“What makes someone an Akudama?”
My vote for best anime of 2020 goes to Akudama Drive.
Akudama drive is an original work that follows the cyberpunk style, the anime follows the story of our protagonist named "?????", yes she does not have a name, she is called "Ordinary Person" or "The Swindler", she ends up getting involved with the biggest crime since the end of the war. This is the premise of Akudama Drive, criminals, forced to commit a crime in exchange for money and freedom, simple and direct.
The first thing I thought when start watching the anime was "Why don't the characters have names?", If you
...
analyze the names of all the characters well, you will notice that the name is based on the function that each one has, or better, you will notice that each name depends on the way that Kanto sees the person, and this is what makes Akudama special, it’s not just an anime with violence and blood on the screen, it’s a social and philosophical discussion, to what extent does a state interfere in the way people think and act, or in the case of Akudama, to what extent does one nation interfere with the way people of another nation think?
Let's go back to the war period a bit, the countries "Kanto” and "Kansai" were fighting each other in what appeared to be an endless war, but every war has a winner, in which case after Kanto dropped a bomb on Kansai, she got the victory. After the victory, Kanto "reaches out" to Kansai and helps her to stand up after the defeat. If you think about it, this story is very similar to Japan after the war, USA dropped two bombs on Japanese territory that soon admitted defeat and to get back on their feet received help from the nation that had destroyed it through the Marshall Plan. Coincidence? I think not. After the war, the Kansai government and police force were in constant decline, leading to an increase in crime. These criminals are now called "Akudama". To stop them, the Kansai Police Execution Division is created, a division created especially to kill them, that way, little by little, the Executors go "Cleaning" the country. Meanwhile, the creation of a divine image of Kanto is created, Shinkansen, for example, is worshiped by both the executioners and the people of Kansai as if he were a god. Kanto itself is seen as something unattainable, and even the last stage of human survival. Another example is the manipulation that reaches both adult and child audiences through the cartoon "Shark and Bunny”.
And the main question to be answered, "What makes someone an Akudama?" Such a question haunted me throughout the anime and if you prefer we can simply change the words to our reality, "What makes someone a criminal?", Disobey the laws instituted by a constitution? Go against the interests of the State? Or go against the interests of a dominant nation? A classic example is the military dictatorship in Brazil, supported by the United States of America, the military took control of the country and introduced several laws that prohibited various practices that were against the state. During that period, simply being a Communist or having a different political position was a crime, you would be tortured or killed for it. But where did this political positioning come from? The military or who supported them? Who was afraid of having another socialist country in America?
In Akudama Drive, there are no people, there are roles and people are recognized for what they do and nothing else. In Akudama Drive there are no heroes, there are no villains, there are people fulfilling what their name says, sometimes just being "an ordinary person”.

“I am profoundly disappointed in you” - H. Watson
* CONTAIN SPOILERS * (How you analyze something without giving some spoilers?)
Hello anime fans of all around the globe, what a terrible year this was, I’m just impressed of how everything just went worst and worst and worst. But this is not the time to shit on how this year was a disappointment, is time to say how Yuukoku no Moriarty was a disappointment.
First things first, this is NOT the first time someone’s re-imagined Moriarty as a hero (or more commonly, an antihero). Michael Kurland’s Professor Moriarty series of books comes to mind in the prose arena.
...
For those who like a historical background, anime takes place in the late 19th century during the Victorian era, a time when parliamentarism provided an approximation between the social strata. Even so, the concentration of goods in the hands of a few, resulting in the oppression of workers. In this way, the anime deals with the huge economic and social inequality of English society, and that is where our protagonist, KIRA, I mean, Moriarty, comes in. Responsible for combating the injustices suffered by the "poor" while passing for the second son of an aristocratic family.
The first thing that strikes me is the anime's Moriarty compared to Doyle's Sherlock. The big difference between the two is due to the way they want to achieve their goals, Moriarty as said several times in the anime, will use whatever means are necessary (less to kill others himself, because he is a gentleman) while Sherlock despite having the same ideals, seeks justice "fairly". This difference could have been much more explored and valued especially after episode 9.
This is the second review I make for this anime, the first one, I had only watched the first 5 episodes, and until episode 8, it’s go the same way, Moriarty is fucking GOD and do the most brilliant crimes (without get his hands dirty), no one can resolve it and That’s it, The End, that’s Moriarty. For me that’s the first big problem with this, Sherlock just took to much time to make an appearance, and the cases that we should involve the telespectador, started to get boring, the same and the same thing over and over again, yes they change somethings but that’s it.
Episode 8 starts, everything changed, Sherlock gave this show everything, yes his is intelligent as Moriarty, but he’s a far better character than everyone in the show. Moriarty plays like the intelligent, cold blood and manipulator character (think everyone is just tired of this type of “person”), In contrast, Sherlock is extrovert and comic, in other words, his a human. Unfortunately, Sherlock was not enough to save this broken ship, a perfect example is the last case, how Moriarty “find the culprit” is fucking stupid.
I will continuing to follow the series with the second season and maybe give the manga a chance, but this first season is like Watson said “I am profoundly disappointed in you”, if you really want to get into Sherlock universe just read Doyle books, you will be impressed by the differences. This is quote, Another bad adaptation featuring the Sherlock universe, unquote.
