Something I noticed when watching shoujo and Josie anime/manga is that human charcters always feel more realistic compared to shounen where charcters feel more like tropes than actual people. Also im not saying all sounen /seinin have this problem just the majority I have read and wwatchd compared to shoujo and josei.

Well, I guess they are slightly more realistic, especially Josei. But of course it depends on the show.

See I've not seen a lot of Shoujo or Josie. I have seen a fair amount of Seinin and Sounen. In the latter two I do think Seinin often has more realistic characters, with believable goals and often tackle more mature themes and topics unlike Sounen. So I'd assume the same could be said of Josie and Shoujo - as Shoujo is the childish idealised version of the reality with Josie often presents.
Sometimes it takes a real man to be best girl. Gilgamesh is also chad.

@NS2D I don't mean stuff like Battle shounen I mean stuff like romance or slice of life or stories about realistic problems

I think the title is not worded very well and will be drawing a lot of angry/snarky responses...

I kiiind of see what you're saying in the OP, though.

What I've seen of shoujo/josei do seem interested in making characters feel like "real people," people that I've known or come across in real life.

"Interested" doesn't mean they're successful, obviously, and they do often rely on well-worn tropes and archetypes to get by. And of course many of them aren't interested in that to begin with; I was shocked by how nobody in Honey Lemon Soda, a shoujo romance from this season, acted like actual people at all...

And there are many characters from shounen/seinen that I think are written noticeably like "real people." Right now I'm thinking of Skip & Loafer and Insomniacs After School.

I have seen enough shoujo slop to know that's not true. They also has has tropes and characters and there's nothing wrong with it.
Seinen/Josei will be more real and mature and last 2 as expected from it. More than gender it's about age.

Josei might be, but I think shoujo are still very tropey. It's probably because most shoujo/josei focuses on the characters thoughts and emotions, so it's easier to connect to them as humane characters - but I find more seinen with realistic characterization than shoujo. It's probably more like josei/seinen (more realistic) vs shoujo/shounen (less realistic).

Yes, that's why they're far less popular.

I wouldn't judge those demographics as a whole, but I might agree because the manic pixie dream girl (fairly common love interest in shounen/seinen romance) is farther from realism than any shoujo/josei romance trope.

Nope, never got that impression

All 4 demographics have their good shows with well written realistic characters, and by realistic i don't mean it has to be a realistic setting, you can still have the fantasy setting and extravagant powers while having the character feel real, and all 4 also have their not so good shows with characters that feel like cardboard cutout stereotypes, but the latter is not the majority in any of the demographics, i don't even think that of josei which is the one i'm least into

As a general rule I would say yes for Josei. Partly because the subject matter is generally more err... grounded and the pool is smaller?

Shoujo is a more mixed bag, some things do I feel get a more true to life presentation, but that's probably because their shounen equivalent is more likely to be badly handled in the aggregate. If the setting is just another otome game with your five flavours of guy, then it's gonna be the usual cartoon... but in a show where its a more close in, no more than 2 sides to your love story (for any length of time anyway) type show then on average I would say a shoujo show is probably gonna hit a little closer to real life.

Compare for example the treatment of sex in say Nana and Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun with a shounen show from the same time period... I remember when I saw Horimiya thinking that it had taken shounen romance stories a decade to catch up with shoujo ones (in this case my little monster, Nana was ahead of its time).

Seinen/Josei feels more realistic compared to shounen/shoujo. The target audience has more lived experiences.

No.

  1. There are no handsome men like that in reality outside of the entertainment industry (because looks = money there, right?).
  2. Couples usually break up (just google it – in most countries the percentage is fairly high; in 2023 in Japan, I think, it was around 36-38% – that's the divorce rate, not to mention how many couples break up without getting married)
  3. I highly doubt there are any simpleton girls like those in Shojo in reality.
  4. The seducement tactics used would get you behind bars instead of getting doki-dokis out of your love interest.
  5. Royal family members aren't usually hot. It's like a cult possessed with the idea of having a pure bloodline, so there's inevitably incest, which... Well, incest is family business – I don't care, but there's gonna be problems with your genetics, resulting in some underdevelopments in your organism.

So, no, it's still 98% fiction.

In some ways yes, a lot of them do tend to attempt to be a bit more grounded in their approach compared to shonen stuff where character personality traits are hyper-exaggerated. I mean traits WILL still be exaggerated but they feel more similar to like dramas in how they do it compared to the more cartoony/comic book style of exaggeration shonen series tend to go for

In general, I find shoujo/josei to be more relatable than shounen/seinen.

The top shounen/seinen have supernatural or fantasy tags, which I personally don't find realistic, because the setting and elements aren't realistic. The shoujo/josei that I've seen tend to be set in realistic worlds, and I am able to relate to the characters more. That's just my personal preference. Also, there are more shounen/seinen anime being created, and that causes more generalizations to be made about what types of shows appeal to specific demographics. Everyone is different and each show is going to relate to different people.

I have noticed a recent ..fixation? on Josei, seinen, shojo, shounen these demographic categories

I feel like maybe a better way would be to just watch what you like and if you enjoyed it you did, and if not then not, and it doesn't matter what boxes people put it in
Like why try to paint a broad brush and stereotype all anime in some category (according to just this website)

It all depends on the type of story they are trying to tell, but generally Shoujo tends to be just as unrealistic as Shounen while Josei tends to be just as realistic as Seinen. By comparing Josei/Shoujo to Seinen/Shounen it kind of comes out as a wash to where neither grouping is more realistic than the other.

Sometimes they're too realistic for their own good. Most of the times I want my 2D waifus as different as possible from their 3D counterparts.

They can all be idealized or realistic. I'd say Josei and Seinen are more gritty in their realism overall, with Josei being the most grounded from what I see. Though Shoujo can also get gritty and realistic as well. Shounen is the most fantastical, where even their slice of life series are idealizations.
