Synopsis

At Ouran High School, an academy where only the children of the rich and powerful attend, there exists a club consisting of the most elite of the student body: the legendary Host Club. Within the club's room, six beautiful, bored boys spend their time entertaining equally beautiful and bored girls.

Haruhi Fujioka, a poor scholarship student, has no interest in the Host Club—until she breaks a valuable vase in their clubroom. After being mistaken for a boy, Haruhi is forced by Kyouya Ootori to work for the Host Club to repay her debt. Tamaki Suou, the princely leader of the club, eagerly takes her under his wing to teach her the ways of the host.

Things, however, are never quite so simple with the Host Club around. Even the most mundane events can turn into huge spectacles with the likes of prankster twins Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin, stoic Takashi Morinozuka, and sweet Mitsukuni "Hunny" Haninozuka. The crazy adventures of the Host Club are just beginning, and Haruhi must learn how to survive in the glitzy world of the hosts.

Background

Ouran Koukou Host Club was published in English as Ouran High School Host Club by VIZ Media under the Shojo Beat imprint from July 5, 2005, to June 5, 2012. An 18-volume boxed set including an exclusive notepad featuring the character's art was later released. It was also published in Polish by Japonica Polonica Fantastica from October 2009 to September 2013.

The series was adapted into several drama CDs, which were given to LaLa magazine applicants. It was also adapted into a live-action TV series with a live-action film sequel; the former aired from July 22, 2011, to September 30, 2011, and the latter premiered on March 17, 2012. Three Japanese musical adaptations of the manga were performed in 2022 and 2023.

This manga was a very fun read, for me. Enjoying the introduction of more plot, and getting to see each character develop as their
emotions for one another change throughout the story made it much more exciting and intriguing. This manga is perfect for a
lighthearted, fun, and wholesome read, while getting a good laugh in once in a while. (Plus, extra episodes!?)

The story was unique in how you could almost never see what was coming in some episodes, but with that in mind, it really enhanced the episode and kept my interest, even if it didn't necessarily add to the plot.

I REALLY like this manga. Not only is the story developed incredibly well and naturally, but the characters grow alongside it, helping each other improve and become better people. The romance is an special highlight, being incredibly heartwarming, healthy and based on feelings of admiration and respect, which is fascinating for the time. Everything, from Tamaki's family to Haruhi's character arc is given a fantastic resolution, and I can't recommend reading this enough for those who liked the anime. EVERY character gets developed and given a strong conclusion, which is very nice.

I am not a fan of this manga. I bought the complete set because it had been recommended so much to me...and ended up selling it right after finishing.

So, what's the big deal? The characters were just not likable to me. Spoiled boys who lack morals hanging around a mediocre and lackluster girl. It just seemed to lack the depth I like in a good story. The characters needed more to them...something that could make them seem more like decent people.

Story - I'm being generous if I give it a 4/10. It was slow at times and didn't seem very grounded. There wasn't enough comedy ...
