This is the first anime I ever watched IFAIK way back in 2015 when you could watch anime in it's entirety on Youtube. Since watching it I have evolved out of liking "cute girls doing cute things" and "slice of life" anime so I thought it would interesting to give it a rewatch.
I did not like it. I can see how my younger self liked it however. This is the kind of anime where you don't really have to worry about plot or character progression or anything like that. You just relax and watch what happens. For one, that kind of storytelling doesn't interest me
...
anymore. I could barely make it through half of this because nothing was happening. Secondly, the characters are annoying as hell. Especially the two mains. There's no English dub so you have to listen to two full grown Japanese women put on their best middle school girl voices and it's like a cheese grater on my ears.
The animation is actually pretty good. It holds up surprisingly well. I wouldn't call it top of the line or anything, but it definitely could pass for something that came out in 2018-19 and not 2014.
Calling this show a romance isn't really accurate either as they never actually end up together. They just realize that they love each other as friends and were confusing it with romantic love. It was really frustrating the first time I watched it, and it's less so now (I watch Inuyasha, I'm used to this.) but it still feels kinda cheap.
I enjoyed it when I first watched it, but that was because it was my first anime ever and I had no standards for what I enjoy or what the medium was capable of. Would I recommend it as someone's first anime? No. Watch Death Note, or Inuyasha or something like that.
Would I recommend this period? Yeah, it's alright, even if I don't like it anymore, my 14 year old self did so there's definitely something worth watching.

Time for a rant.
This show THINKS it's mature. It WANTS to be mature. But in reality it's no different than the edgy fanfiction we all wrote when we were 14 where everyone dies because EDGE. This show follows a trend I've seen in a lot of Shonen, dumping a character's entire backstory on the audience right before they died. It's the single worst way to do character development because there IS no development. We don't know anything about the character prior to their death, and then they expect an info dump to make us care. It got to the point where I could tell
...
who would die just by who was featured at the beginning of an episode. This is one of the worst shows I've ever seen. I would rather watch Future Diary than this, at least FD has SOME memorable moments. I literally can only recall like 4 scenes from this entire show, it just blends together into a giant blob in my head.
Also the worldbuilding. THE WORLDBUIDLING! You know what the capital of the entire country is called? It's called THE CAPITAL! There are no named places in this story. "The Empire," "My village," "The continent." Even Hunger Games at least had a name for the country the story takes place in. The world design doesn't stand out either. It's generic. You could literally take the designs of the cities and landscapes and put them into any other slightly medieval inspired anime and it would fit perfectly.
It's a shame because it started strong, the first ep was promising but holy shit it nose dives! It doesn't even wait until the first episode is over before it nose dives by the way. They try to be dark and mature by showing the MC's friends are dead and were tortured and blah blah blah pointless edge. But immediately after, there's a forced joke by the WORST character in the entire anime and it completely ruins the mood.
And don't get me started on the characters. The characters aren't just poorly written, they're barely characters at all. Every character has one personality trait and that's the entire character. Even freaking POKEMON has more 3 dimensional characters than this. Akame is the sad loner girl with the tragic backstory, Leone is the tough big sister. These sound like interesting starting points for characters until you realize a 3 word summary is their ENTIRE personality. They have ZERO development. Who they are in the first ep is who they are in the last ep. (If they even make it to the last ep that is)
Also, Esdeath is one of the worst characters in anime history. She's like late twenties to early thirties at the LEAST and then she falls in love with the MC who is like 15-16. She is a ruthless psychopath with zero redeeming qualities and the show tries to redeem her because she falls in love with a teenager... How does this show have fans? Oh, I know why! Because shonuen fans have no taste and will gobble up any slop that is put in front of them. Just look to the isekei of the month for proof of that. All it takes is to have a set of boobs and all past sins are forgiven.

The game's story is better but it's pretty good. I kind of lost interest in it about half way through and just soldiered through the rest of it. None of the characters stood out to me like the ones from the game did. No one in this entire anime was as good of character as Judy, or Panam or even Johnny. David was your typical shonuen one note protagonist and Lucy was your typical Zero Two bad girl type of character to play off of the wimpy protagonist. How ironic that this studio also made Darling in the Franxx. (One of my most hated anime
...
ever)
Animation was very good, seeing as its Triggers specialty. However, they continue to lack in the character department. David and Lucy are the only characters that stood out to me, everyone else kind of bled into the background. Yes, even Rebecca. And, if it wasn't for this taking place in a preexisting world, I imagine they'd continue to lack in the worldbuilding department. (Again, see Darling in the Franxx) If this didn't take place in the Cyberpunk universe I would've past it by. But it's pretty alright.

Actually not really a fan of this adaption. The animation is really slow and stiff. The voice acting is kinda bad. It sounds like they're just reading off of a script in front of them. Griffith is the only one who sounds like he's actually acting. It cuts out some of Guts' backstory also. Along with some other stuff. I understand why as it aired on TV but it is important to the story. OST is god tier though.
All in all, it's the best adaption of Berserk we have. But it does leave a lot to be desired. I really hope at some point
...
a capable studio fully adapts the entire story. It could rival the likes of Game of Thrones and The Witcher.

It's alright, but I think this show was pointless. The story works better as a game. The story hinges on the fact that YOU are the one playing it. When you're just a neutral observer it doesn't hit as hard. It'd be like if they made a movie adaptation of Spec Ops: The Line.
The animation and voice acting both in the dub and sub are very good however. Also the soundtrack is straight from the game, which I see as a good thing seeing as imo it's one of the best soundtracks in gaming and now anime.
All in all this isn't for everyone. Some
...
people would describe this as "pretentious" and I can see why, even if I don't believe it is. I wouldn't recommend the anime being your first introduction to Nier, definitely play the game first.

Deviates too far from the manga and suffers because of it. They literally made up an ending exclusive to the anime. There are so many plot points left unresolved and then it just ends. It'd be like if in Lord of the Rings the entire thing ended after the battle of Helm's Deep. It's jarring and makes no sense.
Also characters stand around talking too much. Writers never heard of show don't tell. I know that's a problem in shounen as a whole, but it's REALLY bad here. The yoma will literally just describe what Clare is doing TO HER. "Ah, you're trying to hinder my
...
movement by going for my legs" etc. Like what? Who talks like that? You're supposed to try to kill her, not lecture her.

Berserk is, in my opinion, the greatest story ever told in all of fiction. Better than Lord of the Rings, better than A Song of Ice and Fire along with anything else you could think of. Berserk isn't just a manga, it's something that spoke to me on a personal level. The character of Guts is one that should be studied for years to come. He's depth rivals that of characters like Geralt. He goes through so much, he literally goes to hell, and yet he keeps on going. Because he has hope that tomorrow will be brighter.
I'll just be lost in the sea
...
of people praising this story, so I'll just say thank you Mira. Thank you for writing this masterpiece.

Bloom Into You is one of the rare cases that I love a manga from a genre that I largely hate (slice of life romance). It has some of the most well written and believable characters I've seen in a story.
Yuu is a girl who thinks she is incapable of falling in love. She believes that love just wasn't meant for her and she's much happier watching others fall in love. What Yuu doesn't realize is that the reason she doesn't feel love is because she doesn't UNDERSTAND love. She's read so many romance mangas that she has this unrealistic and cartoonish expectation of what
...
it should feel like to fall in love. And then she met Touko, and had to rethink everything about herself.
Touko, on the other hand, is a girl who has heaps of expectations placed upon her. She's expected to live up to her late sister's greatness and become even better than she was. Her parents are the stereotypical "why you not doctor yet?" kind of people. She doesn't believe she has time for love or even friends. That is, until she meets Yuu.
Together, they learn from each other and form a bond that honestly is one of the strongest I've ever seen.
Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed reading through this. More slice of life should be like this.

The only complaint I have is that the anime is not the whole story. It ends early and you have to read the manga to get the rest of the story. A really dumb thing to do, but it didn't detract from the experience for me.

This anime has nothing to say. It has no point in existing other than being a power fantasy. It has no themes, no worldbuilding, the bare minimum of character development. All around just a waste of time. It only exists for lonely teenagers to self insert themselves into role of the MC and imagine they're the ones doing all the uber powerful stuff and getting a harem of girls that worship their every move. You will not gain anything from watching this. No greater understanding of life and purpose like you would from Berserk, nor the ability to accept yourself for who you are, faults
...
and all like you would with Inuyasha.
It fails as a fantasy show, it fails as an action show, it fails as a romance, it fails at EVERYTHING it tries to do, yet there are people in this world on the same internet as you and I who would say this was one of the best anime of 2023. Absolutely mental. You know I learned a few weeks ago that all of these types of shows are adapted from a Japanese website that is basically a merge between Webtoon and AO3. That makes sooo much more sense.
