic, its a remaster, not a remake. Why is this so hard to bloody understand? If a single scene has not been removed or changed in GitS 2.0, how on Earth is it a remake? It just looks prettier.

Rebuild of Eva is a remake. The story is shuffled around and completely new scenes in the final movie will change the entire story.

Asako, you are probably the only person on the planet who thinks Star Wars is a remake. It's certainly a very unique example to analyse, thus a bad one to use as an example in this debate, but no matter how many times Lucas screws up his own creation, its still the same story, just with more shitty CGI. (again: this is why each movie, no matter how many versions of it there have been, has only 1 IMDB page) Its more overboard than a conventional remaster, but it is in no way a remake. Spielberg re-jigged E.T and added stupid walkie talkies and re-inserted some scenes, did people claim it was a remake? No. New IMDB page? Nope. If Brett Ratner directed E.T. this year, that would be a remake. If Spielberg released another version of E.T this year in 3D, that would not be a remake. Get it yet?

Clannad series and Clannad movie deserve different entries because they're different formats, obviously. If there were two Clannad movies, exactly identical except one just looked better in CGI, then they wouldnt deserve two MAL pages. Its the same film.

Just how many MAL entires are we going to have everytime this happens? There would be dozens of MAL pages for the same anime, it would be ridiculous, I wouldnt even know which forum to post a thread in, because if the story's identical in each entry, then WTF?

EDIT: Plus there's the fact that our stats will be actually lying. You would have 150 completed anime for example, but maybe dozens of those anime are all identical except for aesthetic changes, so in actual fact maybe you only watched 130 completed anime, 20 of those stats in your list are just useless MAL entries all of the same damn anime.

I was curious and checked how the other sites list GitS 2.0. didn't found it on ANN, but AniDB lists GitS & 2.0 as only one entry. check the episode list here. I'm not saying which solution is better though.

This is already the case with specials and OVAs anyway. I wish there were a way to merge them in to their parent series to reduce list clutter, as mentioned in another thread, but they're kept separate for various reasons. It should be the same for re-releases and remakes.

Well dtshyk's description of GitS 2.0 tells me this is definitely not a remake at all and seriously does not deserve a MAL page of its own. It's like having another page for the re-release of Akira which had a re-recorded dub and better image: there isnt one because there is just.no.point. Please delete the MAL page for 2.0 and just mention it under the 'alternative title' tab. :(

Reading that post makes me even more disagree with deleting this entry. I'm not a DB Admin but as Anime DB Mod I still vote for keeping it.
