Althought the themes of the shows are different, I find that they both have that same style of suspense that makes you want to watch episode after episode as fast as you possibly can. The mysteries of what happened to Ushio in Summertime Rendering and Akira's past in Higashi no Eden grab you and don't let go.
Also, lots of gratuitous nudity and a smart (even though Akira doesn't look it) guy with long-ish black hair as main character.
