How do you balance reading multiple manga at once?

Juggling multiple manga at once can be fun, but it also gets tricky—keeping up with storylines, waiting for updates, or even forgetting where you/or the series left off. Do you stick to one series at a time, or do you bounce between several? How do you keep track without losing the plot (literally)?

I take notes (please don't laugh xD) some of my MAL notes have random thoughts after every significant chapter. Reading back a few chapters can help sometimes. I don't think it's possible to not forget otherwise if the manga releases monthly or longer for fan translations.

I tend to collect new chapters and read them in chunks. At least those with a complex plot.

For instance I stopped reading Psycho_x_Past at the end of the last story arc and I'm keeping it on hold until I have 5-10 chapters available so I can read the next arc in full.

It's easier to track what happened on physical manga since at the beginning there's like "The plot so far" page or panel which you can read if you've forgotten.
Though many times for me, the series have been so mediocre that nothing has even happened that is noteworthy so you can just start reading the new volume.

As far as literally knowing where I left off, I keep track of what chapter I last read through sites like MAL. As far as keeping track of the story, if I put it on hold for a long time I might reread the last few chapters or previous volume. Though if it has been a really long time I sometimes reread from the beginning, since I've already read it before I tend to read it faster than I did the first time so I can catch up pretty quickly. I also tend to read manga in chunks, waiting to read entire volumes or multiple chapters at a time rather than reading multiple week to week.

If it is more of a slice of life series where each chapter are only loosely connected like a gag series, then I usually don't care that much about keeping track.

I just keep track of the chapter I'm on with MAL. I try to read almost exclusively completed manga since I hate to have a lot of series which are ongoing since I have to wait for new chapters. When it comes to remembering what has happened etc I probably have good memory since I can easily have a few dozen series as ones I read and not get them tangled.

I always try to finish in one-sitting. For serializing manga, I like to completely forget about the manga after I've caught up, then after several months I'll re-read from halfway through. Some authors tend to release monthly-chapters which is a little disappointing though

I do nothing for one piece, I try to read full volumes or arc bursts if possible. I write small notes for other serializing manga I ain't seeing in months, things like what is happening who is who and with who. It works with books too. It is like 1 to 3 sentences. But I am not the biggest reader here. If I lose my notes I go back to the manga and scan it until I know what is going on. If I have to re-read some it is ok.

I follow a lot of ongoing series. Some of them takes months to update (if I'm lucky) so I keep a lot on my list hoping that I'll often have an update to read.

I track my chapters on another site and just read the new chapters hoping I'll remember what was going on. I have good memory so the content of the new chapter is usually enough to jog my memory. If I feel really lost, I go back a few chapters and do a quick reading.

As long as I remember the most recent facts, I don't have no problem following the plot. In longer series there's usually a reference in the manga itself helping the readers remember an old scene or a character that hasn't showed up in a long time. And when it doesn't, there might be a translator's note or a nice fellow reader that comments the chapter we need to check.

I tend to at least try and stick to one at a time just because I feel like I'll start reading eight at the same time otherwise, that and it can be tempting to read something else instead of continuing a longer series and I'd like to prevent that as much as possible. I generally don't have a problem with the actual story if I leave it for a while though, sometimes I'll skim back a few chapters or something if there's something specific I'm not sure on, but in general my memory's pretty great so even if I leave stuff for ages I'm mostly fine. In fact, I actually think I should read multiple series at once more than I do.

I read A LOT of ongoings. Most of the time it’s enough to read updates every day – doesn’t take too much time but sufficient for a daily dose of reading. And with all those updates you don’t really feel the time between new chapters. If I have more time, I skim through other updates to find new ones to start. Funny that I never found it to be hard or confusing, it’s actually interesting how I can remember the contents of most of them even if the previous chapter was months ago. Surely, I’m not up to date with all of them, but I might get to catching up one day – that’s why we have this list here.
Unfortunately, with just sheer number of manga, I CAN forget some series that I’ve completed years ago, that’s why nowadays I try to save some pages I’ve liked, so that I can at least remember the title in the future by their art or characters.

I don't really have this problem, I usually just re-read the last couple of chapters if need be, it all comes back to me after eventually lol.

Between bookmarks and mobile browsers loading tabs where you left off in the series, I like the ease of reading manga online. Other than that, it's just a matter of pacing for me. I've three seperate "queues" of manga going on right now, two of them for a couple of Marga Reading Challenge Club challenges and one for this year's MRC. Depending on how busy my day is, I'll try to read 5/10/15 chapters of each series in a day. If I have to switch from mobile to desktop or vice versa, multiples of five are easier for me to track.

I have a hard time keeping up with multiple ongoing manga, so I prefer reading ones that are already finished. For the few ongoing series I do follow, I usually reread a few chapters to refresh my memory. But if I put a series on hold for years after catching up at the time, I don’t mind rereading the whole thing for the experience.

I am currently reading around 2000 manga. MAL is pretty useful to track number of chapters. For memory refresh, I sometimes revisit previous chapters but its not necessary most of the time. Reading a couple of new chapters is enough for me to remember what happened before.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

I'm pretty good at pacing myself. Once I get into a manga I usually stay with it till the long run. Unless it's something that I find totally disinteresting and I end up dropping.

Each manga has its own story and its own characters, I won't mix them up even if I read a lot at once

I generally try to limit the amount of ongoing manga that I read at a time, and I give preference to series that get new chapters regularly (ex. Kagurabachi) over series that tend to only get updates when new volumes release in English (ex. My Girlfriend's Child). For some reason, it's easier to keep track of the plot in my head if I read it on a regular basis. I also tend to drop series pretty often, so that frees me up for new stuff as well.

I just started reading The World is Mine, Innocent, and Kiichi! for their political and revolution themes. I'm balancing reading all three by reading one volume each and taking notes to compare them. That's probably over the top for most people though, but even just consuming manga that are similar to each other and comparing them can help with balance.

I follow several manga at once. When I just discover the manga, I would focus on catching up to it - once I catch up, I just wait for new chapters to read. While waiting, I'd read other manga, catch up to it and then adding it to the list I wait updates for and end up with several ongoing manga I follow at once.

I check on updates regularly. I use an app where I read manga and it would just update itself when there's a new chapter on one (or several) of the manga I read. I usually read the new chapter right away when I have time to check and there's an update. Occassionally, I will wait for several chapters to be released before I binge them - usually for manga I really enjoy.

I also update my MAL for latest chapter I read to keep track. As for keeping track on the plot - I usually just remember what was happening once I read the new chapter, but if I forget then I just reread the previous chapter(s).

Lately, I try to read manga by volume only, except for a few series that I follow intensely on ComicWalker and NicoNico, that literally send me notifications and emails when they're updated. (Really helpful, since they also only get a half-chapter at a time, usually.)

Even with ongoing manga, waiting and reading by volume helps give me a nice stopping point, so I feel comfortable putting the series down for a while. It's usually at a good conclusion for a mini-arc, so I can remember, "oh, last time they wrapped up this arc", and then starting the next volume will usually have some sort of mini-recap on what just happened; the characters will remark/reflect on it before we get into the new arc, etc.
And if it ended on a cliffhanger, the next volume will usually clearly show the cliffhanger-y situation the characters were in, to start. And that easily jogs my memory if I need it.

In this way, I feel super comfortable jumping between series, even without taking notes, and obviously keeping track of chapters is easy with MAL. I also actually love reading by volume more than by chapter, because like Shirayukin said, I know I'll have a bunch of chapters of a story that I really enjoy, waiting for me to read.
