Himeko's "Random Underrated Anime I Like" Twitter Post Archive
AnimeUnlisted
Occasionally I'll post on Twitter a selection of four different random underrated anime that I like. This interest stack is to serve as an archive of those posts, as well as place to easily browse a varied assortment of underrated anime that I recommend checking out. The items in this list will be in the same order as the posts, and has no meaning. Unlike those Twitter posts, I will add a bit of commentary here.
"Underrated" is a subjective concept, so here are my qualifications for if an anime is underrated or not:
1. A small amount of MAL users have seen it.
2. I feel that the average rating/common consensus is less than what the anime actually deserves.
3. I don't see other otaku that I know personally talk about it often.

I've always loved the "sleaze humor" of older anime, and this show takes the cake for one of the sleaziest comedies ever made. Hilarious show with wild plot-lines, and also extremely 80s. If you like "offensive" anime, or other absurd ecchi comedies like Ishuzoku Reviewers, then you'll like this.

This show is amazing, and it pains me how underrated it is. A short paranormal detective ghost hunting anime, but with the protagonist being a dominatrix who can see ghosts. That idea alone is amazing, and they do a great job with it. I love these sorts of campy shows, and this show is incredible. I also think its cool that the story follows a sex worker, as you don't always get to see that in anime.

Another fun ecchi OVA, is about girls who are computers but predates Chobits. Unlike Chobits though, this is an ecchi action show, and the ecchi content is far more extreme (with the main girl being charged with semen). As you can tell already with this list, I like Japanese erotica a lot.

Another painfully underrated anime, also the first non-lewd one in the list. This show falls under what I like to call "artistic SOLs", shows that take the concepts of SOL anime, but with deeper story-lines, unique settings, and showing harder parts of life (other examples being Aria and Haibane Renmei). The show follows the shinigami girl Momo, and the stories of those she meets in their final moments.

Anime girls are cool, 80s OVAs are cool, dragons are cool, 80s OVAs about anime girls with dragons are ultra cool. An incredibly 80s OVA that's one of my favorites, follows a dragon's life with a story in two parts, with each episode being its own contained storyline. Is just really well done and I love the story, setting, and action in it; some nice old-school violence too.

One shot OVA that slaps, and is also extremely 80s. Not everyone knows this about me, but I love sci-fi stuff, and this anime is awesome. A short and zany space adventure with three girls who all look like they were done by different animators.

lol the rating of this show on MAL is sub-4, incredible. I mostly watch more action/dark/crazy/sci-fi/fantasy OVAs, but I like the comedy ones as well. Another one shot OVA about a dog and his owner, lots of dumb dated humor and ecchi, but I love this kind of stuff. This is unironically a good show if you like dated gag anime.

I've been watching anime for a VERY long time, and this is one of those shows that I've just never seen anyone mention nor have any idea on wtf I'm talking about when I bring it up. Obviously, that applies to a lot of the shows here, hence them being underrated, but this is a whole TV series forgotten in the annals (anals) of history. Basically its people fighting with giant bugs, which sounds like some kodomo anime theme, but its seinen and has cute girls.

Thus is one of the first anime that I ever watched, and I feel this show is what truly got me into anime. I had seen some stuff prior to this, but this shows is what really opened my eyes up to how creative, immersive, and beautiful, anime can be. Its a heavily shinto-based anime, with the main girl becoming a god and her experiences dealing with that and interacting with other gods. Its an incredible SOL, and I'll always be baffled as to how its not a classic.

One of my favorite story-based hentai OVAs. A one shot OVA about a spaceship that gets invaded with a tentacle rape alien. I absolutely love Japanese ero-horror, and this OVA absolutely nails it with an awesome atmosphere, story, violence, and so on. The sci-fi theme is a huge plus too, one of my favorite anime.

Another old one shot story-based sci-fi hentai OVA. An awesome short show with an unexpected amount of extreme violence, great for those who like old violent OVAs.

Season-length OVA series that's full of drama and romcom content. Follows a dude who's struggling to get started in life, then ends up in a messy love triangle. If you like romantic drama stuff, romcoms, and/or those types of anime that feel like its a shoujo anime yet isn't, this is a good lesser-known one to peep.

An awesome OVA series, has a good sequel too. Absolute amazing show, full of demons, action, and awesome story, and a cute girl who woke her third eye. The show is extremely early 90s, and with 90s being one of my favorite anime eras, I absolutely loved it. Super cool show with a lot of strengths that make it stand out.

An amazing mid-80s one shot erohorror pseudo-hentai pinku OVA (say that three times fast) about a dude who becomes a monster when he becomes aroused. It sounds dumb, but its actually a very entertaining campy 80s OVA. Also the call girl dynamic really makes it stand out, as with the second show on this list, as its not common for anime to follow the stories of sex workers.

A really incredible underrated CGDCT SOL about girls who ride bicycles. Its hard to truly describe how much I liked this show, but its just so well done. It has such an adventurous and heartfelt energy to it, with an amazing atmosphere and artwork, and nice characters as well (especially Hinako Saijou). Its very similar to the much more popular Bakuon!!, and the not so popular, Minami Kamakura Koukou Joshi Jitensha-bu, but is better than both imo.

I feel that these old historical anime/old-school shoujos are insanely underrated in general; I hardly ever see anyone talk about these shows, but I love this vein of anime. A romantic drama that takes place in Europe during WWII, with the characters trying to escape the nazis, whilst defeating a few on the way.

Painfully underrated 00s anime that largely gets overshadowed by the much more prominent Hidamari Sketch. If you enjoyed Hidamari Sketch, you'll also enjoy this, as they're both incredibly similar. I often don't care for super shy protagonists, but this show did it really well.

Another old 4 episode paranormal ghost hunting anime. This anime bleeds 90s, and has a lot of cool stuff in it, also ghosts are cool.

This was actually one of the first, if not the first, OVA anime that I watched. I love moe-military stuff, and this is a very underrated show in that realm. An early 90s idol anime, but the idols are also active military personnel who fight with fighter planes. Its just awesome, and tons of killer old anison too~!

This is one of those "we have to make this club or do this thing but assholes wont let us but with friendship and hardwork we can do it!" anime, similar to stuff like Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight!, but much better. I feel this is one of the strongest anime in that sub-genre, is genuinely incredibly entertaining throughout. Very 00s, very good.

Fuck yes, one of my absolute favorite anime ever made, and a monument of Japanese erotica~! Part-hentai, part crazy action OVA, this anime as it all. It also heavily mixes paranormal, sci-fi, fantasy, and modernity, into one amazing clusterfuck. I absolutely love this anime, its one of the best anime ever made, EVER. I seriously love this show, its perfection. Also it has both capes AND bikini armor, LETS GOOOOO

Very cool steampunk-ish anime from the early 00s. I love that period of the 00s where there were still some studios pushing out the creativity of the 90s, but in a more modernized manner. I feel its a very interesting era that isn't discussed enough. This anime has a lot of planes, airships, dogfights, and military stuff, plus the cute loli Alvis.

Fun and zany old comedy anime with short episodes full of even shorter sketches. This is one of those random chaos comedies, but a 90s edition (so a lot of old gag humor, which I love). Super funny and fast-paced show with a lot of absurd and edgy jokes.

Insanely underrated, should be considered a classic. An awesome sci-fi late 90s anime about a guy who used to be a rockstar but is now just an old boomer salaryman in a failing marriage. The show's deeper plot is really absurd, but it handles it in a more mature manner, and with all of the 1990s artistry that one would expect. This show actually reminded me a lot of NHK, with its dysfunctional protagonist in bizarre situations.

One of my all-time favorite anime and a certified hood classic. I feel that 70s anime in general are hugely underrated in this day and age, and this is one of the best. Old school drama/old school shoujo historical anime that takes place in early 1900s America. It follows Candy's life and her trials and tribulations in an amazing story that's addicting from episode one. This is a must watch imo.

Really awesome and underrated slice of life about a Japanese girl living in 19th century Paris. This is really similar to shows like Aria where it's a really strong SOL, showing the ups and downs of life and not so much a focus on comedy. This anime is amazing, and if you like serious SOL shows, I highly recommend it.

Really artistic sci-fi adventure anime with an extremely distinct art-style. Despite this show literally being award-winning I never hear anyone talk about it outside of appearing on an Onichomp album cover. If you like experimental anime, then this is a good watch.

Pretty awesome 80s OVA of a badass girl fighting stuff. Is very similar to stuff like Dream Hunter Rem, just without the hentai. Really fun watch, especially if you like old OVA anime.
