Trigun Stampede

On the planet Noman's Land, reporters Meryl Stryfe and Roberto De Niro traverse the desert in search of the infamous outlaw Vash the Stampede. But the man they find near the desolate town of Jeneora Rock is a far cry from the lethal terrorist they expect. In reality, Vash is a passive and carefree drifter; he is a proponent of peace, beloved by the residents of the town. His inaccurate reputation actually stems from the widespread atrocities committed by his twin brother Knives Millions. Still, Vash is dubbed "The Humanoid Typhoon'' due to the tendency for violent chaos to follow in his wake.

Chaos soon arrives in the form of bounty hunters seeking the high price on Vash's head, and their violent pursuit poses great danger to the town and its precious power plant. Thanks to his gunslinging prowess, Vash is able to resist most of these nefarious forces. Yet he must soon face off against the ultimate evil: the unstoppable destructive power of his malevolent brother.

I honestly don't know what to make of this one. I saw the original Trigun several years ago and thought it was ok. A mixed bag, but overall a good show. I wasn't sure what this was, going into it. The best way to describe it is that it's an alternate setting/timeline for the original Trigun story. We still have Vash the Stampede and his morale code of never killing anyone at the forefront of the story. But the world, setting, storyline, and other supporting cast members are all now COMPLETELY different. I honestly wasn't a fan of the comedy in the original Trigun, so ... I was actually pleasantly surprised to see this show remain entirely in a serious and dramatic state. It's a drastically more tragic tone than the original show, which was quite surprising. The 3D visuals are... ok, I guess. Things looked best when they were in constant motion. The original show is SUPER old and could've definitely used a glow up. But aside from making this new story seem even more unfamiliar and distinct, I'm not sure if 3D was the way to go. The music is excellent, but again, feels completely different from what I imagine Trigun sounding like. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, since it gives this show more of its own identity. I honestly wonder if I'd just like this show more if it didn't attach itself to the Trigun property. Both shows are completely separate from one another and can coexist regardless of whether you're a fan of both of them or not. So there's certainly no reason to be upset at this new take for simply existing. Just like the original Trigun, this show was a mixed bag for me. But for very different reasons. Regardless, I do think Stampede has enough original ideas to be worth checking out, and can easily be enjoyed as your introduction to the Trigun franchise.

Mixed Feelings

I enjoyed this a lot as someone who hasn't seen the original. But I can imagine that og fans might be disappointed, since apparently a lot of things have been changed. I can't be disappointed since I have no idea what the story is missing. But I have to admit that it was a little fast paced, and a little confusing at times (i didnt really understand why some of the people were following wolfwood? I think I missed something...)

I've also seen many people call the cgi bad?? I disagree as someone who has seen a lot of cgi shows and movies. The cgi was ... amazing compared to some other stuff i've seen (cough, aot s4, cough). The action scenes were fluid and natural, and the camera movements topped them off. The characters don't look detached from their surroundings (like the titans in aot s4💀).

I'll be honest, if I pretend Trigun doesnt exist I don't think stands on its own at all. They intended to do a prequel/reboot at the same time and it just feels rushed the whole way through. A lot of the moments the characters had in the original anime to grow on you and each other are missing, so it doesnt make sense to me at least how much Meryl, and especially Wolfwood like Vash. Wolfgang just gets put in terrible situations following Vash around, and when he tries to respond with lethal force Vash just complains about how he should be more of a ... priest and treat life as sacred.

If they just wanted a prequel or reboot it wouldve done much better imo. They could've had some stories about Vash flailing through a couple of situations, saving the day and adding to his bounty and legend until that fateful incident, and maybe a cameo from the fan-favorites and a 'here's what they were doing around this time'. Ultimately they created a terrible writing situation trying to cram everything they could into 12 episodes and leaving behind a lot of the stuff that made the original anime such a classic. Trigun is by no means perfect, but what it did well this reboot lacks, and instead offers little in return other than nostalgia. Get ready to watch an average show with some characters you used to know.
