Production company Shochiku announced an anime movie adaptation of Lewis Carroll's 1865 children's novel Alice in Wonderland on Friday, revealing the main staff, cast, a teaser visual (pictured), and teaser trailer. The movie, titled Fushigi no Kuni de Alice to: Dive in Wonderland, will debut in theaters across Japan on August 29.

The story introduces Rise, a modern-day girl who unexpectedly finds herself in Wonderland. Her chance encounter with Alice sets off an enchanting adventure filled with mystery and wonder.

Nanoka Hara is starring as Rise, following her breakout performance as the lead in Makoto Shinkai's Suzume no Tojimari (Suzume) and her portrayal of Kana Arima in the Oshi no Ko live-action movie. Maika Pugh, known for her role as Platelet in the Hataraku Saibou (Cells at Work!) live-action movie, is voicing Alice.

Toshiya Shinohara (Kuroshitsuji, Nagi no Asu kara) is directing the movie at P.A. Works. Yuuko Kakihara (Tsuki ga Kirei, Shiroi Suna no Aquatope) is penning the script. Shochiku and television station TBS are credited for production.

@BrainpanSonata Jokes aside, but one of the first serious yuri anime and a rare non-MALE gay work by CLAMP was precisely a free adaptation of Alice. Anyway, given their current works, I think it will be more or less female-oriented.

This is a breath of fresh air. But -- This sort of source material can be result in some of the worst train wrecks as well as the best masterpieces in anime, retrospectively.

I'm so hyped for this isekai, I love the light novel for it!

Surprised this hasn't happened sooner, Japan loves that book.

@Swagernator If I had a dollar for every manga or anime based on this story... the only question is are the animals going to be actual animals this time or just more bishounen.

@EcchiGodMamster
Narnia may be more difficult as it is still under copyright. I'm hoping we get Lovecraft anime.

@TheFlyingOrange
Oz already has both a movie and series.

Lol, this is out of nowhere. They'd definitely add some original stuff, but yeah, I want to see how it'll look like.

Sounds like THE setting for an anime to be honest.

I'm interested to see what the Mad Hatter will look like.

@TheFlyingOrange It will be funny if anime ends up handling this much better than Hollywood.

@EcchiGodMamster That one too. It's a shame that the World Masterpiece Theater ended, but it's nice to see some classic literature adaptations like this and the new Anne of the Green Gables anime getting announced.

I'm actually interested

@TheFlyingOrange

what about Narnia lol?

Finally, after years of isekai light novel adaptations, we're going back to the roots. Now we just need Dante's Inferno and Wizard of Oz anime to complete the classic lit isekai trilogy.

I've been obsessed with Alice and all her adaptations for YEARS. There are a lot of good and a lot of bad ones, but everyone puts their own spin on the story and its iconography in some way.

It's been awhile since I've loved a P.A. production, but they do have a consistent level of quality that leaves me very excited for however they decide to tell Alice's story.

I was never into Alice, but this doesn't seem to be a perfect one-to-one adaptation of Lewis' original works (like who's Rise?), and most importantly it was done by PA.... So, yeah, omoshiroi I guess....
