Mario started out in 2D, jumping across side-scrolling levels, but 3D Mario changed everything with open worlds and crazy new mechanics. Some people love the tight platforming and challenge of classic 2D Mario, while others prefer the freedom and exploration in 3D games.
Which style do you think is better, and why? Or do both have their own strengths that make them equally great?

It's funny, generally speaking I much prefer the 2D Mario games over the 3D ones. However my all-time favorite Mario game is in fact Super Mario 3D World on the Switch / Wii U. Odd how that worked out for me. XD
Mostly I prefer 2D Mario games. BUT my absolute favorite Mario games are the Galaxies which are 3D. I've played ones on console, handheld etc. and the 2D ones are mostly more enjoyable for me on average.
I prefer 2D Mario games because the enemies are more of a threat in the 2D space. In 3D games you can just kinda run around the enemies and mostly ignore them. I love both styles, however.
